Job Description

Position: Master / Department: Production Reports to: Lighting Director

The Master Electrician/Lighting Designer (a full-time exempt position), in collaboration with and under the general direction of the Lighting Director, is responsible for lighting production for all shows and events; including, but not limited to, purchasing supplies, maintenance and repair of all equipment related to electrics; supervising lab students; equipment load-in schedules; supervising crews in assembly and focus of lighting as specified by the Lighting Director; supervising and monitoring all performances of productions; attending tech/dress rehearsals and specified production meetings; serving as Master Electrician or Lighting Designer on outside events using the theater. This position may design shows as assigned by the Production Manager and Artistic Director/Associate Dean. A portion of this full-time PCPA staff position includes serving as a part- time Faculty member of Allan Hancock College for lighting components of the Conservatory curriculum.

Examples of Duties: • Serves as staff supervisor/master electrician for all performances in the Marian, Severson, and Solvang , including events sponsored by other organizations. • Active, side by side supervision of Conservatory students and interns in the Lighting lab classes and production assignments. • Designs lighting for assigned productions. • In collaboration with the Lighting Director and Technical Theatre Program Coordinator will teach assigned components in the lighting curriculum. • Assists and instructs lab students in the repair and maintenance of lighting department equipment. • Serves as a resource for guest lighting designers as directed by Lighting Director. • Maintains a safe, healthy, and clean work/shop environment. • Performs other related work as required.

Qualifications: • Working knowledge of all technical production and performance aspects of theatre. Excellent communication skills – written, oral and visual. • Exceptional computer skills. PCPA Master Electrician/Lighting Designer J.D. Page 1 of 2

• Excellent Vectorworks and Lightwright skills and knowledge base. • Ability to work productively under time pressures and meet deadlines. • Working knowledge/understanding of the principals of lighting, lighting technology, electricity, design, in addition to other aspects as they relate to the overall theatre production process. • Master’s Degree preferred or; Bachelor’s Degree required, with 2-3 years of professional experience in a similar position. Must meet the minimum qualifications for, and successfully achieve, certification as a California community college instructor at Allan Hancock College.

Other Requirements: • Possess a valid California license to drive.

Work Conditions: • Ability to work long hours and work with a flexible schedule. • Must be willing to work at heights, around moving machinery, and with exposure to noise, vibration, and dust. • Must be willing to travel and work at various sites. • Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions while using the appropriate safety procedures. • Ability to work safely in an environment containing potentially hazardous electrical equipment, fumes, and/or materials.

Physical Demands: • This person needs to ascend/descend ladders and work on elevated platforms. • This person needs to occasionally work at a computer terminal in dark environments. • This person may need to position self in elevated catwalks, in theatrical scenery, or unique non-traditional environments. • This person will need to frequently communicate with students and staff in a noisy theater environment. • This person will assist staff and students to move/carry theatrical equipment from and to various sites weighing up to 65 pounds. • This person will need to be able to move/carry theatrical equipment to and from various sites weighing up to 50 pounds.
