What are home health services and who is eligible?

Home health services refer to services provided in-home to help with recovery from illness or injury. Examples of home health services include intermittent skilled nursing care (e.g. wound care and IV therapy), physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology services. Services may be covered by Medicare Part A and/or Medicare Part B if all of the following conditions are met:

 You are under a doctor’s care and the services received are part of a plan of care established and regularly reviewed by a doctor;

 There is a need, and a doctor certifies a need, for intermittent skilled nursing care or physical therapy, occupational therapy or speech-language pathology services;

 The home health agency providing services is Medicare-certified;

 You are homebound, which means leaving your home without help is difficult or is not recommended due to illness or injury, and a doctor certifies you are homebound.

Your plan of care may also include intermittent home health aide services such as help with daily living activities like bathing, transferring or making a meal, although these services are limited in frequency and duration. Medicare does not pay for ongoing assistance with daily living activities.

You can also explore coverage for home health care services through other insurance you may have, such as Medicaid or private insurance. (Information on home health was obtained from www.medicare.gov.)

2

What are home care services?

Home care services are typically nonmedical services that include assistance with activities of daily living like bathing, dressing, eating, mobility, toileting, and transferring or instrumental activities of daily living such as meal preparation, medication administration or management, grocery shopping, laundry, and cleaning. Assistance with activities of daily living may also be referred to as personal care, i.e. hands-on care administered to an individual’s body. Help with instrumental activities of daily living may be called supportive home care or homemaker services, i.e. services provided around a person’s environment. Personal care services are paid for privately or by Medicaid. Medicare does not pay for personal care services.

What is companion care?

Companion care encompasses a variety of services, including but not limited to help with shopping and errands, adult and senior transportation to and from doctor appointments and social events, and travel companionship. Companion care can also include supportive home care tasks.

What is palliative care?

Palliative care is specialized medical care focusing on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain, and stress of serious and chronic illnesses such as cancer, cardiac disease such as congestive heart failure (CHF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), kidney failure, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and many more. Palliative care can be combined with curative care toward complete recovery.

3

What is a hospice agency?

Considered to be the model for quality, compassionate care for people facing a life-limiting illness or injury, hospice care involves a team-oriented approach to expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support tailored to the patient's needs and wishes. Support is provided to the patient's loved ones as well. At the center of hospice and palliative care is the belief that each of us has the right to die pain-free and with dignity, and that our families will receive the necessary support to allow us to do so. Hospice focuses on caring, not curing, and in most cases care is provided in the patient's home. Services can also be provided in freestanding hospice centers, hospitals, and nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. Hospice services are available to patients of any age, religion, race, or illness. Hospice care is covered under Medicare, Medicaid, most private insurance plans, HMOs, and other managed care organizations.
