Meeting Minutes

Saturday, 01/11/2020 Called to Order at 10:01am Pledge of Allegiance Let’s all pray, led by our Chapter Chaplain, Brent Daniels New Members: Greg Bass Guests: Welcome, we had 2 visiting with Connie Zimmer. Also, Leon from Wisconsin. Dealership Reports, Ken Vitulli: Happy New Year! Do you all remember Y2K? Time Fly’s! We’ve been here 4 years, and we are still growing. There’s a danger in thinking you can define you top. You must be careful not to set a ceiling while you are still growing. And customer experience is what leads to growth. Thank you for continuing to come in and interact with our dealership. The outlook for 2020 is to get better at engaging our relationship. Like it or not – we’re married. And we want to see that relationship continue to grow and strengthen. ’ I m looking to you for ideas as to how to make it better. Director, Randy Stanton: 2019 was a great year! We are looking ahead at some changes for 2020. We’ve named the Discretionary Officers. Some are familiar names, and some are new names: CLAP Records Officer – decided to be omitted this year and the points will be managed by the Assis- tant Director, Wayne “Hop” Barkman. *Amended on 01/18/2020 by unanimous vote – Glen Zielinski will remain the CLAP Records Officer. Head Road Captain – Richie “Jughead” Hicks Ladies of Harley – Dale Barkman Membership Officer – Jerry Armstrong Newsletter Editor – Tom Filmon Photographer – Leada Collins Safety Officer – Jim LaVigne Sunshine Lady – Sherry Oaks Webmaster – Michael Sheldon Chaplain – Brent Daniels – Dustin Chester will be the backup for any events that Brent is unable to attend. A new format is being added to our current Saddle-Sore Award and the CLAP Points Award. Going for- ward we will have the Gold, Silver & Bronze awards for each, being the 1st, 2nd & 3rd place winners of highest miles and points. The Gold or 1st place position will remain at a $50.00 award in the form of a gas card for each category. Top Passenger Miles will remain at a $25.00 gas card as well as a certificate of achievement. Top Passenger Points has been removed from the award system as the Silver and Bronze place positions will cover that. We also voted on the use of the Google Calendar and it is now live with the entire year up and available to place your rides or events on. Please email [email protected] when wanting to add anything to the calendar. The website has been updated to include PDF versions of sign in sheets, guest release forms, tutorials on ordering patches and other miscellaneous information. All documents are located under the Members Only section and the password is PCH3877. These will no longer be included in the newsletter. Hard copies are available for anyone not having access to print from their home computer. We can help with the navigation of that website if any member needs it. A chapter overnight trip has been added to the calendar for Thunder on the Beach in Panama City, FL during April 30th thru May 2nd. Anyone wishing to stay over to Sunday the 3rd is welcome to do so. Assistant Director, Wayne “Hop” Barkman: Please be sure to bring in or email with your beginning mileage for 2020 if you plan to participate in the mileage challenge for 2020. The 3rd Sunday/New Member Ride will continue for the 2020-chapter year. Anyone is free to join us, and it is a point ride as it is on the calendar. A Road Captain meeting will follow this month’s ride in the meeting room upstairs of the dealership. It will be 01/19/2020. Please be sure your sign in sheets are legible so that anyone attending an event will be certain to receive their points. You may print your name on the sign in sheets of its easier to read. We are required to maintain those sheets for 1 year and the guest release forms are maintained for 7 years. Please be sure to bring the originals to the meetings if you do not have the opportunity to turn those in prior to. The Accident Management Scene class has been scheduled for Saturday, February 22nd, it will be an all- day class, 9-5, flyers are available on the back table. You can register online. There will be coffee and donuts that morning and lunch will be provided. A call for volunteers to help set up the class the night before, Jughead said that he could be available. Special mention, during our New Year’s Day ride, Glen Zielinski had an issue with his battery. Jeff Corll had a jump box and several members worked together to get the battery charged enough to start his bike and get him home and avoid a tow. We have a great group; we work together with things and that’s what makes this Chapter. Secretary, Tamara Stanton: Anyone wishing to purchase a chapter rocker, Jeff Corll still has 2 large rockers at $35.00 each. Reminder that the Blessing of the Bikes will be immediately following the meeting today. We will meet in the Florida Health Department parking lot on Hwy 33. We should begin around 11:30am. If everyone will pull in and begin lining up in the parking spaces behind Randy’s truck so that we can get all the bikes and members in the pictures this year that would be great. The ceremony will last about 20 minutes and each person attending will receive a commemorative item. Special thanks to Russ Simcoe for lead- ing the lunch ride following the ceremony. In addition, we are selling raffle tickets at $1 each at a chance to win a Bikers Bag filled with an estimat- ed $250 in items, many which are Harley Davidson brand. You can purchase as many tickets as you wish, and the money is going to fund the next project being worked on by the Ladies of Harley, which is a valentine gift bag for the children’s ward at the Carol Jenkins Barnett building. There are 30 beds with children ranging in ages of infant to pre-teen. The bags are around $5 each and we are making 30- 35, as we will not know exactly the age demographic until the week of delivery. We plan to deliver them sometime during the week prior to Valentine’s Day. The bags will include age related toys, stuffed ani- mals, rattles, sippy cups, valentines, & stickers. We hope to make a few of them smile and we appreci- ate anyone who participates in buying a raffle ticket!

Treasurer, Mark Miley: The Chapter is in great financial health. Thanks to Annie Modica and Jean Armstrong for keeping such thorough records and for all the help during the bulk of the 2019 year. Also, thanks so much to the Ladies of Harley for the work at the Christmas Party. It was another great party. Also, the Flipping for Charity pancake breakfast is coming up next month. A flyer for that will be coming out in the next newsletter. That ride will be led from the dealership to Tiger Town, details will follow. Activities Officer, Jean Armstrong: Russ Simcoe will be leading the lunch ride today after the Blessing of the Bikes to Coyote Rojo. Please be sure to use the [email protected] email address when requesting something be added to the calendar. Safety Officer, Jim Lavigne: The snowbirds are among us. Be Visible! Make sure you are seen. Pick your lane and maintain it. How many people see all the road signs out there? Not everything is seen, including us. So, do what you can to make yourself visible to the drivers around us. In addition, Glen Zielinski reminded us to use our turn signals. Let the drivers and riders around you know what you in- tend to do. It’s how we communicate in a group. CLAP Records Officer: N/A Head Road Captain, Richie “Jughead” Hicks: We have been invited to ride in the funeral proces- sion for the fallen Lakeland Police Officer, Paul Dunn. You must renew by the February meeting or you will be removed from the membership list. Newsletter Editor, Tom Filmon: Anyone having anything to add to the newsletter, just send me an email or give me a call, and we’ll get it in there. The deadline is usually around the 25th of the month. Photographer, Leada Collins: No new business Sunshine Lady, Sherry Oaks: There’s a card for Dennis Frye on the back table for everyone to please sign. He will be having surgery next week. Bike Week History Perhaps it was the appeal of hard sand, warm winter days and the excitement of that first motorcycle race on the beach, that made Daytona Beach the home of Bike Week. Maybe it was the spirited activities surrounding the event that have kept people keep coming back. Whatever the case, Bike Week has been a tradition since January 24, 1937 - the inaugural running of the Daytona 200.The first race took place on a 3.2 mile beach and road course, located south of Daytona Beach. Ed Kretz of Monterey Park, CA was its first winner, riding an American made Indian motorcycle and averaging 73.34 mph. Kretz also won the inaugural City of Daytona Beach trophy. The 1937, race course ran approximately one and a half miles north on the beach; through a 1/4 mile turn where the sand was banked, and then onto the paved, public roadway portion for the trip south. Coming back on the final turn, another high sand bank awaited riders as they raced on the hard sands of the beach. Interestingly enough, starting times for these events were dictated by the local tide tables. The races continued from 1937 to 1941. In the early years the Daytona 200 was also called the “Handlebar Derby” by local racing scribes. Harley-Davidson has and continues to be a huge part of Bike Week in Daytona Beach. In 1940, Harley-Davidson not only won the Daytona 200 mile road race Championship, but 8 of the top ten were won by Harley-Davidson. In 1942, the Daytona 200 was discontinued because of World War II. Its sanctioning body, the American Motorcycling Association (AMA) solemnly noted it was “in the interests of national defense” that the event was canceled. With the war, came a general rationing of fuel, tires and key engine components. Even though the racing event was “officially” called off, people still showed up for an “unofficial” party called Bike Week. On February 24, 1947, the famous motorcycle race resumed and was now promoted by the legendary Bill . Newspaper stories of the period recount that the city fathers asked townsfolk to open their homes to the visiting motorcyclists because all hotel rooms and camping areas were filled to capacity. The 1947 Daytona 200 featured a record 176 riders. In 1948, a new beach - road course was used because of developments along the beach. Organizers were forced to move the event further south, towards Ponce Inlet. The new circuit measured 4.1 miles. The last Daytona 200 to be held on the beach - road course took place in 1960. In 1961, the famous race was moved to the Daytona International Speedway. Bike Week has always had a flavor of its own. Sometime after the war, the event began to take on a rugged edge. While the motorcycle races on the beach were organized, events surrounding the race were not. As time passed, locals became afraid of the visitors and law enforcement officers and city officials were less than enthusiastic about what some termed an “invasion”. Relations between the Bikers and law enforcement officials continued to worsen. When things appeared to be at their worst (after the 1986 event), a special task force was organized by the city in cooperation with the local chamber of commerce to improve relations and change the magnitude and scope of the event. Today Bike Week has transformed into a 10-day festival that expands throughout Volusia County. There are hundreds of events for motorcycle enthusiasts to enjoy. Bike Week now welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors annually and is enjoyed by locals and motorcycle enthusiasts’ worldwide. Through the efforts of many dedicated individuals and groups, the Bike Week of today is an outstanding event drawing bikers from across the U.S. and multiple countries. It normally takes place during the first full week of March, though the date has been known to change based on other events happening at Daytona International Speedway.

Daytona Bike Week runs from a Friday through the next full week, eventually concluding on the Sunday 10 days out. This year's rally runs from March 6-15; the perfect time to be in Florida, especially for Northern bikers who have been waiting all winter to get their machines out of storage. March in Florida offers plenty of beautiful sunshine, comfortably warm temperatures, and lots to see and do.

If you've never been to Daytona Bike Week, you owe it to yourself to come down to Florida one of these years. It is an event like no other. You will make plenty of new friends, see some incredible machines, and just have a heck of a good time. And if you're like most bikers, one visit will not be enough. You will come back year after year.
