Autopistas, the Spanish subsidiary of the Abertis Group, introduced today a free device designed to facilitate the mobility of entry and exit of the tolls of , Sud, Girona Oest, Girona Nord and Vilademuls of the AP-7 toll road. This innovative measure, named Ron- daGI, will prevent that drivers of cars travelling daily in this free stretch of toll road must stop at the tolls.

RondaGI is a device that drivers stick inside their windscreen just behind the rearview mirror. When the antenna at the toll gate detects it, the barrier opens to let the vehicle to go through. Users will have a special lane identified with the RondaGI sign. Drivers that have Via T do not need this device as they will continue to use the lane set aside for Via T.

Starting on 6 March and over the following three weeks Autopistas would hand out 200,000 free RondaGI devices and a leaflet to drivers on the free stretch of the AP-7 between Fornells and Vilademuls. Users could ask for the device at the Girona North and Girona South tolls, at Girona, Salt, , Sarrià de Ter, Sant Julià de Ramis, Cervià de Ter, Vilademuls, Fornells de la Selva, and town halls and at Girona District Council while stocks last.

In addition, customers who get this device and register on the Autopistas website will have additional advantages and free information to plan their trips on toll roads while at the same time helping us to continue working to improve the service.

“This project is a commitment to innovation,” said Anna Bonet, Deputy Director at Autopistas. “However, most of all it is an extra service to our customers with a key objective that is part of our DNA; ensuring a smoothly and safely traffic.”

Traffic volume

Every day about 18,000 vehicles exit the AP-7 through the tolls on the Ronda Girona, and the 80% of them travel within the free section, and of these around 60% do not have a VIA-T device. Consequently it is estimated that about 11,000 vehicles would travel daily on the toll- free Girona section with the RondaGI device.

The volume of traffic on the toll road’s free section between Fornells and Vilademuls has gone up by 20% since 2014. Between 2007 and 2016 the Girona West, Fornells and Vilademuls junc- tions were added to the Ronda Girona and this has added to the number of vehicles using it.
