This area is situated in the north western Romania, comprising 86 administrative territories from Cluj County. The authors present a brief description of pedologyc-climatic conditions with reference to the relief, geology, climate, hydrological description, factors which lead to the formation of the soil blanket. In its activity, Soil and Agrochemical Studies Ofice Cluj has conducted numerous pedologycal and agrochemical studies, including soil analysis. These studies have highlighted among other, the agrochemical parameters of soils in the mentioned area. Soil reaction: moderately to strong acidic more than 84,000 ha, 20,000 ha moderately alkaline and strongly alkaline over 500 ha, reserve of humus (0-50 cm) very small and small 147,000 ha, 118 ha moderate, high and very high 160,000 ha, low and very low in nitrogen content 319,000 ha, 54,000 ha medium, large and very large 52,000 ha, low and very low content of phosphorus over 323,000 ha, 82,000 ha medium, high and very high over 20,000 ha, low and very low content of potassium 18,000 ha, 134,000 ha medium, high and very high over 270,000 ha. Summarizing the above, we conclude that prevention of soil degradation from an agrochemical point of view, as well as improvement of fertility can be done only through profound knowledge and inventory of agrochemical characteristics of the soils. The Cluj Metropolitan Area is located in Cluj County, the north-western development region of Romania. The strategic option of polycentric territorial development was adopted on the basis of the principles outlined in the NDP (National Development Plan)- on spatial development at regional level. This involves supporting development processes within urban growth pole. The associative structure at the Cluj Metropolitan Area (CMA) was formed at the end of 2008, continuing the efforts to establish a metropolitan area with economic specificity, initiated by Cluj County Council in 2006. Communes included in Cluj Metropolitan Area are also part of different micro-regional associations with relatively homogeneous characteristics. These associations were formed at the initiative of city halls and they have legal personality. Key words: Cluj Metropolitan Area, peri-urban refuge, urban space, rural space, development strategy. INTRODUCTION The city of the future must be an intelligent one, mostly named smart city, whose development is based on the exploitation of intellectual capital towards education/self-education, innovation and economic development among environment-friendly sectors of activity. Nicolae BACIU, Gheorghe ROŞIAN, Octavian-Liviu MUNTEAN, Vlad MĂCICĂŞAN, Viorel ARGHIUŞ, Radu MIHĂIESCU More specifically, municipal development should be based on high quality drinking water resources, appropriate waste management, improved air quality and appropriate hazard and risk management in order to maintain a clean and safe living environment.

  • Salt and the Development of Human Settlements with Balnear and Climateric Potential Within the Romanian Intra- Carpathian Space
DOI: 10.2478/pesd-2019-0011 PESD, VOL. 13, no. 1, 2019 SALT AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF HUMAN SETTLEMENTS WITH BALNEAR AND CLIMATERIC POTENTIAL WITHIN THE ROMANIAN INTRA- CARPATHIAN SPACE Gheorghe Romanescu1 Keywords: mine; diapir fold; rock salt; balneal and climacteric resort; intra- Carpathian space Abstract. Deposit salt in Romania has extremely important reserves, considered even inexhaustible at the current exploitation level. The biggest salt resources are found in the intra-Carpathian arch, represented by Transylvania and Maramures. Most sources of salt outcrops are disseminated on the edge of the Transylvania Depression, in the diapir folds formed following salt migration. The salt mines – Turda, Praid, Ocna Mures, Ocna Dej, Ocna Sibiu, Cojocna, Ocna Sugatag – represented an important source of incomes, reason for which important human settlements formed around them. All these localities have turned nowadays into balneal and climacteric resorts that fully use the beneficial effect of the atmosphere within galleries (Praid, Turda). The most important incomes from tourism are represented by the galleries of the mines of Turda (one of the 10 wonders of the modern world) and Praid. The balneal and climacteric resorts also developed around the salt lakes installed in the areas of collapsed mines: Sovata, Ocna Sibiu, Ocna Dej, Cojocna. The most well known human settlements and the most important balneal and climacteric resorts, implicitly, are disseminated on the external branch of the Transylvania Depression (Sovata, Praid, Ocna Mures, Baile Figa, Cojocna thermae, Ocna Dej, Ocna Sibiu) and of the Maramures Depression (Ocna Sugata, Costiui, Vad). The oldest mining exploitation is situated at Figa (county of Bistrita-Nasaud) was founded around the year AD 3000.

  • Scientific Report PNII-3-0546 EN
Scientific report on the implementation of the project entitled "Diversity of archaea inhabiting saline lakes from Transylvanian Basin (Central Romania)" Project code PN-II-PCE-2011-3-0546, Contract No. 186/2011, during October – December 2011 Introduction Transylvanian Basin is an important geographical area acommodating numerous saline pools and lakes formed on salt deposits of marine origin dating from Miocene (13.8 Ma, de Leeuw et al., 2011). Substantial accumulation of salt in the Transylvanian Basin are found in Ocna Dej, Turda, Ocna Mures Ocna Sibiu, Jabenita, Sovata. Transylvanian Basin salt lakes were formed either naturally (e.g. Bear Lake, Alunis Lake, Green Lake, Red Lake) or anthropogenic. The anthropogenic salt lakes appeared at the place of the old salt exploitations during Daco-Roman period (e.g. Ocna Dej, Turda, Cojocna). Most of the Transylvanian Basin salt lakes are stratified (meromictic) lakes presenting heliothermy phenomenon. Variation in the physico-chemcal properties of saline and hypersaline environments properties (mono- and divalent cations and anions, dissolved mineral content, pH) is reflected in the diversity of the communities of microorganisms that live in those conditions. Halophilic and extremely halophilic microorganisms are found in all three domains of life (Archaea, Bacteria and Eukarya) given the high degree of diversity of physiological, biochemical, and genetic capabilities (Oren, 1999). Halophilic archaea are common within Halobacteriaceae, Methanospirillaceae, Methanosarcinaceae famillies; within

  • Patterns of Relationships Between Nematode Communities and Vegetation from Some Salt-Affected Areas in Transylvania (Romania)
Nematol. medit. (2004),32: 137-146 137 PATTERNS OF RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN NEMATODE COMMUNITIES AND VEGETATION FROM SOME SALT-AFFECTED AREAS IN TRANSYLVANIA (ROMANIA) M. Ciobanu!", H.E van Dobben2 and I. PopovicF 1Institute 0/ Biological Research, Department o/Taxonomy and Ecology, 48 Republicii Street, 3400 Cluj-Napoca, Romania 2 ALTERRA, Postbus 47, 6700 AA Wageningen, the Netherlands Summary. Plant and nematode communities from two inland salt-affected habitats located in the Transylvania province (Roma nia) were analyzed by detrended correspondence analysis (DCA). Vegetation samples were clearly separated into three clusters, each cluster including one distinct plant association, while nematode communities were less distinctly separated into groups. Dif ferences in halotolerance were noted for both plant and nematode species. Extreme salt-affected habitats characterized by oblig ate halophilic phytocoenoses were dominated by opportunistic nematodes and were differentiated from other habitats by the low est MI values. The most halotolerant species, Laimydorus parabastianz; could be used as key bioindicator for salt-affected areas. A characterization of plant and nematode communities is provided. Soil nematodes possess several attributes that make' 1968).
