    Annex 6-SALFORD CITY COUNCIL Introduction to the area A6.1 The City of Salford is situated at the heart of the Greater Manchester conurbation, in the north-west region of England. The City is bordered by Manchester City to the west, Trafford Metropolitan Borough to the south, Wigan Borough and Warrington to the east and Bolton Metropolitan Borough and Bury Metropolitan Borough to the North. A6.2 Salford is predominantly an urban area. The main industrial complexes in the City include the Northbank Industrial Estate, Clifton and Walkden Industrial Estate. A6.3 Although large areas of the City are residential there are also substantial green spaces including the Moss Land at Irlam and Cadishead, Botany Bay Woods at Worsley and the Lower Irwell Valley. The Manchester Ship Canal runs along the Southern border of the City and the Bridgewater Canal runs through the West of the City. A6.4 There are four town shopping and commercial centres at Salford, Eccles, Walkden and Swinton and numerous subsidiary centres. A6.5 Salford is at the hub of the transport network, with the M602, M60, M61 and M62 motorways all within the City boundaries. There are excellent road, rail and air links, and the Metrolink tram system now extends to Eccles and Salford Quays from Manchester City centre. Summary of review and assessment results A6.6 The review and assessment of air quality in Salford was completed in December 2000 and identified areas within the City that were likely to exceed the national air quality objectives in 2004 and 2005. A6.7 After an extensive local consultation exercise the Council decided to declare an Air Quality Management Area in June 2001.

    Page | 1 LIBERAL/LIBERAL DEMOCRAT CANDIDATES IN THE NORTH WEST REGION 1945-2015 Constituencies in the counties of Cheshire, Cumbria and Lancashire INCLUDING SDP CANDIDATES in the GENERAL ELECTIONS of 1983 and 1987 PREFACE The North West Region was a barren area for the Liberal/Liberal Democratic Party for decades with a higher than average number of constituencies left unfought after the 1920s in many cases. After a brief revival in 1950, in common with most regions in the UK, when the party widened the front considerably, there ensued a further bleak period until the 1970s. In 1983-87, as with other regions, approximately half the constituencies were fought by the SDP as partners in the Alliance. 30 or more candidates listed have fought elections in constituencies in other regions, one in as many as five. Cross-checking of these individuals has taken time but otherwise the compilation of this regional Index has been relatively straight forward compared with others. Special note has been made of the commendable achievements of ‘pioneer’ candidates who courageously carried the fight into the vast swathe of Labour-held constituencies across the industrial zone of the region beginning in the 1970s. The North West Region has produced its fair share of personalities who have flourished in fields outside parliamentary politics. Particularly notable are the candidates, some of whom were briefly MPs, whose long careers began just after World War I and who remained active as candidates until after World War II. (Note; there were four two-member constituencies in Lancashire, and one in Cheshire, at the 1945 General Election, denoted ‘n’ after the date.

Conlan Atmospheric Research and Information Centre, Department of Environmental and Geographical Sciences, Manchester Metropolitan University, CVtesfer ABSTRACT The Greater Manchester region was the cradle of the Industrial Revolution and air pollution has been an inescapable consequence of industrial activity since the latter half of the 18th Century. Within the context of a historical perspective, the scale and nature of air pollution problems will be reviewed; trends in available data reported; major sources identified and effects upon humans; vegetation; buildings and other sensitive receptors considered. Air quality has improved and the changing nature of sources and pollutant mix is reported. INTRODUCTION The county of Greater Manchester covers some 1 300 square kilometres of north west England, mostly draining into the catchment of the river Mersey. Hills forming the boundary of the Mersey catchment lie to the north, east, south east and north west. Altitude varies from c.SOm a.s.l. in the west to more than 300m in the north east of the conurbation. The regional climate is affected by the Welsh Mountains which shelter it from moist south westerly winds. Hence the relatively dry nature of the area and low rainfall considering its proximity to the west coast [1]. Micro- climatological variation within the conurbation is related to altitude, topography, degree of industrialisation and distance from the sea. There is spatial variation in absolute rainfall amount [2] but this is not statistically significant.
