Owens,a jazz trumpeter,composer, arranger, lecturer, and music educationconsultant, has over 35 yearsof experienceand covesa wide rangeof internationalmusical achievement that includesextensive work as a stuido musician,soloist, bandleader, and composerof orchestracompositions, film scores,and ballets.By the age of 25, Jimmy had beena sidemanwith Lionel Jimmy Heath,saxophonist, composer, and educator,has performedwith nearlyall the jazz greatsof the last 50 years,from Hampton,, , , and DukeEllington. The RooseveltUniversity Jazz Ensemble, directedby RobParton, is madeup of pri­ marily jazz studiesmajors. The collegeof performingarts at Rooseveltconsists of approximately500 students,58 of which are jazz studiesmajors. The goal of the Rooseveltjazz studiesprogram is to devel­ op musiciansof very high quality so that they may enter the "world of jazz" and commercialmusic with the ability and tools neededto makea living doing what they love.

The RooseveltUniversity Jazz Ensemble is honoredto be new to this year's CollegiateJazz Festivallineup. Recently the band recordedits first CDentitled Bird's Eyeview and looksforward to recordingits secondCD later this semester.Rob Parton is chair and director of jazz studiesand large ensemblesas well as an active studio musicianand band leaderin the Chicago area. Underthe direction of KevinBales, Jazz ComboI was namedwinner of the 1998 Downbeatstudent music award for Best Jazz Group.In additionto rehearsingtwice a week, the group is busy performingconcerts at the Universityof North Floridaand in local venues,as well as conductingclinics for high school music programs.

Individually,each of the membersare active performers.Trumpeter Randall Haywood has performedand recordedwith Wynton Marsalisand the Lincoln CenterJazz Orchestra,and with pianist MarcusRoberts. Vibraphonist Christian Tamburr, tours nationally with the swing band SwingerHead.The comboalso includesDaniel Silva on alto saxophone,William Thorntonon bass,and Ian Goodmanon drums.
