President’s Report January 2011

Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season. As a Board, we are certainly looking forward to some of the exciting events and changes that are planned for 2011.

As you are no doubt aware, FEI National has introduced a new event registration system. In addition to some administrative benefits, we hope that you will find the new system quicker and easier to use than previous systems, and look forward to any feedback you may have.

Also on the Events front, we would like to remind all members that attendance at an event does come at a cost to the Chapter. Hence, if you have registered for an Event, and are no longer able to attend that Event, we respectively request that you cancel your event registration. This serves two purposes:

 Frees up space for another member who may be on the Waiting List to attend the particular event, should that event be Sold Out  Saves the Chapter money, as we must commit to certain attendance figures with hotels and various catering facilities prior to the event.

While we have explored implementing a Cancellation Fee, we would prefer NOT to introduce such a fee at this time. Instead, we ask for all members cooperation in adhering to these guidelines.

CANCELLATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED NO LATER THAN 72 HOURS BEFORE THE EVENT. TO CANCEL YOUR EVENT REGISTRATION, PLEASE CONTACT THE FEI NATIONAL OFFICE.

We appreciate your cooperation, and look forward to seeing everyone at our next event.

All the Best,

Brad Cruickshank Page 2

A Guide to Landing your Dream Job

The January 2011 issue of The Globe and Mail Report on Business Magazine has a lead arti- cle on “New Year’s Resolution: Get a Job at the most creative, funniest, sportiest, most inno- vative, classiest, friendliest, most glamorous, nimblest, savviest, best paying companies in Canada.”

The article features job opportunities at Barrick Gold, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, Google Canada, Sid Lee, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, Encana, Research in Motion, and Deloitte. For each company the article lists:

 What They Want;  What They Don’t Want;  Vibe;  Best Fit;  and a Warning.

It’s encouraging to note that six of the eight companies were looking for people in Finance and/or Accounting.

Happy New Year.

New Member Profile

Name: Daniel Gumprich; FEI member since 2010.

What is your current role: CFO of Sterling Shoes Inc. (formerly Sterling Shoes Income Fund), a TSX-listed busi- ness headquartered in and operating over 160 footwear retail locations across Canada under five distinct banners: Sterling, Joneve, Shoe Warehouse, Gia and Freedman Shoes.

How was the conversion process to a corporation from an Income Fund?: We converted from an income fund structure to a corporate structure on July 1, 2010. It required a huge amount of planning and work, in addition to my ongoing duties as CFO. We felt that the timing was right for us to convert, a strong team effort from my staff, Sterling’s directors, and our advisors involved with the pro- ject enabled a smooth transition.

What attracted you to FEI: I was familiar with the organization and knew a number of FEI members. After attending a few interesting sessions and meeting some intriguing people I decided to join. Of course, the great people that I know and met at FEI were probably the most significant factor in my decision.

What do you like about your job: The last two years have been very challenging at all lev- els in the retail sector and in our business. I’m excited about the opportunity to influence the shape of this organization and watch our plans unfold. I enjoyed the opportunity to guide this organization through those turbulent times.

What do you hope to achieve over the next five years: Balancing my professional achievements and time with my young family. I moved to BC from Saskatchewan many years ago on my own to ski, sail and find adventure. I now have three beautiful daughters (Natasha: 3, Quinn: 4 and Fiona: 7) and a wonderful wife (Barbara: 29*) with whom to continue those adventures. I look forward to sharing their lives as we all grow older.

What keeps you up at night: Nothing yet; but the fact that I have 3 daughters will undoubt- edly cause me some sleepless nights in the future.
