Shapiro History MA, 2011 Prof. Dr. İ. Metin Kunt Keywords: Ottoman History Much research has been done on ways that the Ottoman sultanate sought to boost its legitimacy among its subjects. The degree to which non-Muslims considered the sultanate to be legitimate, however, has not been thoroughly investigated. Rather it has been assumed in literature on the topic that non-Muslims could not fully endorse the legitimacy of the Ottoman sultanate because of religious antagonism. This thesis addresses this question in depth by assessing the views of nine Early Modern Greek chronicle writers regarding the legitimacy of the Ottoman sultanate. The introduction of this thesis provides intellectual contextualization through brief discussions of Byzantine and Ottoman political theory. It is followed by a second chapter that describes the views of Greek chroniclers who did not consider the Ottoman sultanate to be legitimate. The third chapter analyzes the views of one chronicler who accepted the legitimacy of the Ottoman sultanate without justifying his views. Finally, the fourth chapter analyses two groups of chroniclers who crafted legitimizing discourses in support of the Ottoman sultanate. The thesis ends with consideration of the nine chronicles audiences and with questions about the degree to which intellectuals influenced each other across linguistic and religious borders in the Eastern Mediterranean of the Early Modern Period. In sum, this thesis shows that Early Modern Greek chronicle writers had diverse views on the legitimacy of the Ottoman sultanate and that some of them crafted legitimizing discourses in support of their Muslim rulers. Watts ([email protected]) Office: Humanities and Social Sciences 4005 Office Hours: Tuesday 9-11 Office Phone: 534-2733 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course examines the history of the Byzantine Empire from the early fifth until the mid-fifteenth century. Discussions will center on Byzantium, but it does so in a way that acknowledges both Byzantium’s political frontiers and its much broader cultural and religious influence. Although the Byzantine Empire’s territory contracts dramatically across its 1000-year history, its influence in other ways becomes ever greater. The course then balances the political narrative of the empire with a broader discussion of Byzantium’s legacy as a world civilization. EXPECTATIONS: Students will be expected to attend each class and complete readings in both ancient and modern historical sources. Larger assignments for the class include one short paper (~5 pages), a midterm exam, and a final paper of 8 pages. There will be no final examination. Evaluation will be based upon attendance and class participation (10%), the short paper (20%), the midterm exam (30%), and the final paper (40%). These percentages are not hard and fast, however. Demonstrable improvement throughout the semester will be rewarded. Class disruptions, such as audible talking or cellphones ringing, will lead to deductions from the participation grade.     Ioannis S. Chalkos The 1912 Ottoman elections and the Greeks in the Vilayet of Adrianople: A view from the Greek Archives. The Young Turk governments of the Ottoman Empire (1908-18) are widely considered as a part of the latter’s modernization process.1 The reforms, which had been initiated in the midst of the 19th century, were aiming at the homogenization of the society under the principle of Ottomanism. This was an effort of the Otto- man administrations to attract the loyalty of all their subjects to a new “Ottoman Nation” so as to block the centrifugal tendencies threatening the very existence of the empire.2 However, there was an inherent dualism in this concept of egalitarian- ism promoted through the reforms: the millet system, the old classification of the Ottoman subjects in semi-autonomous religious communities governed by their own law, was preserved and gradually secularized resulting in the stimulation of the separatist nationalist movements.3 Regarding the Greek-Orthodox communi- ties, the Bulgarian ecclesiastical schism of 1870 and the resulting Greco-Bulgarian dispute over Macedonia had strengthened the Greek character of the millet (Rum millet) while the Greek Kingdom was gaining increasing control over its in- stitutions.4 Still the road to an open rift between the Greeks and their Ottoman context was a long one. Developments were shaped and evolved in a changing social and polit- ical landscape which was dominated by continuity rather than specific turning points. The examination of the 1912 Ottoman elections presents an excellent op- portunity for the exploration of this landscape.

Even though the Albanian community has more than twenty years of presence in the country, its stories, often invested with otherness, remain hidden in the Greek ‘mono-cultural’ landscape. In opposition to these stigmatising discourses, my study draws on movements democratising the past and calling for engagements from below by endorsing the socially constructed nature of identity and the denationalisation of memory. A nine-month fieldwork with five Albanian families took place in their domestic and neighbourhood settings in the areas of Athens and Piraeus. Based on critical ethnography, data collection was derived from participant observation, conversational interviews and participatory techniques. From an individual and family group point of view the notion of habitus led to diverse conceptions of ethnic identity, taking transnational dimensions in families’ literal and metaphorical back- and-forth movements between Greece and Albania.

While recent scholarship has infinitely en- hanced our knowledge of the world in which Panaretos lived, it has been approx- imately seventy years since a scholar dedicated a historiographical study to the text. This study examines the world that Panaretos wanted posterity to see, ex- amining how his post as imperial secretary and his use of sources shaped his representation of reality, whether that reality was Trebizond’s experience of for- eigners, the reign of Alexios III, or a narrative that showed the superiority of Tre- bizond on the international stage. Finally by scrutinizing Panaretos in this way, this paper also illuminates how modern historians of Trebizond have been led astray by the chronicler, unaware of Panaretos selected material for inclusion for the narratives of his chronicle. ANTONOPOULOS THE FLOW OF INFORMATION IN MEDIEVAL HISTORIOGRAPHY1 If I were to ask a postgraduate researcher, collect all the information explicitly stated to have been personally witnessed by the author through such phrases as «I saw», «I heard», «I witnessed» etc. then I gather that he or she, would hardly be able to compile a single volume of it, having been requested to read through the whole of Byzantine historical literature. He would then be prompted to follow the same pattern of work by searching through the whole of medieval Latin, or western historiography. If he/she were able to read through it. I am sure that we would be faced with several volumes of data which are supposed to convey personal accounts. Apart from the very fact that western literature taken as a whole, could amount to ten times as much as Byzantine, there are a few other factors which will be analyzed in the course of this lecture. It is however, important to stress that these are related to forms of writing, time, social attitudes, educational standards, and the author’s knowledge of the world. Until around the year A.D. 1.000, Byzantine historical literature is divided into two main branches, professional history and chronography. These branches could well be said to be respectively complementing the two main pillars of the Byzantine state, the Roman heritage of its political existence, and the Christian perspective of the world. The first thing we should bear in mind when we come to examine the work of professional historians, is that this work has not been casually composed, just for the sake of writing a history.

    Christian Allies of the Ottoman Empire by Emrah Safa Gürkan The relationship between the Ottomans and the Christians did not evolve around continuous hostility and conflict, as is generally assumed. The Ottomans employed Christians extensively, used Western know-how and technology, and en- couraged European merchants to trade in the Levant. On the state level, too, what dictated international diplomacy was not the religious factors, but rather rational strategies that were the results of carefully calculated priorities, for in- stance, several alliances between the Ottomans and the Christian states. Notes Citation Introduction Cooperation between the Ottomans and various Christian groups and individuals started as early as the beginning of the 14th century, when the Ottoman state itself emerged. The Ottomans, although a Muslim polity, did not hesitate to cooperate with Christians for practical reasons. Nevertheless, the misreading of the Ghaza (Holy War) literature1 and the consequent romanticization of the Ottomans' struggle in carrying the banner of Islam conceal the true nature of rela- tions between Muslims and Christians. Rather than an inevitable conflict, what prevailed was cooperation in which cul- tural, ethnic, and religious boundaries seemed to disappear. Firstly, Christian allies of the Ot- tomans were individuals; the Ottomans employed a number of Christians in their service, mostly, but not always, after they had converted.

    A. J. P AN AYOTOPO ULOS EARLY RELATIONS BETWEEN THE GREEKS AND THE YOUNG TURKS This paper deals with the relations of the Greeks and the Young Turks before the July revolution in 1908. My intention is to indicate that the Young Turks had undertaken the initiative to contact the Ottoman Greeks and the representatives of the Greek Kingdom and ask their cooperation for the establishment of the constitutional regime; however, the Greeks responded with considerable cautiousness. The Sultan’s men also made an attempt to associate themselves with the Greeks in order to get information about the Young Turks, but the Greeks were equally reserved towards them. There are three points, which I would like to suggest: First, the Young Turks tried to establish relations with the Greeks, second, the Greeks were hesitant to accept the Young Turks’ proposals, and third, the July revolution did not take the Greeks by surprise, which means that they should have adopt­ ed A concrete policy towards the new regime. Most of the information on which this paper is based on is from primary sources, i.e. Greek consular reports kept with the Historical Archive of the Greek Foreign Ministry. The Young Turkish Committees which were active in Paris, had establish­ ed certain relations with the Greeks as early as February 1902, when they held A Congress in the French capital. More than forty delegates arrived in Paris to participate at the Congress1, despite the protests of the Ottoman Ambassador in Paris Munir bey. Prince Sabaheddin, defending the cause of the conference as well as the participants, wrote to the French Foreign Minister Delcassé that those who defied the Sultan’s power and bribes2, would not be frightened by any “procédé d’in­ timidation puérile”3.

    Histos Supplement ( ) – INTRODUCTION MORTAL MISFORTUNES, ΘΕ OΣ ΑΝΑΙΤΙ OΣ, AND ΤΟ ΘΕ IOΝ ΦΘ OΝΕΡΟΝ: THE SOCRATIC SEEDS OF LATER ∗ DEBATE ON HERODOTUS’ THEOLOGY Anthony Ellis Abstract : This introduction offers a brief overview of the Socratic and Platonic background to later perceptions of Herodotus’ views about the nature of god, and specifically the notion that god is phthoneros (‘jealous’, ‘envious’, ‘grudging’). Following this theme through later centuries, it then argues that the writings of Plato subtly influenced the theological discourse of subsequent classical, Hellenistic, and Christian historiography, and coloured reactions to Herodotus at all periods, from the fourth century BC to th-century Byzantium. This diachronic approach reveals a long-standing tension between the presentation of the gods in Herodotean historiography, on the one hand, and Platonic and Christian theology, on the other.
