Overview: Country program established in 1992. Total active U.S. African Development Foundation Partner Organization: Uganda commitment is $4 million. In addition, there are investments in off-grid energy and youth-led enterprises. The Government of Uganda contributes up to $1 million dollars a year to reach underserved populations.

Panyimur Dei Area Cooperative 2015-2018 $206,737 Sector: Agriculture () Enterprise Ltd (Dei ACE) Town/City: of the West Nile Region 4042-UGA Summary: The project funds will be used to improve incomes of smallholder farmers by increasing the quantity and quality of rice produced and marketed. Farmers are organized in Rural Producer Organizations (RPOs) that collectively market their rice to increase bargaining power.

Banyankole Kweterana 2015-2018 $235,457 Sector: Agriculture (Coffee) Cooperative Union Ltd (BKCU) Town/City: Mbarara 4063-UGA Summary: The project funds will be used to improve the incomes of smallholder coffee farmers by increasing the quantity and quality of coffee production.

Kyempara Farmers Cooperative 2015-2018 $199,269 Sector: Agriculture (Maize and Sunflowers) Society Limited (KFACOS) Town/City: 4165-UGA Summary: The project funds will be used to improve the incomes of smallholder farmers by increasing the quantity and quality of sunflower seed production and marketing.

Manyankabi Area Cooperative 2015-2018 $246,638 Sector: Agriculture (Maize) Enterprises Limited Town/City: Mbarara 4271-UGA Summary: The project funds will be used to provide an up-to-date warehouse facility, working capital to increase the Cooperative's capacity to bulk produce as well as provide inputs to farmers, facilitate improved transport to move produce from collecting centers to the central warehouse and market, and equipment to add value to maize by processing it into higher value maize products.

Bugaya Area Cooperative 2016-2019 $249,237 Sector: Agriculture (Maize and Rice) Marketing Enterprise Limited Beneficiaries: 1,237 farmers (512 female) 4280-UGA Town/City: Summary: The project will provide BACE with farm equipment and production inputs to allow farmers to open more land as well access improved seed and agro-chemicals; working capital to enable the cooperative bulk produce and attract big buyers who can pay better prices; processing facilities in terms of infrastructure and machinery to add value to maize and rice, and expand market opportunities for processed products.

Kiwemba Farmers Cooperative 2016-2018 $96,576 Sector: Agriculture (Maize) Society Limited Town/City: 4288-UGA Summary: The project will build KFCS’ technical skills especially in bulking and collective marketing, provide working capital for purchase of farm inputs and farmers produce. In addition the project will provide storage infrastructure to enhance to cooperative’s capacity to bulk and attract big buyers.

Twezimbe Area Cooperative 2016-2019 $239,594 Sector: Agriculture (Maize) Enterprise Limited Town/City: Kiboga 4291-UGA Summary: The project will provide a storage facility to facilitate bulking of farmers produce, working capital so that farmers can access quality farm inputs and get cash on delivery of produce to the cooperative; and processing equipment to add value to the farmers’ maize.

Kabeywa United Coffee Farmers 2016-2017 $96,228 Sector: Agriculture (Coffee) Association Town/City: Kapchorwa 4301-UGA Summary: With support from USADF, KUCOFA will improve financial and management systems, invest in modern coffee post-harvest equipment, facilitate the distribution of inputs to farmers, and obtain international certification(s) that will make their coffee more competitive in the market.

Manafwa Basin Rice Farmers 2016-2017 $94,605 Sector: Agriculture (Rice) Association Town/City: District, 4318-UGA Summary: The project funds will be used to hire office staff; train staff in good governance practices; purchase accounting software and train staff in financial management; develop policies for finances, human resources, and procurement; hire consultants to develop business and marketing plans, purchase office equipment, and improve the quantity and quality of rice produced by farmer members through training, attending agricultural shows, and the purchase of modern hydro-tiller tractors.

Kasaali Farmers Cooperative 2016-2018 $232,824 Sector: Agriculture (Coffee) Society Limited Town/City: Kyotera, 4328-UGA Summary: The project funds will be used to increase the size of the Association's revolving loan fund for farmers, purchase a truck for transport, build a warehouse for proper coffee storage, facilitate the acquisition of a Fair Trade Certification, and expand into the export market for coffee.

Aratarach Farmers Cooperative 2016-2018 $96,998 Sector: Agriculture () Society Limited Town/City: Nebbi District 4380-UGA Summary: The project funds will be used to hire office staff; train staff in good governance practices; purchase accounting software and train staff in financial management; develop policies for finances, human resources, and procurement; hire consultants to develop business and marketing plans; purchase office equipment; provide working capital for the purchase of farmer's produce, and improve the quantity and quality of cassava produced.

Kweyo Growers Cooperative 2016-2019 $248,035 Sector: Agriculture (Groundnuts) Society Limited Town/City: Gulu District 4469-UGA Summary: The project funds will be used to construct a peanut butter processing facility to increase groundnut value, facilitate transportation of produce to collection centers and the main storage facility, and provide additional crop finance to smallholder farmers in Northern Uganda.

Kamushoko Mixed Famers 2016-2020 $169,168 Sector: Agriculture ( and Bananas) Cooperative Society Limited Town/City: 4551-UGA Project Description: Project funding will support the expansion of trade in millet and bananas for the cooperative. The project will provide a mill house to facilitate milling of farmers produce, working capital so that farmers can access quality farm inputs and get cash on delivery of produce to the cooperative; and processing equipment to add value to the farmers’ millet. In addition, the project will strengthen the cooperative’s marketing skills in order to compete effectively with other millet and banana sellers.

Kayonza Growers Tea Factory 2016-2020 $244,720 Sector: Agriculture. Crops – Tea Limited Town/City: 4600-UGA Project Description: Project funds will be used for packaging machines, packaging materials, UNBS standards certification, branding and marketing of finished products, production inputs at farm lever, and improvements in the company’s financial systems.

GRS Commodities 2016 $100,000 Value Chain: Solar Summary: GRS Commodities Limited is installing an additional 40 kilowatts of solar generation capacity on the Ssese Islands of Lake Victoria. By adding an additional 100 households and 50 more businesses, the project will increase access to local and sustainable sources of electricity, foster business creation, and improve household income by providing energy that can be purchased for less than the price of fossil fuels currently being used.

Green Heat Limited 2016 $100,000 Value Chain: Biogas Summary: Green Heat Limited is installing 20 biogas digesters to pasteurize and store milk on farms in the Teso region of Eastern Uganda. By installing biogas digesters on farmland, Green Heat will enable farmers to use the manure from their own livestock to power milk pasteurization and cooling equipment, strengthening the dairy value chain and reducing poverty through sustainable economic growth.

OneLamp Limited 2016 $100,000 Value Chain: Solar Summary: OneLamp Limited is creating a mobile phone platform that allows rural households to purchase solar products, which can be delivered directly to their door. Using the existing transportation infrastructure, OneLamp Limited’s mobile phone platform will allow low-income, off-grid households to access an on-demand service for clean energy products that can be delivered to their doorstep.

Joint Energy and Environment 2017 $100,000 Sector: Solar Projects Summary: Joint Energy and Environment Projects (JEEP), a woman-owned enterprise, is installing six solar-powered centers in , a remote island district in Lake Victoria. Each of the centers will have cold storage facilities which fishermen can rent to store their fish and fetch a higher market price, as well as phone charging and solar home systems for sale. Each will be run by a women’s group trained in bookkeeping and will repay a portion of their profits to replicate the model in the region.

Conservation and Development 2017 $100,000 Sector: Solar Uganda Limited Summary: Conservation and Development Uganda Limited (CODE), a woman-owned enterprise, is selling an initial 350 Agro-Eco kits using a flexible repayment financing model, which will provide alternative and safer fuel sources. Using a low-cost distribution system via Village Savings and Loan Associations, CODE will collect revenues and expand the business in the region.

George invests in people so they can invest in small and growing businesses in East Africa. He matches opportunities and provides a credit rating system to consumers to stimulate future investment.

BRENDA KATWESIGYE 2017 $25,000 Value Chain: Health (Technology) Wazi Vision Summary: In Uganda, more than 10 percent of school children have undiagnosed vision problems, but cannot afford prescription eyeglasses, even if they had their eyesight tested. Brenda is tackling these intertwined problems by providing a cost-effective, mobile diagnostic vision test, and turning recycled plastic into affordable eyewear for low-income students.

FRANCIS XAVIER ASIIMWE 2017 $10,000 Value Chain: Health Kaaro Health Finance Summary: Kaaro Health Finance Limited (KHF) product solutions are designed to eliminate or mitigate both energy and finance access issues by providing tailor-made, flexible lease-to-own medical and renewable energy equipment financing to private healthcare entrepreneurs who are already operating or intending to expand into underserved rural areas.

RHODAH IRAKIZA 2017 $10,000 Value Chain: Supply Chain Logistics Mr. Gift Summary: A social enterprise focused on improving access for smallholder flower farmers to local markets by improving the supply chain.

EMMANUEL LUYINDA 2017 $10,000 Value Chain: Agribusiness Village Chicken Summary: A social enterprise focused on empowering rural women in Kavule, Luwero district to start and run sustainable and profitable poultry ventures and to supply nutritious chicken meat and eggs to the community.

HASHIM MUTANJE 2017 $10,000 Value Chain: Renewable Energy Solar Pipo Summary: The founder is CEO of People and Energy Limited, a start-up company that seeks to match consumers’ energy needs with available, suitable energy solutions through its SolarPipo app.

JONATHAN ASUMA 2017 $10,000 Value Chain: Agribusiness AgroStretch Limited Summary: AgroStretch Limited develops sustainable, efficient and affordable products and service for smallholder farmers to increase their profitability. It has developed a Fresh Tomato Bank to process tomatoes into puree and enable tomato farmers to minimize their post-harvest losses and obtain a fair and steady price for their produce.

TONNY KWANGA 2017 $10,000 Value Chain: Agribusiness Kizimba Social Enterprise Summary: A social enterprise focused on goat breeding and rearing and providing necessary skills training in modern farming to youth farmers.

DENIS MOI KIPROTICH 2017 $10,000 Value Chain: Agribusiness Slopes of Mount Elgon Honey Summary: Slopes of Mount Elgon Honey is a company providing gainful employment to disabled persons as beekeepers, while at the same time reversing the worrisome decline in the bee population and honey production in Uganda.

CHARLES MUBIRU 2017 $10,000 Sector: Waste Management Life Tomorrow Summary: A social enterprise focused on proper waste management, specifically to improve the quality of life and environmental conditions in Mukono Municipality in Uganda.

FIONA RUKWANZI 2017 $10,000 Value Chain: Food Processing Nyunya Summary: A venture that produces a probiotic yogurt which offers health benefits to consumers with varying conditions, including diabetes and digestive disorders such as diarrhea caused by infections.
