Happy 2020 to all our Community House members and Loch Sport readers.

Our Twilight Market in December was a fantastic end to the year. We were very lucky with the weather this time and had record numbers of visitors and market stalls. As usual, the food vendors didn’t let us down, again serving up to the long queues with delicious cuisine. Many talented people showcased their wares at their stalls giving a great variety of interesting things to look at and buy. Our stall holders reported great sales and the general public gave terrific feedback on what a great afternoon the market provided for locals and the many visitors to our little town.

Thank you also to the army of volunteers that help to run the market on the day and get it all happening before and after the event.

The addition of our sand sculpting artist, Leo, added an interesting feature. We have already gained extra sponsorship for him to build a bigger sculpture at the next Twilight Market. Thank you to Foodworks, Brennan Contracting and Ridley Plumbing for their sponsorshop. The pony rides, also created an added attraction for the kids.

All in all, the Twilight Market, serves its purpose well – to raise money for running costs of our community bus and create a great event for our town locals and visitors.

Our Communtity House bus was kept very busy over the last couple of months. As well as the regular trips to the Sale Aquatic Pool on Wednesdays and trips to the Wedge and the cinema, we organised a couple of Christmas shopping trips to , and Fountain Gate. Also the bus was hired by Lakeview Bar & Bistro to take their pool group to a competition in ; another group went to the Sale Greyhounds; the Angling Club hire the bus for one of their out of town fishing weekends; there was a private hire for a 21st birthday group; our dance group and swimming group used the bus also for their own Christmas parties in Sale.

If you have an idea for a bus trip, pop in to the office and let us know. Many thanks goes to our wonderful volunteer bus drivers Alan and Troy. They do a marvellous job.

The Community House annual Rock the Loch boat cruise on 15 February was sold out out in one week and looks like being another great afternoon. We will be able to report on the event in the next issue of the LINK.

Community House membership renewals are due at the beginning of each year. Pop in to the office anytime and pay the annual $4 fee. We are holding a sausage sizzle for our members on Tuesday 4th February at 12.00 pm outside Arrawarra.

Our March market will be on Sunday 8 March 2019 at the Lakeview Bar & Bistro.

Volume 23 - Issue 1 - Page 5 LOCH SPORT COMMUNITY REPRESENTATIVE GROUP

Meets on the 1st Tuesday of each month, except 2nd Tuesday in November at 5.00 pm in the Public Hall (no meeting in January). AGM IN December Letters to the Secretary LSCRG PO Box 129 Loch Sport 3851 Email: [email protected] Website www.lochsportcrg.org.au

A big thanks to all who attended the public meeting on 11th January. It was very informiative of where Loch Sport stands in the government scheme of things. Unless we speak up, they will continue to ignore us. We roared and they heard. If they continue to falter, we will roar louder. A big issue we have after fire safety is getting people back into town to support our local businesses. They will hurt from the holidaymakers who left after New Year’s Day.

The Annual General Meeting of the Loch Sport CRG was held on Tuesday December 3 at 10.00 am. President Barry Meyer, Vice President Justin Renehan, Committee Noeleen Brown, Kaye Hogben, have one more year to serve. Newly elected, for a 2 year term, are Committee Trish Garnham, Tarek Clements, Eileen Grange who will continue as Treasurer until a new one is found, Bill Klein is honourary past President. We thank these people for being willing to serve on our Committee. Two committee positions are vacant at the moment.

We will continue to push for a safer living space both into town and in town. The next challenge is getting the fuel load within town removed.

Our strength is in our numbers as a community group which puts forward a project and will be far stronger than individuals contacting council with ideas. As a community we can have a bigger voice than individuals. A project is important to our community as we live here.

We have a facebook page ‘Whats on in Loch Sport’ and a large mailchimp database for monthly news from the meetings and important info from Government groups. Register if you wish to receive emails. [email protected]

A new look for our CRG. The Wellington Shire has changed the way the LSCRG will interact with them. In future we will not be required to produce a community plan but projects under a new title of the Community Collaborations Program, each will be individual group projects.

If you have a passion for the future of Loch Sport come along and get involved in your community group. If you are not getting any satisfaction from sending a CAR 9Customer Action Request) to Council, bring it to everyone’s attention via the CRG. If you have an idea for something in Loch Sport please come along to a meeting and share your ideas.

Next meeting Tuesday 4th February at the public hall at 5:00pm.

Barry Meyer President

Volume 23 - Issue 1- Page 6 WHY I LIVE IN LOCH SPORT

ELISE AND COREY KENT

I moved to Loch Sport in 1999 when I was only 6 years old.

My parents decided to make the move to Lochy, because they had been holidaying here since the 70’s and saw it as a beautiful place to raise my brother and I. Growing up here I went to the local primary school with my twin brother Adam, it was a good close knit school community.

Growing up, sport was my biggest love and the towns local tennis club was perfect for that. Many great tennis players always made for great competition. When I left school I decided to pair my love of tennis with a personal training qualification that I studied for in . After completing my course, the city life was not for me. I needed the beach, the sand and a country town feel.

Six years ago I met Corey, my husband of two years. Corey grew up here as a child but shifted away when he was ten and came back seven years ago. I don’t even need to ask him why he loves Loch Sport because I know the answer will be for the fishing. He is always fishing and his family love to water ski and be out on the boat. Corey is a qualified Arborist and we run a small tree company in town called CNE tree services. He is currently studying for his Diploma of Arboriculture.

We finally decided it was time to start a family and we are expecting our first child to arrive in June 2020. Because we both grew up here we know that Loch Sport is a perfect place to raise a family.

We have met and still meet the most amazing people in town and have made life long friends from all different walks of life that will last a lifetime. Loch Sport has a way of introducing you to the most beautiful and kind people, both residents and holiday makers.

Friends of ours always ask why we want to live in Loch Sport and it’s pretty simple really. There isn’t many places like it. There is something for every one whether it be the scenery and wildlife or the surf fishing and boating as my husband likes. As for me, it’s the fact that I can walk out my door take one look around and be relaxed straight away, call Buddy (our dog) and walk for hours.

Our Christmas trading although affected by the recent bush fires, still did quite well. Our Committee and patrons at the RSL are thinking of the people who have been affected by the recent fires and wish them all well.

The RSL has installed a new cooling system to the dining room, on the hot days we have had so far our system is working well.

The RSL will be having its AGM on Sunday the 29th March at 2pm at the club rooms. Voting by Service people, life members and Affiliates. All other are welcome to attend.

Trivia night early December was well attended and enjoyed by 80 people. Our thanks go out to Leanne Martin for her efforts on the night.

We hope to have another Trivia night in the year with dates yet to be announced.

RSL WOMENS AUXILIARY We hope everyone had a happy & safe Christmas & New Year.

Our Christmas raffle was a huge success with ten hampers won. Congratulations to all the winners we hope you enjoyed them.

On behalf of our members, thankyou. Murray Brown, President Volume 23 - Issue 1 - Page 8 For your information LOCH SPORT FIRE BRIGADE FIRE STATION 5146 0997 G’day all,

Well, what a time it’s been. Fires in every State, smoke like we have never seen for a long time, our boys have been helping out where they can. A couple of our firefighters got the call and were flown by RAAF C130 to Coffs Harbour, then a bus to Kempsey where they assisted with the Kempsey Asset Protection burn off in November. Then on 10th December, a strike team went to Holsten’s Station, South East Ensay, on 20th December to Bendoc Tuppert and areas, again on 30th December to Bombala, Buchan, Swan Reach, getting trapped in Buchan one night due to the road being blocked by fallen trees and losing all communications. They were able to get out the next afternoon, being New Year’s Eve.

Our local SES was also involved with evacuations in Buchan, then on to Mallacoota but could not get in. And here we are on January 13th and it’s still going, and will be for some time. I’m sure our crews will be called on again, I thank those for their incredible response.

On a lighter note, we attended the Twilight Market and it was well attended. The Brigade was there for the kids to check out the truck. The NYE fireworks display had to be cancelled due to the extreme weather conditions. I believe the fireworks will return at Easter. The Lions Bush Market was also cancelled due to extreme weather and smoke haze.

There was a public meeting at the Public Hall on 11th January to discuss the Loch Sport Coastal Area Fire 2012 documents, what has been done and what needs to be done. The meeting was represented by the Mayor Alan Hall, Danny O’Brien, MP, and representatives from all emergency services. The main topics were firebreak clearance along the Loch Sport-Longford Road, hazard reduction in the Coastal Park, improvement of fire break at the National Park and security of the town's power supply. These issues were in the 2012 Fire Commissioner’s report. The meeting was very well attended by Loch Sport residents and holiday makers with over 300 people gathering in the Hall, most were enthused to have their say. We now wait for the outcome.

Yes, I am still harping on about trying to get numbers on houses, it helps us, the Ambo’s, SES, Police and tradies when looking for your house, it’s not that hard, there are more numbers on houses now, keep it up people for your safety.

HAVE YOUR FIRE PLAN READY! WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO! HOW ARE YOU GOING TO DO IT!

Stay safe. Dennis Berg, Captain Loch Sport CFA

SES LOCH SPORT UNIT

The Unit has been extremely busy with the SES Taskforce getting water and food and importantly lighting and support to affected townships in the bush fire areas, in particular Buchan where three of our members (myself, John Cauchi and Chris Wood were deployed to on New Years Eve and spent the next day there. We were also due to be redeployed to Mallacoota by Helicopter, but due to the thick smoke this had to be cancelled. The Loch Sport Unit in East Strike Team One and is represented at The Incident Control Centre In Bairnsdale. We acknowledge the fantastic work being carried out by our firefighters and wish them all the very best in their endeavours to get the fires under control. The Unit has played a key role in supporting the emergency services, and this will continue whilst the fires are still raging. I hope that the emergency action plan flyers that we have been distributing over the past years helped you to plan for an emergency and in particular the one that we are now facing. If you require any assistance in planning for an emergency, please call into the SES Shed on a Sunday morning and one of our members will be able to assist you in this task. I would like to thank our members for actively playing a part and assisting where they have been directed to in this emergency. We are still looking for operational members to join the unit, so if you are interested just call in and make yourself known. Once again thank you for all your support and we hope that this coming year is a happy and safe one for all our Loch Sport residents and visitors. Please take care especially during this fire season. Terry Ford Loch Sport SES Unit Controller

Volume 23 - Issue 1 - Page 9 LOCH SPORT GOLF CLUB

Summer has arrived and with it we have all seen the result of the devastating fires throughout Victoria and NSW and our thoughts go out to all those affected, many of whom are part of the golfing community. The best way we can help once the threat is over and the communities are recovering is to visit the areas affected, spend your money, play golf and help them get back on their feet.

If your New Years’ Resolution was to get more active then Loch Sport Golf Club can help you! We have plenty of open Green Space that you can hit, whack, walk, thump, mistime, and play in the sand!

This year, we reintroduced a “chicken run” which has been played on Monday afternoons when possible. Unfortunately it has been affected by total fire bans, rain and the loss of visitors due to evacuations etc but will continue to be played during summer so if you are a social golfer, visitor or just want to get moving on that resolution, come along for a bit of fun… 4.00pm for 4.30pm Start.

The Club would like to express its thanks to Peter from MacAlister Fencing for his work on the fence which runs along the 9th fairway and the road. The fence has become necessary to prevent motor vehicles from entering the course and injuring the wildlife. This unfortunately has happened in recent times and is devastating for the members and those who enjoy a walk on the course.

Planning is going ahead for the Sand Green Championships which will be held on the weekend of 28th-30th August, more to come on this later. We are also making progress on the new Clubhouse and are currently in the process of obtaining quotes etc to allow us to apply for grants. More to follow.

The Club is always looking for ways to increase our membership and have more people play, it’s a great way to get some exercise and fresh air and have fun at the same time so if you’ve ever thought you might like to have a hit, or are new to town and are a golfer or would like to be, please come along any Wednesday or Saturday morning. We tee off at 9.00am during summer months and are back in the clubhouse about 1.30pm. Alternatively, please call our secretary, Robyn Bate on 0427844496 and follow our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Loch-Sport-Golf-Club-Inc-245765649671614/ keep up with the news.

Volume 23 - Issue 1 - Page 11 LOCH SPORT LIONS CLUB

The Loch Sport Lions Children’s Christmas Party was a great success this year. The children had lots of fun with races and games, and bags of goodies were handed out to each child before Santa and his helper arrived on a fire truck with gifts for the children. Again, thankyou to the Loch Sport General Store for the generous donation of icy poles and sweets.

For 45 years, Esso has provided funds for Lions in the district to distribute Christmas Vouchers to those who do not have family around during the Festive Season or need a little extra “cheer” at this time of the year. We are extremely grateful to Esso for their generosity and thank them sincerely for their ongoing support.

Our Christmas cakes were a huge success this year. Thankyou to everyone who purchased one or more of the delicious cakes. Special thanks to the staff of Loch Sport General Store who managed to sell about 3 cartons for us, very much appreciated.

Unfortunately, due to extreme weather conditions and smoke from the bushfires and after consulting with our CFA Captain, it was decided to cancel the Bush Market which was to be held on Saturday 4th January. We apologise for the short notice, but the decision was made for the interest of everyone concerned.

The Australia Day celebrations are always well attended and there were plenty of free sausages and lamingtons available to help celebrate the occasion. The usual Australian Day formalities and the raising of the flag were held and the 2020 Loch Sport Citizen of the Year Presentation was awarded to a very worthy recipient who has dedicated a lot of time to community activities (report was done before publication).

The Easter Festival will be held on Saturday 11th April. The Lions will again be serving early morning BBQ breakfast from 7.30am followed by a sausage sizzle and vegie burgers. Children’s races will be run and Easter eggs and medals will be awarded. We will also have our regular dog competition which is a favourite amongst the young and old and the gumboot and handbag throwing competition will be held for the adults. So come along and join in the fun!!

The annual Lions Ride for Sight will be starting in Loch Sport this year in April. Riders and support will arrive in Loch Sport on Wednesday 1st April and depart Loch Sport for Yarram on Thursday 2nd April, Loch Sport Lions will be sponsoring this event.

Don’t forget that Bingo is held every Wednesday starting at 1.00pm at the Community Hall and everyone is most welcome. Afternoon tea provided.

Loch Sport Lions continue to sell raffle tickets at the Lakeview Bar & Bistro on Saturdays. Currently, all proceeds from these raffles will be donated to Gippsland Bushfire Relief.

With some of our Lions moving on, we are now looking for new Lions, so if you have some time to give, we would love you to consider joining Lions. We do a wide variety of tasks and raise funds to help out in times of disasters or help our local community in any way we can.

Our meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at the Community Hall at 6.30 pm for 7pm start. We would love to see you there. If you require further information, you can contact our President, Noeleen Brown: 5146 0026 or Secretary, Wendy Dodd: 0402 503 190.

POST OFFICE GALLERY LOCH SPORT

The gallery ended 2019 in a very strong position, with a great bunch of volunteers aiming to ensure it is open from 10 am to 1.30 pm every day (though sometimes people are just not available – if we are not open during listed hours please call again).

Photos of works are now displayed on the Loch Sport Noticeboard (Facebook) and this has reached a much wider audience with a consequent rise in visitor numbers. It seems many townspeople and tourists are pleased to find gifts and artworks of high quality so close at hand. If they ask for extra items or variations their requests are given prompt attention.

New additions to gallery stock include home-made melts, woven keyrings and bracelets, and string bags with intricate patterning. Photos of the Loch Sport environment are also very popular, both the large scale scenes and the smaller framed works.

An extensive range of art books is on sale at $10 for the large books and $5 small. Proceeds go to the gallery.

VOLUME 23 - Issue 1- Page 12 LOCH SPORT COMMUNITY HOUSE DANCE GROUP

Our December Christmas dance was another enjoyable Day. Lots of extra prizes, lucky spots, Christmas goodies and a raffle.

Great music was supplied by Ian Shields.

WELLINGTON SHIRE

Wellington Shire Council has introduced a new way to help community groups and individuals organise successful community projects.

Through the Community Collaborations Program, communities who have a project idea that provides broad community benefit may request for Council support and advice.

Wellington Shire Council Mayor Alan Hall said the new program would better support those with great ideas see their projects through to fruition.

“An individual or group may come to Council seeking advice on how to progress a project idea or how to assist their own community to create, develop and manage their own projects,” he said.

“They may require advice on potential funding sources or appropriate state or local authorities that may assist with their project idea.

“Where there is a direct alignment with Council’s strategies and policies, Council may also participate in the work of the community project.“This program will assist people with the next steps.”

The Community Collaborations program also offers a series of free community sessions for different sectors of community throughout the year including current offerings of “Placemaking in Your Community” and “Crowdfunding for Community Groups” sessions.

For more details (including program information guidelines and application form, free community resource and sessions) visit Council’s website www.wellington.vic.gov.au and search for Community Collaborations, or email: [email protected]

REMINDER FOR DOG OWNERS

Wellington Shire Council welcomes holiday-makers and their pets to Loch Sport and surrounding beachside towns this summer. For the safety and comfort of all, please keep your dog on a lead when visiting the foreshore at Loch Sport and around the playground and barbeque areas. The Lions Park playground area, on the foreshore, is the only designated dog on-lead public space in Loch Sport. Also, remember to take your clean up bags with you. It is your responsibility to clean up after your dog. If you get caught out, dog bag dispensers are located at various places around Loch Sport. Cleaning up after your dog keeps Loch Sport looking and smelling beautiful. For a full list of places throughout Wellington Shire where you are required to keep your dog on a lead, visit www.wellington.vic.gov.au/dogsonleads

LOCH SPORT FORESHORE COMMITTEE OF MANAGEMENT

As the summer proceeds we are experiencing wild fires in many parts of Victoria and interstate and feel justly fearful for our safety should Loch Sport also experience such fire attacks.

The lack of preparedness should we experience such natural disasters in the town are a matter of great concern for residents and visitors to Loch Sport. Hopefully the various authorities will be able to address some of these deficiencies in the immediate future.

We must be ever vigilant and exercise great care with BBQ’s and campfires that are used in the town precinct. The Foreshore Committee is aware of the debate raging regarding the clearing of native vegetation and the provision of adequate fire breaks, contrasting with the push to retain appropriate habitat for native animals and the enjoyment of residents and visitors.

Resident and visitors are reminded that the removal of native vegetation is illegal and severe penalties may be applied.

Works along the walking track proceeds as labour and funds allow. Where possible we have attempted to provide a wider track with a good surface free of obstacles for all to enjoy. The Foreshore Committee continues to make representation to Wellington Shire to provide appropriate access to Lake Victoria in the vicinity of Toorak Avenue where there is a reserve of council land. Previously there has been access through vacant blocks of land, however houses have now been built on those blocks.

Erosion of the foreshore continues to be a major problem - if you live near where trees have been planted we encourage you to water them during the long summer, hopefully as they grow they will assist in stabilising the foreshore.

During the winter the main dredge belonging to Gippsland Ports was able to deepen the main channel from the Marina and deposit the sand spoil to the foreshore in the vicinity of houses immediately east of the Marina.

Please note that Gippsland Ports has warned boat owners that it will remove unauthorised moorings from Lake Victoria, they may also seize vessels attached to such moorings. These moorings pose a safety risk to other vessels, boaters and swimmers.

Expressions of interest from members of the Loch Sport community to join the Foreshore Committee were called for in September 2019 – the term of the Committee for the past three years expired in November 2019. A new Committee has been appointed and will have their first meeting late in January.

The Committee wishes all members of the Loch Sport community and visitors to our beautiful town a safe and enjoyable holiday time in this wonderful part of the world. Best wishes for 2020, Rosalind Steel.

Dr R P Steel Honorary Chairperson Loch Sport Foreshore Committee of Management Inc. [email protected]

A bushfire affected area is where water-bombing activities have occurred, and fire retardants, ash or debris have fallen directly onto properties. If you live in a bushfire affected area your private drinking water could be contaminated from debris, ash, dead animals, aerial fire retardants and water-bombing.

If the water tastes, looks or smells unusual, do not drink, use for food preparation, brushing teeth or give to animals (pets or livestock). Use bottled water for drinking.

There are things you can do to protect your private drinking water supply to ensure it is not affected by a bushfire event. In non- bushfire affected areas, smoke tainted rainwater is unlikely to be a health concern. If you are concerned about the taste of your rainwater, use bottled water for drinking and continue to use your rainwater for other uses.

Volume 23 - Issue 1 - Page 14 continued

Protect your private drinking water tank from contamination. Before a bushfire develop a Home Emergency Plan. Consider how to protect your private drinking water supply as part of your Home Emergency Plan. Talk to your family to make sure more than one person knows what to do and how to manage your private drinking water supply.

Know your private drinking water supply including where your water comes from, for example rainwater or groundwater supply.

Make sure your water tank is properly sealed and tank covers are fitted.Install first flush diverters, leaf stoppers on downpipes, and gutter guards. Disconnect the downpipes from your tank as soon as there is a fire risk to avoid windblown ash, debris, fire retardants or water from water-bombing, entering the tank and contaminating your drinking water.

After a bushfire: Prior to reconnecting your downpipes, hose off the roof catchment area or wait for a good flush of rain to prevent contaminants entering your tank. If you need to clean your roof manually, take care to prevent slips and falls. This can be done by a professional cleaner. You can find out more information through your local council.

What happens if my downpipes have not been disconnected prior to a fire? If you suspect your tank water is contaminated, or the water tastes, looks or smells unusual, do not drink, use for food preparation, burshing teeth or give too animals (pets or livestock) as it may be affected by the following:fire retardants or water from water bombing, which may have been used around your property. There is a potential that these may have entered your tank. Disconnect your downpipes prior to a rain event. This will help prevent further debris and ash entering your tank. Use bottled water for drinking.

Boiling water does not remove fire retardants or other chemicals from your water. Fire affected water in your tank can still be used for irrigation and firefighting purposes. Water testing is not necessary.

If your tank needs to be cleaned, get a professional tank cleaner. Never enter a tank. Tanks are confined spaces and are very dangerous; the risks include loss of consciousness, asphyxiation and death.

Once the tank has been professionally drained and cleaned, refill with water from a source known to be safe for drinking.

What if I live in a non-bushfire affected area and my rainwater tastes of smoke? The smoke taint alone is unlikely to be a health concern. However, if you are concerned about the taste of your rainwater, use bottled water for drinking and continue to use your rainwater for other uses.

What do I do if there are dead animals in my drinking water system? Wear gloves to remove dead animals from your roof, your gutters, or in your tank. Dispose of gloves after use and disinfect your tank water before re-using it. Never enter a tank.

Water can be disinfected by bringing the water to a rolling boil, or by using chlorine.

To boil water for drinking purposes: bring water to a rolling boil by heating water till a continuous and rapid stream of air/ bubble is produced from the bottom of a pan or kettle. Kettles with automatic shut off switches are suitable. Caution should be taken to prevent scalding from boiled water. Allow to cool before use.

To disinfect your tank water using chlorine, use the following instructions.

For every 1,000 litres of water in your tank you can safely add:

* approximately 125 mL or 125 g of chlorine household bleach (4 per cent available chlorine), avoid bleaches that contain detergents or perfumes, or approximately 40 mL or 40 g of liquid pool chlorine (12.5 per cent available chlorine), or approximately 8 mL or 8 g of ranular pool chlorine/calcium hypochlorite (65 per cent available chlorine).

Note: one teaspoon is approximately five grams.

After chlorinating, wait at least 24 hours before using the water to allow time for microorganisms to be destroyed.

More information for local water carters or tank cleaners, contact the environmental health section of your local council For further information on fire retardants refer to EPA Victoria's Fire retardants and health publication 1721

Loch Sport Boat Club Link report 2020 Jan

Saturday morning sailing has begun for this season and is held regularly for our local kids and adults with Greg. Please check the program for dates. Not very many successful mornings yet but we try every month.

The Loch Sport School Water Safety and Emergency Services Day on Friday the 29th of November was very successful, the police boat came to visit as well as TV and newspaper people.

Thank you to the Loch Sport Lions Club as Sponsors of this day and all the emergency service people who provided activities for the school children. Also Vanessa from Marine Safety Victoria who held the water safety sessions.

Our newest event, the Vice Commodores cup race, followed on Saturday the 30th November with a few cats coming to grief before the start the race did not really happen.

The Shesails women and girls into sailing day was held on the 28th of December followed by the high tea 3pm in the afternoon. 32 ladies and girls enjoyed a great day on the water and a yummy afternoon tea.

The Childrens disco on the following evening 29th welcomed 42 children to fun and games to music.

A Discover sailing day was held again on the 2nd of January for anyone wanting to try sailing followed by a sausage sizzle. Very well attended, lack of wind for some made for easy/boring sailing.

The Level 1 discover sailing course the first weekend of January 4 and 5 was postponed due to the advertised weather predictions, not wanting to bring people to the town unnecessarily, this course has been rescheduled on January 25 and 26. Some members may take off on a cruise weather permitting.

The club was open New Years Eve with no fireworks to watch we still had people drop in for the evening of music and chat.

2020 - The club will be hosting titles for the Hartley association 18/21 championships 15 and 16 February and the Mosquito Nacra Arrow Catamaran State titles March 7 and 8 with dinners on the Saturday nights.

The Club has started to upgrade the weathercam with help from a Community assistance grant from Wellington Shire. The new camera has arrived, installed and displayed online with the old camera image note the difference 10 years can make.

Volume 23 - Issue 1 - Page 35 LOCH SPORT PRIMARY SCHOOL

We have so many opportunities to learn at Loch sport primary school. Our Chinese teacher lives in Beijing, we videoconference with her once a week. We run science lessons linking up with 3 other cluster schools to share ideas and experiences. We have a music teacher come in and teach us ukulele, bass Ukulele, banjo-lele and of course drumming, we have gone into town to do swimming and gymnastics, we have participated in excursions at The Heart Morass with the Bug Blitz team, we’ve been to the gallery to check out local and international artists and experimented making our own art. We have travelled to the Morwell Technical School to learn to use our laser cutter and associated software and have been invited to participate in local events such as Remembrance Day and the carols. At Loch Sport Primary School, we make sure that we’re not missing out on any experiences, being so far away from Sale. We utilise technology when ever we can and make sure we have hands-on experiences.

This year we’ve been concentrating on writing and it’s being exciting to watch the children develop their skills in the writing process. While trying to write this article for the link, reminded me how much we expect of our students and how important it is to give them a thorough grounding so they know they can succeed when they want to try things.

At our end of year Celebration of Learning we will be showcasing our writing that we did for the Herald Sun short story writing competition. The students developed a piece of writing from the planning stage through to publication and some have even illustrated their stories. I feel privileged being able to work with the students one-on-one to hone their writing process. Using their writer’s notebook, students gather ideas, interesting words, catchy openers, character development and illustration ideas then workshop these bare bones, with staff or other students, into more developed pieces of writing.

We make sure that we don’t forget about the basics, explicitly taught phonics; learning the “codes” that make up all English words, learning the rules, acknowledging exceptions and putting these to work when we write. We concentrate on automatic recall of maths facts; “friends of ten”, multiplication tables, doubles and near doubles and developing tools that we can apply to problem solve everyday problems. We make sure we have time to chat about what’s going on in the children’s lives/minds, to learn about being good friends, learn about resilience; having another go and getting back on the bike and trying again.

I was reading last years’ article where I wrote about Ride to School month and how impressed I was with the students. We participated again this year and I was just as impressed with our students. Since the start of October 2019, we have had two students get off their training wheels and ride their two-wheeler all the way from school to the Marina. The determination in their eyes was remarkable, their ability to get up after face planting many, many times was so extraordinary (funny and extraordinary). Seeing children make goals to get up the hills and reach those goals and make new ones, learn how to be considered on the road, keeping to the left and giving way and making sure that we are watching out for others.

Last year we also had some sponsorship from Smiling Minds to develop our mindfulness curriculum. Mindfulness gives our children the skills to be able to concentrate on a task when there is so much going on around them. It gives them the skills to be able to identify their feelings, acknowledge them and apply really good ways of dealing with them. In this busy 21st-century, with our kids being bombarded with so much information, it is important to make time and learn how to stop, and just be in the moment.

We also encourage our students to be creators, rather than just consumers. We have been really lucky receiving grants from Esso to help develop our Maker Space with a laser cutter and (soon to be delivered) 3D printer, not to mention glitter, glue, paint, wool, paper and card. Some students also had some Art Work on display in the Gippsland Art Gallery during the Christmas period.

I finished off my 3rd year at Loch Sport Primary School and feel a lot like a 3rd year apprentice, I know lots of stuff but still make those rooky errors. I’m looking forward to the start of the 2020 school year, 3 new preps (if you know of any more… let us know!), no grade 6’s going out and a bunch of kids who are caring, gutsy, forgiving and hopefully winners of the Cluster Cross Country, Swimming and Athletics competitions.

Thanks to the Loch Sport Community for supporting us and offering opportunities where we can grow and feel part of the community. We need to figure out ways to include some golf, lawn bowls, table tennis, sailing, and fishing. As well as “some good ol’ jetty jumping” into this year’s school calendar. Enjoy Loch Sport, it’s a great place to learn and teach!

Due to a high level of interest, we will be organising another Boat/PWC licence course in the near future – available dates are limited but will be before mid-February at the latest. Gippsland Boat Training will be running the course so keep an eye on the LSFA Facebook page for details or drop an email to the Secretary at [email protected] and we will send you the course details once confirmed. The “Braggin’ Board” is open again on which to register your Most Memorable Catch for the year ahead. Already there have been some significant catches recorded, including a 14.5 foot Bronze Whaler. The prize is $500 worth of tackle and bait generously supplied by one of our sponsors, Loch Sport Foodworks - the “Braggin’ Board” is located outside Foodworks, so keep those entries coming. The recent club fishing weekend at Port Welshpool was a great success – over 40 members, sponsors and guests enjoyed some very good fishing and some excellent social time. The accommodation and facilities at the Long Jetty Caravan Park were outstanding so write this event in your diaries for next year – the last weekend in November. On Sunday 29th December, we held the inaugural “Loch Sport Surf Fishing Classic” on the Ninety Mile Beach at Loch Sport. On a beautiful day for fishing, a large crowd of keen fishermen and their families turned out to enjoy a fantastic day on the beach – some really good fish were captured (most of them released) and prizes were awarded to the biggest fish overall, the biggest salmon, the biggest flathead and the “Most Memorable Effort”. We are very grateful to our sponsors for their support, especially Stratford Marine for sponsoring the major prize. This very successful event is well and truly now a permanent fixture in the LSFA Events Calendar for the years ahead. The next annual Kid’s Fishing Experience Day planned for Saturday 25th January has been postponed until the Easter Weekend, due mainly to the impacts of the current bushfire crisis. The Fireworks have also been postponed so we look forward to help making the Easter long weekend into a “Loch Sport Festival”. More details soon.

We are delighted to have recently welcomed our 100th Member/Sponsor – together, we now have nearly 300 people involved in the Association when spouses and the kids are counted. We are humbled by his amazing response and look forward to doing the things that will promote recreational fishing in Loch Sport and the surrounding area, and which will bring many benefits to the town. Ninety Mile Beach:

All along the 90 Mile Beach, plenty of fishermen have been hitting the beach enjoying generally good wind and ocean conditions with some good catches being reported. Almost no weed and only occasional drift to contend has made the fishing very enjoyable. Salmon are around and flathead are being caught in good numbers – also some really good gummy sharks. Those fishing beyond the outer sand bank using drones and kayaks have captured some heavy duty bronze whalers and gummies – fresh salmon fillets are doing the trick. The best baits for the other species continue to be pilchard, blue bait, squid and blue & silver poppers – the poppers are taking 50% of all fish caught.

Lakes & Rivers: A few more boats out over the festive season reporting some bream are being caught close to the river mouths or upstream, mainly on peeled prawns. Lots of mullet and garfish are on the move in the lakes and the dolphins are active all around the lakes chasing the large schools of bait fish. In the last few weeks, some excellent bream and flathead have been taken off the lake beach using soft and hard body lures. The next few months should provide some great land-based fishing along the lake front.

Offshore: With the improving and warmer weat2h9erD, EreCcEenMtBtrEipRs 2o0ff1sh9oIrNeAhUaGveUpRrAodLuFcIeSdHsINomGeCgOoModPbEaTgITsIoOfNsnapper, flathead and gummy shark, along with snook, gurnard and other reef fish. We expect to enjoy plenty of good fishing out from Lakes

LOCH SPORT ANGLING CLUB

Happy New Year to all our members and supporters.

The current situation with fires is very much front of mind and we give our condolences to all those who have lost loved ones or property.

In addition we feel for local businesses who have been affected by reduced tourists in town. I’m sure the town will make an extra effort to support them and the out of towners start to return.

As I write this, the club’s property at Benambra is safe but surrounded on three sides by fires. Let’s hope that the rains and winds are on our side for the next few months.

The LSAC finished off the year with a bang with a great attendance at our Xmas Party. A great day was had by all.

Also well supported were the ham raffles thanks to the Loch Sport Lakeview Bar & Bistro for their ongoing support.

With the fires affecting a number of our regular weekend spots, the agenda for trips away is currently a bit fluid but I will advise more as things settle.

Some members have reported good fishing on days when the heat ,wind or smoke allowed them to get out!

See you at our Friday raffles soon.

Cheers Justin Meyers, President
