Over the past 15 years, electricity consumption, solid waste disposal and water consumption in Ma- cau all showed significant growth rates, according to data compiled by the city’s Environmental Protec- tion Bureau. While the estimated annual greenhouse gas emissions for Macau had been in general de- creasing from the mid-2000s onwards, such emis- sions rose again in 2015 and 2016, according to the most recent data. The liberalisation of the casino sector and the economic development that followed has signifi-

authorities that by May 2018 at least 15 percent of the passenger buses run by each casino licensee would be powered by clean-energy sources, either electricity or compressed natural gas. According to Macau’s Transport Bureau, by 2021 all shuttle buses operated by resort firms are expected to be compliant with the so-called “Euro V” standard or above. Euro V refers to a scale of emission standards for acceptable limits for exhaust emissions of vehicles, set by the European Union. The scale varies from Euro I (the least stringent level) to Euro VI. volume. The material generated is later processed by third parties into fish feed. Wynn Macau Ltd too operates a composter to re- duce food waste. Such waste is said to account for approximately 42 percent of the Macau operator’s total waste at point of operations. Melco Resorts says it aims to achieve “zero-waste resorts” by 2030. That means, according to the com- pany, “sending no waste to landfill or incinerating waste without energy recovery”. In 2018, the majori- ty of the firm’s waste – a total of 11,270 tonnes – was incinerated with energy recovery. During that period, waste to landfill tonnage by Melco Resorts decreased by 16 percent in year-on-year terms, while waste sent for composting more than doubled. Sands China produced in aggregate approximate- ly 36,800 tonnes of waste in 2017. The group says it spent much of the following year taking active mea- sures to increase the amount of waste it diverted to systems of sustainability.
