Mariana Alcoforado (1640-1723) lived in Our Lady of the Conception Convent in Beja. Matisse leads us along the course of the passionate love affair of the nun from Beja, depicting the imaginary portraits of Mariana with delicate and at the same time tormented contours. Original publisher's printed wrappers, chemise and slipcase. From the edition limited to 145 copies, with this one of 95 copies on Vélin d'Arches, signed in ink on justification page. Matisse used his extraordinary ability to master lines pure and essential to realizing the 29 drawings from which the etchings derive. Using the economy of the thin, engraved lines with no shading in order to not overpower the ethereal quality of Mallarme poetry. Patterson, and Pablo Picasso among many others. On view from April 5 to December 1, 2019, the exhibition will highlight the museum’s in-depth collection of tapestries from the mid-20th century, as well as shed light on a unique medium that has been important to many great Modern and contemporary artists. This will be the first time that the museum’s entire tapestries collection will be on view at once. The tapestries will be hung alongside the artists’ work in more familiar media to demonstrate both the stylistic consistency and the unique contributions textile production brought to their oeuvre. The title of the exhibition stems from Le Corbusier’s essay “Tapestries: Nomadic Murals.” Tapestries, a centuries-old tradition, found renewed attention and invention over the last century, in particular by artists from the 20th century who tackled a venerated practice with avant-garde zeal.

    26 September 2008 THE YVES SAINT LAURENT AND PIERRE BERGĒ COLLECTION “Pierre Bergé and I wished for our selection to reflect our favourite pieces and for it to evolve with them, quality being the only criterion to guide us.” Yves Saint Laurent Paris - Christie's is honoured to announce the sale of the Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé Collection, which will take place in Paris on the 23rd, 24th and 25th February 2009 at the Grand Palais, in association with the Pierre Bergé & Associates auctioneers. As in many instances where an artist’s signature style defines a décor, the word “Collection″ is uniquely deserved by that of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé. The works of art found in their respective apartments at the rue de Babylone and the rue Bonaparte, were brought together to become one of the most important collections ever to come onto the art market. A reflection of 50 years of passionate and detailed search for rare and unique pieces, this shared collection is a truly moving exhibition of their shared eye. It is one of the most sumptuous private collections of our time, a French paragon of quality and taste, consisting of masterpieces of Modern Art, Art Deco, European furniture and works of art, antiquities, Old Master and 19th century paintings and drawings. The works, amounting to more than 700 in total, are estimated at between 200 and 300 million Euros. Yves Saint Laurent bequeathed his joint share of the Collection to the Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent Foundation. Pierre Bergé has since decided to put the entire Collection up for sale and to create a new foundation dedicated mainly to scientific research and the fight against AIDS.
