  • The Lindsey Stirling Effect
SECTION TITLE The Lindsey Stirling Effect Jeremy Grimshaw Mormon Celebrity, Mormon Normalcy, and the Dress We will get to the violin playing. First, let’s talk about the dress. On May 17, 2015, the Mormon blogosphere erupted into controversy over the designer gown worn by dancing violinist and YouTube star Lindsey Stirling to the Billboard Music Awards show, where she was to receive the Top Dance/Electronic Album honor. Much of her fan base was torn. Her charm, her quirky fiddle-prancing shtick, and her unapologetic LDS religiosity had made her one of the most eminently Facebookable Mormons in an era in which LDS members have been encouraged quite specifically over the pulpit to share their faith online. And yet there she was, posing for the press in a form-fitting dress with slinky black crisscross straps that framed far too many windowpanes of flesh. “You were a role model until you publicly shamed your religion,” one Instagram commenter lamented.1 Was Stirling flouting—or had she somehow missed—the continued ecclesiastical admonishment and consequent orthodox eagerness, now several years running, to cover the skin from shoulder to knee? On the other hand, some less conservative voices, many of which, I suspect, do not regularly ride on the same social media bandwagons as do Stirling’s fans, leapt to defend her autonomy over her own body and its public presentation and, explicitly or implicitly, enlist the incident in an ongoing critique of Mormon modesty culture’s obsession with surface and assumption of the “male gaze.”2 Stirling herself proposed an odd and logically limber defense: “The dress I wore to the awards was fully lined with tan fabric.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE [email protected] 573-201-4104 YouTube Star Peter Hollens Debuts “Quarantine Song” to Drive Donations to Combat COVID-19 #1 Billboard Charting Recording Artist and YouTube Sensation Creates New Musical Parody Using Hit Pop Tunes to Encourage Social Distancing; 100% of Proceeds Raised Will be Donated to No Kid Hungry’s Coronavirus Relief Fund (Los Angeles, CA—April 20, 2020) Peter Hollens, recording artist, American entrepreneur, educator, and classically-trained vocal artist most commonly known for his a cappella music videos on Youtube and Facebook, has debuted the QUARANTINE SONG today to encourage people to stay home to flatten the curve and beat COVID-19. The new song is a 100% charity-driven effort, with proceeds going to support millions of children who have lost healthy meals due to school closures nationwide. “We created this to bring levity and fun to a serious subject, but to also remind people that now is the time to think of others before ourselves. Staying home protects ourselves and our family but also our neighbors, friends and our global community,” said Hollens, who’s popular YouTube channel reaches nearly 3 million subscribers. “Thanks to all of my fellow influencers who are joining me in getting this video out into the world. We’re asking everyone to share this video to spread the word and hopefully slow down the spread of coronavirus.” The QUARANTINE SONG was kickstarted by the launch of Hollens’ latest video, which parodies global superstars, including Lady Gaga, Adele, Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, Dua Lipa and more with a special guest appearance by Tay Zonday parodying his song “Chocolate Rain” and Evynne Hollens in a singalong encouraging viewers to stay home and practice social distancing when going out.

  • Lindsey Stirling: Song by Song
Page | 1 LINDSEY STIRLING: SONG BY SONG CRYSTALIZE There’s no precedent for Lindsey Stirling’s success. She plays the violin. Her songs have no lyrics. A manager didn’t develop her image and a producer never nurtured her sound. Despite her grassroots entry into stardom, Lindsey can claim an international following and a powerful online presence that is the envy of other artists. In some ways, the music industry has both anticipated and dreaded the rise of an artist like Lindsey Stirling. And her success flies in the face of a business that all but ignored her attempts to break in. Lindsey’s story begins simply enough. She was born September 21st, 1986 in Santa Ana, California and spent her childhood in Gilbert, Arizona. Lindsey’s parents were avid fans of the arts and their children soon began to take on artistic interests of their own. But with a tight family budget, a fiveyearold Lindsey had to choose between two budding passions: dance and violin. Lindsey choose the violin, but did not let go of her dream to dance and decided to combine her two passions on own. It wasn’t easy. Yet even without formal training, the observant Stirling worked hard to become an accomplished dancer. In High School, Lindsey joined a rock band and wrote her first violin rock song. And an early performance of the song helped her win the title of Miss Arizona Junior title and earned her the Spirit Award at the national competition. After graduating high school, she moved to Provo, Utah to attend Brigham Young University to pursue a degree in recreational therapy.
