2016 Archaeological Investigations Along Leyden Street Plymouth, MA

If traces of the original village survived anywhere in town, they had a good chance of surviving on Leyden Street. Not only was it the first street laid out, but after the colony began selling and allotting lands for individual ownership, much of the south side and a portion of the north, came into the hands of James Cole in 1637, and as far as is known, nothing was built on those lots after the first houses were constructed in the 1620s. Cole held the land, not using any of it, except the lot on which one of the first houses stood west of 17 Leyden Street that he converted to an ordinary. Upon his death it passed to his son, and then in the 18 th century many of the houses that stand on Leyden Street today were constructed on land that had not seen any building since the first comers set to work. As a result, many of these lot should, theoretically, contain Native occupation, followed by early 17 th century occupation, followed by 18 th century occupation and that's it.

The yards that exist today may have been more or less as they were when the 18 th century houses were first constructed, meaning that, in theory, all one would have to do was dig in an open area and you would be digging through 19 th , then 18 th , then 17 th century occupation. But, there have been utilities installed since the 19 th century, driveways and roadways built, torn up, and replaced, fences, barns, outhouses, sheds and all sorts of other constructions in the yards, not to mention potential filling, grading, and removal of whole soil surfaces. There was a slim chance that something could have escaped destruction, and finding it would be limited to the open, grassy, or unpaved areas that could be tested, the depth limits of 50 cm-square test pits vs arm and upper body length, and the kindness of property owners who would not mind holes being dug and subsequently refilled on their properties. In 2016 we received permission from property owners at 17, 18 and 25 Leyden Street to carry out excavations (Figure 1) . The 1887 map and the 1889 lithograph shows all the yards as open areas, with the exception of 17 Leyden St., which appears to have a barn located at the southeast corner (Figure 2).

17 Leyden Street This parcel was first occupied in 1620/1621 when someone, maybe John Goodman, maybe Peter Brown, maybe someone else that history has failed to record, probably built a house and had a garden plot on it (Figure 3) . The house and gardens were probably located at the north end of the lot, in the approximate location where the extant house stands today. That house is 50' long north to south, so, in theory, it covers the whole area of the house and garden. But what was beyond the garden fence that so prettilly enclosed the yards (as De Rasssiere in 1627 reported)? Was it the palisade? Was it an open, maybe communal area like at today? What I hoped that we could accomplish by excavating at this site was to see what was out there an whether anything was out there after almost 400 years.

At some point before January of 1637, all the land on the south side of this street, from the corner of Market Street to the westerly line of the lot on which the gambrel roof house with a brick end stands, was in the possession of James Cole. On the 2d of January, 1637, seven acres of land were

4 Report on the 2016 Investigations Along Leyden St., Plymouth, MA January 2017 granted to him by the Court, "to belong to his dwelling-house," and those acres probably included the Leyden Street land. His house stood precisely on the site that was occupied by the house of Ephraim T. Paty in the late 19 th century, just west of 17 Leyden Street. He then kept an ordinary, for which he was licensed in 1645. The records fail to show how he came into the possession of the house but it is possible that he bought it of Edward or Josiah Winslow, who was perhaps its earlier occupant, or it belonged to the colony and was granted to him. Judge Sewall says in his diary, under date of March 8, 1698, "Get to Plimoth about noon, I lodge at Cole's, the house was built by Governor Winslow, and is the oldest in Plymouth." James Cole sold in 1688, to his son John, all that part of the land west of 17 Leyden Street. Another interesting possibility is that the building that became Cole's ordinary was originally Francis Eaton's, Eaton living where John Goodman was reported to have had his house. Goodman disappears from the Colony records after the 1623 land division. On 8 January 1632/3 Francis Eaton acknowledgeth that he hath sold to Kanelm & Josias Wynslow the now dwelling house of the said Francis for £26 ( Records Vol. 1: 8). Josiah Winslow was later Governor of the Colony (1673-1680), so when Sewall says it was Governor Winslow's house, he was probably referring to Josiah and not Edward Winslow. Josiah and Kenelm moved to Marshfield by the early 1640s, and it is possible that an unrecorded or lost deed recorded that they sold the house to Cole. Saying that it was the Governor's house would be a good advertising/ bragging point for Cole, so even if the Governor only lived there a short time (or even not at all, maybe he just owned it) Cole could still say that he owned it. This sort of stretching/ exaggeration/ overemphasis of the facts still occurs in some historic house museums around the former Plymouth Colony today. The lot east of Cole's house, the 17 Leyden Street lot, eventually came into the possession of Mercy, a daughter of Nathaniel Goodwin, who married John Read, Jr., of Boston, and who conveyed it in 1788 to Rev. Chandler Robbins. Chandler built the house that now stands on the site before his death in 1799. In 1801 and 1803 it was conveyed by several deeds by the heirs of Mr. Robbins to James Bartlett, who lived in it until he died, in 1840. Colonel Leander Lovell, who married Mr. Bartlett's daughter, became its subsequent owner and occupant, and it was sold in 1880 by his heirs to its late 19 th century owner, James M. Atwood. The first test pit at 17 Leyden Street was located seven meters south of the southwest corner of 17 Leyden St. on the west side of the lot adjacent to the retaining wall (Figure 3) . This test pit encountered nothing but coarse sand fill that must be relatively recent in date and be associated with the construction of the adjacent retaining wall (Figure 4) . No artifacts were found in the fill.

Test pit 2 was placed at the east side of the property, directly opposite Unit 1 eight meters south of the southwest corner of 19 Leyden St. and 50 cm west of property line (Figure 3) . This unit encountered fill layers to 70 cmbs, at which point a dark loamy sand horizon, probably a buried A horizon, was found. A large quantity of redware was recovered directly at the junction between the possible buried A and the overlying fill. This redware, combined with the quantities of creamware, indicate that the fill was added in the late 18 th century, probably when the house was built by Rev. Chandler Robbins in 1788. This means that everything from 70 cm to the bottom of the unit predated that construction and reflected material deposited before this date. This unit ended at 100 cm due to the excessive depth and difficulty of excavation (Figure 4) . The soils at 100 cm appeared to represent an earlier possible fill that could date to the 17 th century, although no artifacts were recovered from it.

Creamware (1762-1820) and pearlware (1780-1830) were recovered from the 70-80 cm below surface level, giving a late 18 th to early 19 th century date for this possible buried ground surface. No

6 Report on the 2016 Investigations Along Leyden St., Plymouth, MA January 2017 machine cut nails (post 1820) were recovered, so this puts it in to a ca. 1762-1800 date range, most probably around the 1788 date of construction for the extant house. Below 80 cm, only redware and hand wrought nails were recovered, possibly representing either traces of earlier, possibly Cole's ordinary occupation level or destruction of an earlier building, or the very earliest construction of the present house. While Cole's ordinary stood to the west of this lot, this lot was also owned by Cole and ordinaries would have barns, stables, a brewhouse, privies, and other outbuildings associated with them that may have been located on this lot.

This area should be further investigated.

18 Leyden Street The house at 18 Leyden Street was the parsonage house, believed by William Davis, to have been built for Rev. Chandler Robbins in 1760. The land on which it stands originally was part of SamuelFuller's grant. The bounds of that grant extended from Leyden to Middle Streets and from the alley between this and 16 Leyden Street approximately 85' to the east. In 1664, 's wife Bridget and his son Samuel joined in a gift to the church of Plymouth, for the use of a minister, of a certain "garden plat," being a half-acre, more or less (Figure 5) . The first parsonage house is believed to have stood east of the second parsonage, the one built for Robbins in 1760, according to Russell (1855). It was occupied by the Rev. John Cotton, pastor of the first church. The lot appears to have been purchased by the town from an unknown party (or was town land) in the 1660s and a parsonage house was built on it between 1663 and 1667, not being finished when Cotton came to Plymouth in that year. Cotton's parsonage is believed to have stood at the southeast corner of this lot (Figure 5).

The lot to the immediate west where 18 Leyden Street is located, was given on March 1, 1664, to the first church, by the widow Mrs. Bridget Fuller and her son Samuel. This lot also measured approximately ½ acre in size and the original Fuller house remained on it until at least the early 1680s. In 1680 the town voted to grant the parsonage lot to Rev. Cotton but it retained the original Fuller lot. It is not yet known who the lot was eventually sold to, although it is likely that it remained in the town's possession when a new parsonage in 1760.

One unit was excavated in the grassy lawn located between the house at 18 Leyden Street and the neighboring driveway to the east (Figure 6) . The lawn appears intact on the 1889 map of the property and doesn't appear to have ever been developed after the building of the Robbins parsonage in 1760. Excavation of this unit revealed 19 th century fill layers to a depth of 30 cm, below which a layer of fill with a heavy concentration of gravel and cobbles was found to extend to the intact subsoil, which was encountered at a depth of 80 cmbs (Figure 7) . A possible trench feature was found running north to south in the floor of the unit at 83 cm. It was found to continue to at least 100 cmbs but it was not determinable to what period it dated. It is possible that it could be a timber sill trench for the 17 th century Fuller house.

The layers from 0-45 cmbs yielded whiteware (post 1820) to 30 cm and creamware (1762-1820) to 45 cm. From 45-100 cmbs the majority of the artifacts were architectural in nature (brick, window glass, hand-wrought nails, and mortar) possibly relating to the construction of the parsonage in 1760. The trench feature was found to only contain brick, charcoal and clay mortar nothing that was really datable but which hints at the possibility that it is earlier than the parsonage.

This area should be further investigated.

25 Leyden Street The house at 25 Leyden Street was purchased by John Dyer sometime around 1698 at the same time that he bought the lot to the east where the Colony's common house stood. It was conveyed by John Dyer in 1739 to Gershom Holmes, who built a part of the house now standing, and sold it in 1741 to Thomas Mayhew. The rear part of the lot, Hannah Dyer, widow of John Dyer, sold in 1742 to Thomas Mayhew, making him the owner of the whole estate. In 1775 Mr. Mayhew sold it to Alexander Champion and Thomas Dickson of London, who sold it by their attorney, Nathaniel Goodwin, in 1785 to William Harlow. It was bought of William Harlow in 1800 by Robert Roberts, of whose estate it was purchased by his sister, Mrs. John Clark, whose daughter owned and occupied it in the late 19 th century.

The southern portion of this lot consists of a two-tiered terraced yard leading down to Brewster Gardens. The first tier lies approximately 10' below the first floor of the house while the second tier of the terrace is approximately 40 cm lower (Figures 8 and 9) . Test unit 1 was placed on the northern or upper tier while Unit 2 was placed on the lower, southern, tier. Both units encountered lawn dressing followed by coarse sand fill. This fill overlaid a deep, dark colored sandy loam fill containing abundance 19 th century domestic artifacts. Both units were excavated to a depth of 100 cmbs without ever reaching a natural, non fill layer. Both units yielded 18 th and 19 th century material down to the lowest level indicating mixed fill (Figure 8) . What is not known is whether this is material that was deposited over time into the backyard after the house was built in the 1740s or whether it represent a concerted effort at filling the north bank of Town Brook in order to create more backyard in the 19 th century, in which case the fill may have come from somewhere else. It would be advantageous to excavate a unit as deeply as possible in order to locate the original ground surface and determine the original degree of ground slope present here,

11 Report on the 2016 Investigations Along Leyden St., Plymouth, MA January 2017 although, seeing how it is almost 100 feet south of Leyden Street, the testing area is probably outside of the original settlement. Further investigation could be carried out here, but it is of secondary priority. Artifacts A total of 1445 artifacts were recovered from the three lots that were tested with the majority (n=670/ 46.4%) coming from the deep deposits at 25 Leyden Street. 17 Leyden Street yielded the second highest count (n=568) but, many of those pieces came from a single well-shattered storage pot resting on the surface of the buried ground surface in Unit 2. Overall, the majority of the artifacts were recovered from 25 Leyden Street (Table 1) , testing at this site also yielded the widest variety of material. Table 1. Prehistoric artifacts, basically the refuse from making stone tools at some time in the community of Pawtucxet, were recovered from all locations in relatively low quantities (Figure 10) . The recovery of even a few pieces basically anywhere we dug in Plymouth highlights how large and sustained the Native community must have been- you can't dig anywhere in downtown Plymouth without finding some trace of the Native presence. The recovery of Native material also shows that if extensive 17 th century occupation was present at any of the tested sites, some trace of it should be encountered, just as some trace of th earlier Native occupation was found, even if it had been mixed with later material. Some of the artifact classes are not readily datable such as brick fragments or redware, but others, such as specific types of ceramics produced for a limited range of time (unlike redware which was being produced before the Pilgrims came over, right up until the middle 19 th century when it was replaced by cheaper refined earthenwares and stonewares[but which survived as flowerpots that are still made today]). Distribution of datable material shows that the material from 25 Leyden Street represents a mixed deposit of several eras, possibly the result of the bringing fill into this area in the 19 th century to fill in the north side of Town Brook and increase the size of people's back yards. The material from 17 Leyden Street present a different picture, being more limited in date range, mostly the late 18 th to very early 19 th century, with a lot of hand wrought nails that indicate a building may have been torn down around the same time that the present building was built in 1788. Some of the more notable artifacts included several pieces of copper wheel etched drinking glass and a single piece of etched wine bottle glass. These all probably date to the late 18 th to early 19 th century, the period when this decorative technique was most popular. Also recovered were pieces of flint that may have been used as firestarting strikers; a lead seal that may have been affixed by a merchant to goods being shipped from Plymouth; a wine glass base dating to the first half of the 18 th century; and bones from cattle, swine, striped bass, and chickens. Examples of these and other artifacts are presented in Figures 11, 12, and 13.

15 Report on the 2016 Investigations Along Leyden St., Plymouth, MA January 2017

Conclusions and Recommendations The limited testing that was carried out in 2016- five 50-cm-square test pits- determined that extensive episodes of earthmoving and filling have occurred along Leyden Street since at least the 18 th century. Testing found abundant evidence of 18 th to 19 th century refuse disposal followed by moderate evidence of Native American artifacts and finally little 17 th century material. The dearth of 17 th century material is probably the result of two factors- the relatively limited occupation that occurred along Leyden Street in the period-1621-1627 for the most intense occupation followed by a rapid dispersal from the town to private farms located to the north and south of the original settlement and the ownership of large pieces of land along Leyden Street by one family, the Coles, until the very late 17 th century. These two factors have resulted in very little artifactual material probably being deposited in this area until the turn of the 18 th century.

With that being said, the limited testing did yield several areas that should be further investigated.

-At 17 Leyden Street, it is proposed that a 50 cm wide trench be excavated along the southern edge of the property. The goal of this trench will be to fully expose the possible buried ground surface identified at 70 cmbs and to examine the original ground slope that was present on the souther side of the original plantation. A secondary goal is to evaluate the possibility that some trace of the original palisade may be present in this lot.

-At 18 Leyden Street, a larger unit is proposed to be excavated in the grassy lawn where the first unit was excavated. The purpose of this unit will be to determine the nature of the fill present here and to investigate the possible feature encountered at approximately 80 cmbs in the original unit.

-At 25 Leyden Street, it is proposed that a single 1 x 1 m square unit be excavated as deep as is safely possible in order to try to get to the original 17 th century ground surface. Once the maximum depth is reached, which is expected to be approximately 150 cm, if the original ground surface has still not been reached, it is proposed that a single 50 cm square test pit be excavated as deep as possible, possibly another 100 cm deep.

It is expected that the proposed work could be accomplished in a one to two week time frame in the spring to summer of 2017.
