Formed in 2009 and launched in 2010 Fishing For Forces is exactly what it states. The Anglers of the UK wanted to show their appreciation to those that have suffered trauma or been physically wounded in recent conflicts, but also those that are still serving their country, and veterans of all conflicts back to WWII. What Fishing For Forces do

Founder Bill Howell took the time to tell Sport in Profile Magazine more about the good work that they have been doing, saying, “We organise group events of up to twenty HMAF (Army, Navy, RAF) guests with an equal number of angler/mentors to pass on our angling skills as well as introduce the extremely therapeutic effect that a day at the waterside can have.

We recently took 60 guests from 150 Provost Company from Catterick Garrison trout fishing over three separate days (20 per day) and the results were excellent and are on the video on our website. There are also a large number of single one to one superb fishing outings totally free of charge donated through the UK by individual anglers, clubs and the owners of fishing on the “Fishing Available page” on our website www.fishingforforces.org

8 ISSUE 04 FISHING FOR FORCES

We considered 2013 a good year with group events and individual trips of Coarse, Trout, Salmon and Sea/Beach fishing being held nationwide. However 2014 has been an exceptional year with thirty group events being held to date with 500 of HMAF guests to the waterside as well as many individual outings.

For those that have suffered wounds of all kinds (and we are aware all wounds do not show), we organise events to cater for them, with angler/ instructors qualified in this respect and modified tackle. We also have groups of veterans one may join that have started their own angling clubs supported by FFF and we supply a lot of the tackle and fishing required.

This coming year we are aiming to open more “Fishing Schools” at many of the 15 PRU/C centres nationwide. The Tedworth House PRC Fishing School opened in June 2012 is a stunning success with unstinting support of the staff and local anglers and FFF supplying complete sets of tackle for game, coarse and sea fishing, (ten for each discipline).

The list of veterans suffering from PTSD and other related trauma symptoms that will last a lifetime is

We have great links with all the local schools. I would say the majority of our players are local although we do also have some players that travel up to an hour to come to us too!

Sophie Hankin, Georgia Lees, Michelle Drayne, Rose Morgan- Smith, Lindsay Keable, Mikki Austin. Any of these girls could be invited to represent England. Lindsay Keable is in the England squad & we are very proud of her.” Challenges/Ambitions “I think the biggest challenge for any club is making sure you have enough and the right calibre of coaches. We do try to keep our membership fees as low as possible to enable everyone to participate but this does have a knock on effect for our coaches who only get a minimal fee to cover expenses. This sometimes makes it hard to attract new personnel especially if they have not been a previous member of the club wishing to give something back.

The clubs ambitions in the next five years is for the Premier Team to win Division 1 again, a few years back we did win it for about 7 years consecutively so it would be nice to be back at the top again. We are close this year so fingers crossed! We also have great ambitions for our junior section and would love for them to reach the National finals which we haven't done for a few years.”

Warsash Wasps SFC is a club built around player development and enjoyment and do a terrific job in this regard. Club Chairman Mike Ashley took the time to tell us more about the good work that they have been doing.

He said, “I first got involved about 14 years ago as both my sons played at the Club. Some of the most rewarding parts of the role include the smile on a 6 years old face when he turns up to Development squad on a cold, wet Saturday morning and having his Mum tell me it is the only morning of the week she does not struggle to get him/her out of bed, seeing 15 year old lads, who have been with the club since they were 5, help with coaching younger players and the feeling of pride when people like Matt LeTissier and Steve Claridge praise the Club facilities and especially the main grass pitch.” Atmosphere “We always try to stay positive, optimistic and proud of our facilities. We have a long lease on our main Headquarters where we have an 11 a side pitch which is the best non-professional surface in the County, a 3G training pitch, inside training area, refreshment bar and meeting room.

We are 75% of the way through a project to build a new changing room block, with refs room, and a large teaching room upstairs which we hope to rent out to the FA for training courses and utilise for our own needs on education within the club. We are lucky to have someone who is qualified to run Level 1 courses here.”

16 ISSUE 04 WARSASH WASPS FC

Youth “We are a Youth Football Club first of all; the Adult sections have only been added in the last 5 years as players at Youth level have wanted to carry on playing as Warsash Wasps. In the past the Club stopped playing at Under 15 but after a change in policy we have kept sides at Under 16, 18 and Adult football.

But Youth rules to the extent that the Adult men’s teams play at the local recreation ground and not at our headquarters. The reason being that the Club was founded to provide football for local children, that is still the aim but with the add-on that we will provide the best facilities we can for them to grow their game at their own pace without the result coming into the equation.

The aim is to develop young players so that they all reach their full potential and it is that aim which all the club’s coaches work towards. Like all clubs we have players who disappear off to academies etc. but to be honest, the club is about ordinary children playing and, more importantly, enjoying football. If we have success so be it but that has never been, or will be, our objective.”

Community “We are a Chartered Standard Community Development Club and take the community part very seriously. Virtually all of our players live within 2 miles of our New Road ground and many of our younger players play for the Club because their parents did.

We run a Saturday morning Development squad for up to Under 7’s, where up to 60 children attend and their parents are encouraged to stay and watch as the Club’s coaches( all Level One or above) work with their children. The 3G pitch is available for local schools to use during the week with at least one primary school using it for training and matches. It is also used by a 5 a side league on a Sunday night with many of the men playing coming from the local area and also having children at the Club.

At the end of each season we run 6 a side tournaments from Under 8 to Under 13 over 2 weekends with the tasks such as parking, BBQ, selling programmes and Refreshments being performed by parents from each squad. We actively encourage parents to get involved in running their child’s squad from U8 upwards, paying for all courses they attend and running Emergency aid training on our own premises.” Ambitions “The major task facing the Club over the next 5 years is to find more volunteers to help with the practical things like grass cutting, pitch marking and also volunteers to run sides. We are a football club run by volunteers; we aim to break even financially every year. We are not a coaching school, run for profit, where parents can leave their children, we need the parents to actively get involved with the Club.

The other issue as mentioned earlier is to provide extra grass pitches so we can meet demand, of course that then goes hand in hand with having enough time for them all to train. I suppose we do not have any major ambitions other than providing local people with the facilities to play football in a good, safe environment.”

Pass! Shoot! Score! Most children welcome the chance to have fun and let off steam during an activity. Football encourages children of all genders and backgrounds to participate in such an activity, whilst promoting important life skills such as physical health, teamwork, communication, leadership and self esteem. Hopkins Recycling Ltd., who manage Hampshire’s 26 Household Recycling Ltd Waste Recycling Centres, have always keenly supported such interests as an opportunity to build relationships with the local community. As Warsash Wasps SFC is one of the largest community football clubs in Hampshire, is local to our Head Office, and has inspired one of our own children and his friends to play, Delivering operational it seemed the perfect choice for our sponsorship. Outfield player, Oliver Covell has been selected for the Talent ID programme at Southampton Diving Academy. Kevin Hopkins, the M.D. of Hopkins Recycling says ‘I have great memories of playing football as a child and the hours of fun and friendships built. I also learnt valuable life skills whilst playing, such as how to win, lose, stay determined in challenging times and communicate with different people. Personal and business success often depends on the ability to build strong relationships and stay focused on goals. Undoubtedly the highlight of last season was their performance in the Lincolnshire FA Senior Trophy as they made it to the final before going down on penalties against Stamford after a thrilling 3-3 draw.

As they approach the half way mark in the current campaign their form has again been a little disappointing. They have put together a league record of having won 3, drawn 1 and lost 15 of their first 19 matches which has left them 2nd from bottom in the league.

Playing their home games at Caedelyn Park in , Rhiwbina RFC currently compete in Division 1 East of the SWALEC Leagues. They are led by Chairman Paul Maddocks who is supported by Secretary Steve Juniper and the team has made a considerable amount of progress under their guidance, having been promoted as Champions last time around.

They have wasted no time establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with this time around either, having won their first 8 league matches. This sees them sitting top of the table with 36 points on the board.

If they can keep up their recent level of performance then they will be amongst the title challengers when the season reaches the business end. There is a real confidence among the players that they have the ability to claim their second title in as many years. Rhiwbina is not a club to focus solely upon their senior section however and they also have a thriving youth set up. This part of the club looks to provide youngsters from the local area with an opportunity to play the game in a safe and enjoyable environment whilst helping them to reach their full potential.

It is important for any side to be able to produce their own talent, particularly in the current financial climate and this is an area that they appear to have covered. It will certainly be exciting to see how their juniors can progress over the coming years.

In order to help these players to make the sometimes difficult transition into the senior game they also have a number of additional sides in place. This allows them to gain experience of adult level rugby even if they are not yet considered ready for first team action which can be an important step in the development process.

Another benefit of having extra sides is that it allows the first XV to benefit from far greater strength in depth. If they are ever left short on numbers through injury or work commitments they have the option of calling players up with a limited amount of disruption.

Rhiwbina’s scintillating start to the season is a reflection of all of the hard work that is put into the club behind the scenes. It is this extraordinary level of commitment that should enable the club to achieve plenty more success over the coming years and Sport in Profile Magazine would like to wish them the best of luck.

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) is the regulatory authority for horse racing in Great Britain. It was first established on 31st July 2007 following a merger between the British Horseracing Board (BHB) and the Horseracing Regulatory Authority (HRA).

Its stated objectives are to, “provide the most compelling and attractive racing in the world; be seen as the world leader in raceday regulation; ensure the highest standards for the sport and participants, on and away from the racecourse; promote the best for the racehorse; and represent and promote the sport and the industry.”

One of the key areas they are responsible for is the development, co-ordination and maintenance of programmes of recruitment, retention, training and education within the horseracing industry. They work closely with stakeholders in four key areas which are Vocational Training, Careers Marketing, Jockey Training and Community Engagement.

Moving Forwards They recently confirmed the appointment of six new Non-Executive Directors to their Board as they look to bring additional expertise to the governing and regulatory body. The appointments were; Atholl Duncan, Julie Harrington, Noel Harwerth, Joe Saumarez Smith, Laura Whyte and Eamonn Wilmott.

Speaking after the appointments Steve Harman, Chairman of BHA, said, “This is the start of a new chapter for the BHA Board and the next step in its evolution as a governing and regulatory body.”

He added, “The new appointments mean that there will be a significant broadening and deepening of the expertise around the BHA Board table. This includes Media and Government Relations, individuals with Entrepreneurial, Investor, Financial and Betting backgrounds, good regulatory knowledge and considerable Training, Development and Welfare experience.”

Hopefully the British Horse Racing Authority will continue to play a vital role in helping horse racing to flourish in this country. Everyone at Sport in Profile Magazine would like to wish them the best of luck for the future.

We at Lee Vapours, was looking to help a local team or group with a sponsorship to help them grow, within the field the sponsorship would be in.

Luck would have it that one of the players of the team, had made a post on facebook looking for help with sponsorship for the team she had not long moved to. We made contact with the player and setup a meeting with the team management to discuss how we could help.

After meeting the team who we have grown to know and support them as much as we can. We are not just a name on the team’s top. We try to make it to every home game, training sessions and away games. The U16s were winning comfortably week in week out and the step up to the ladies was a bit of an eye opener for them. So we’ve put the extra side in place to try and bridge that gap, easing the transition into the senior game.” Challenges “It all comes down to finance for us I think. It costs us a great deal to run the club every season and we have a lot of expenses. A lot of the team’s we go to are under the umbrella of the men’s clubs and we don’t have that in place.” Ambitions “We’ve got our vision in place for what we’d like to achieve. We want to gain our own venue with a training facility but it will be important to raise the funding necessary to enable us to do so. We’ve got ground grading requirements that need to be met and so for us to have a facility of our own would be absolutely fantastic.

Basically, we just want to carry on the way we are with the strong youth structure we’ve got within our club, progressing players through the ranks whilst bringing in experienced players to help the side to flourish.”

They will be keen to push on from here as a good run of form could see them quickly climb the table. It will certainly be exciting to see how the rest of the season goes for them and there is a real confidence amongst the players that they can finish strongly.

Formby HC is a club that is committed to providing as many people as possible from the local area with an opportunity to play the game and they have a number of additional sides running. This allows them to give far more players a game every week than if they only had first teams.

A major benefit of having so many sides is that it allows the first teams to benefit from far greater strength in depth. If they are ever left short on numbers through injury or work commitments they have the option of calling players up with a limited amount of disruption.

There is much to admire about Formby HC as they continue to play a vital role in their community. Hopefully they will be able to continue the good work for many years to come and everyone at Sport in Profile Magazine would like to wish them the best of luck for the future.

Silver Jubilee Park /// www.neasdengaels.com /// Founded 1989

The team is based in Kingsbury, North London having first been established in February 1989 following a meeting between officials at McDonagh’s Bar in North West London. They were first founded by Michael Cleary, Roger O’Connor, Jim Devine, Bobby Moynihan, Claire Moynihan, Danny O’Sullivan and Michael McDonagh who was appointed as the first team manager.

The club has certainly come a long way since then, winning the intermediate championship in 1996. They did not stop there either as they went on to win the London Senior Championship in 1999 just 10 years after being set up and are now one of the top sides in Britain.

Their success in recent times is there for all to see as they competed in the 2008, 2009 and 2010 London Senior Championship Finals, winning it in 2010. They also enjoyed a terrific run in the All Ireland Club Cup, making it to the quarter finals before being defeated by the eventual champions Crossmaglen Rangers.

One of the reasons for the success that the club has achieved has undoubtedly been the superb set of facilities that they have which are some of the best in London. They have a full-size playing field, floodlit pitch with stand, 4 changing rooms and a clubhouse with bar and function rooms at their Jubilee Park and Kingsbury FC Town grounds.

The team did not perhaps enjoy the campaign that they would have liked in 2015 in League Division 1 as they put together a record of 1 win, 2 draws and 3 defeats from their first 6 matches. This saw them finish in the bottom half of the table with 4 points on the board.

40 ISSUE 04 NEASDEN GAELS TWITTER /// @NeasdenGaels GFC

Their performances were not without positives however and the management team will look to draw on these as they build for 2015. It will certainly be exciting to see how they are able to get on in the New Year.

There is plenty of optimism around the club as they look to have a successful season and they are targeting honours with the hope of winning both the London Division 1 Senior League and the London Senior Championship.

They are currently looking for players based in Central, North or North- West London to join there successful squad with training taking place on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Jubilee Park. With a couple of quality additions they will be in with a good chance of challenging for honours.

There is much to admire about the set-up that Neasden Gaels GFC currently has in place and this should enable them to look forwards to a bright and successful future. Everyone at Sport in Profile Magazine would like to take this opportunity to wish them the best of luck for the New Year.

He said, “I used to coach with an Australian international player called Trid Woodhouse. Trid was Director of Hockey from 2006-2008 and he took me to the club following a coaching session. I was seriously impressed with the setup. The club is opposite the All England Club and has great facilities for Hockey, Cricket, tennis and Squash. I felt it was a diamond in the rough that had relatively little exposure and I thought this could be a unique opportunity to work with a club that had very little performance culture up to this point. It had bags of potential.” The Role “The most rewarding aspect of my role is definitely seeing individuals of all ages improve and blossom into talented players. The pathway a player takes to improve is something I am passionate about; so when you see players are inspired by their sport and they push themselves, it’s very gratifying.

We have 44 coaches working within our structure and 1200 plus members so there is a lot of time spent organising, planning and delivering sessions and ensuring that club is constantly moving forward. Our ladies 1’s have recently been promoted to the Investec Conference East and they are building on their successes.

We have increased our junior section so we no longer have any waiting lists in any age groups. This allows us to grow our base and hopefully increase the amount of home grown talent at the club. The prospect of the men making the Premiership play offs this season is realistic and this gives us a chance to make Europe - this would be a dream come true for most club members and so there is a huge amount of excitement in the air!” Success “We have a huge number of volunteers and supporters who have contributed to our success in many ways. Ensuring that our junior section is thriving is high on my list of priorities. We run various midweek academies on an invitational basis. These sessions are a stepping stone for the stronger players to transition from the junior section to the senior section. Senior training sessions are on the same evening so this allows for a clear transition from one session to the next. Our coach and captains can also have an overview of players so we discuss progress and put players forward where necessary.” Community “We are definitely a community

Croyde Surf Club does an outstanding job of providing people an opportunity to get involved in surfing.Sport in Profile Magazine caught up with their Manager, Rob Whitney to find out more.

He told us, “I’ve been involved with CSC for the past five years. I love surfing so it was a no brainer really. Surfing has been in our community for years and there was (and still is) a huge kudos being a part of the club. Watching locals rip in the water and knowing they were a part of the club made me want to be like them. The Role “As Chairman of this voluntary organisation, I guess my role is extremely varied. With so many people so passionate about surfing, the biggest challenge of the club is trying to continue to set high standards within British surfing. We’re always trying to stay one step ahead of the rest and be a leader for others to follow.

We want to run the best competitions, produce the best surfers and have the most fun. All of this isn’t possible without the help of our membership and therefore we’re always on the hunt for volunteers to help us to achieve our goals.

The most rewarding aspects come from watching our groms (youngsters) gain success both in the UK and abroad, and putting Croyde on the surfing map. We also have some very successful women in the sport as well, which is helping to increase participation in this area. Of course, continued club success in the National Interclubs helps, especially when it comes to bragging rights in North Devon.” Atmosphere “I would describe the atmosphere here as very excited! We’ve just secured planning permission for a brand new clubhouse and are in negotiations with the local council and land owners on how soon we can get this off the ground. Unfortunately it is still largely a male dominated sport and we want to continue to bring female surfers through. We’re hoping that these girls can continue to inspire the next generation of women.” Ambitions “We want to continue to set high standards. We’ve got some great talent coming through the ranks at the moment in Taz Knight, Will Bailey and Alex Gibson. It would be great to see what these guys can achieve in the next five years.

Taz is already dipping in to big wave surfing with Andrew Cotton, and Will and Alex are starting to make their mark in the Europeans. We also want to make sure that we’re an inclusive club. The Durham Wildcats are based at The Graham Sports Centre at Maiden Castle on Stockton Road and they currently compete in the BBL Championship. He said, “I joined the Wildcats team in the summer of 2011 just weeks before the start of the clubs’ first BBL season. The Chairman and I had previously worked closely together through our roles at Durham University and the opportunity to get involved with the Wildcats was too good an opportunity to turn down.” The Role “Without question the most rewarding part of the role is seeing the number of young people participating in our ever-growing community programme. The ambition of the club has always been to make basketball accessible and affordable to all and, over the past three years, we have seen a significant increase in the number of young people participating in the sport throughout the County. As for the most challenging aspect… I’d have to say away trips to Plymouth, it’s quite a long way from Durham!” Atmosphere “After a few close losses, our Captain Ralph Bucci recently hit a buzzer beating 3 pointer against , and that certainly lifted spirits both on and off the court. It was one of those moments that all involved with the club won’t be forgetting in a while, and hopefully it will spark the start of a good run of form for the team.” This Season “A number of new faces arrived over the summer so naturally there was an expectation that it would take a few games to get the chemistry right on court. Having rebranded this year, the Lancashire Spinners Basketball Team have made an encouraging start to their current campaign. Chairman Ken Masser took the time to tell us more about the good work that they have been doing lately.

He told us, “The club was only formed this year as a rebrand of a club originally called Rossendale Raptors. The Lancashire Spinners play basketball in the Basketball England National Basketball League.

My personal involvement with the club dates back to 2008 when I started to volunteer for the then Rossendale Basketball Club.

We quickly re-established the clubs ambition and status within the community and after a series of 5 promotions in 6 years we are now playing in the second tier of English Basketball as the Lancashire Spinners.” The Role “For all clubs, particularly those in minority sports like basketball, funding and financing the club our probably our biggest challenges. We have huge court hire bills annually, and also lots of travelling expenses considering our league is made up of teams from London, Ipswich and Loughborough amongst others.

The most rewarding aspects for us are the enjoyment we get out of seeing so many people enjoying watching the team (with crowds of over 300), and to see young players with limited opportunities in life showcasing their amazing talent on the court.” Atmosphere “We’re in a really good place at the moment. We’ve won 9 of our first 11 games, we’re second in the league and have made our way through to the semi-finals of the cup. Our squad are fit and healthy and things are very positive. We are stable financially thanks to the support of our sponsors, particularly our two main supporters World Options and Debit Finance (DFC). So overall things are looking pretty good.” This Season “There are a few things which have gone well for us, firstly we spent a lot of time preparing for the season both on and off the court. We’ve got a fantastic group of young players who have put in the time and effort to become very good. Because the players are local, and know each other, that’s giving us a real advantage against some of the other teams who have brought in overseas players and are still trying to gel together.”

Progression “We have a number of players showing promise at the moment as we have quite a young squad. 20 year old Conor Porter is having a great impact and has quickly become one of our most important players. He’s got a great engine, is an excellent defender and one of the best all round players in the league.

Josh Houghton (22) is currently second top scorer in the whole league and Andre Gayle (19) is in the top five in the league in rebounds, steals and 3 point shooting percentage. We’ve got other young up and coming players who are really making an impact, including twins Taiwo Ogunneye and his brother Kenny. The twins are two of the most athletic players in the country and whilst they’re a little raw – they’ve got huge potential. We have Steven Vaughan (22) who at 6’10 is literally making a huge difference for us, particularly as a defender and a rebounder.” Commercial “We’re working hard to engage local people and have developed some great local connections. We’re working closely with the Joshua Wilson Brain Tumour Charity which is not only a terrific cause that we love to support, but is also really helping us to connect with the community. I think that connection in schools and within our local towns is really going to be the key for the club moving forwards as we strive to grow our fan base.” Challenges “The biggest challenge is always going to be balancing the books. Whilst we are stable financially, and work hard to ensure we live within our means, it’s a constant struggle to raise enough funds to meet our costs each year.

Finding sufficient sponsorship, developing our fan base and income on game nights and keeping our costs within budget are going to be the big challenges. On the court we have a great group of players who could compete at the next level and with one or two additions we could be competitive with anyone in the Basketball England League.” Ambitions

“We are keen to really integrate more into our local community. We want to be involved as well as to give back to the local people who support us. We would love to find a venue of our own so that we wouldn’t have to be constantly hiring facilities, but having said that the support we get from Bury Leisure, Bury Council and Rossendale Leisure Trust is fantastic and we really appreciate their support. We would love to win a trophy or two but our main aim on the court is to play at the highest level. We think we can gain promotion from Division 2 and compete at the top of the first division.”

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full-contact combat sport that allows the use of both striking and grappling techniques, both standing and on the ground, from a variety of other combat sports and martial arts. Owner of MMA Newcastle, Alex Wright took the time to give us an insight into his organisation and the increasingly popular sport as a whole.

He told us, “I’ve been involved specifically in MMA since 2003 but prior to that had spent a lot of time training in boxing and Chinese Martial Arts. MMA was simply a progression really from my basis in other traditions. My journey in Mixed Martial Arts has been an amazing experience and built many really solid friendships, the toughness of the sport mixed with the emotional highs and lows makes your training partners very close and I think that’s an area so few people appreciate from outside the sport. It’s also taken me to the USA, Brazil and around Europe training.” 2014 “It’s been a very tough year for a lot of retail based business’s and I don’t think we are an exception. However we’ve made a lot of positive changes and are looking to branch out further into continuing to make the MMA NEWCASTLE store on Forth Banks a real hub for Professional Fighters in the North East with the introduction of a Not For Profit Coffee Bar and some really exciting new brands.

The www.mmanewcastle.co.uk website is going from strength to strength; we built it in the summer and people don’t realise this is for the community and is there to help clubs and events in the North east Promote their activities. The main E commerce business www.fightstorepro. com which is essentially a more nationally based MMA & Kickboxing equipment store pays the bills but MMA NEWCASTLE is really a community project; a community I’m personally very much part of.”

Brampton Golf Club is a great example of a great example of what can be achieved in a well- run, superbly administered set-up. We caught up with Club Secretary Diana Banks to find out more about the work that they’ve been doing lately.

She told us, “Brampton is a members golf club based in and we’ve achieved our centenary year in 2009. I have been at the Club since September 2011. I don’t play golf and love the job here, friendly people both visitors and members with a broad spectrum of ages, occupations etc. The biggest rewards of the role are the beautiful surroundings, as well as the lovely friendly folk visiting and playing. Seeing success in the growth and further development of the club is also very rewarding.

The mood down at the club at the moment is really positive. Like every club in the UK we’ve had the issue of membership being on the decline but 2014 went well with visitor numbers maintained and slightly above the previous year. We’ve just changed our inhouse catering steward and I think everyone is behind what we’re trying to do and we’re making good progress.

Youth development is massive to the club here. Our juniors are the future members of the golf club and we pride ourselves on being an important part of the community. A lot of the children in the local area are members. We’ve split the juniors into two sections split at under/over 12s for competitive golf and we run them side by side which is going well.

There’s some really good players that have just left the junior section having turned 18 and they’ve got real potential. We’ve a number of players representing the county sides for Cumbria at junior level and we’re proud of the progress that they are making.

We’ve got our annual junior open coming up and have also introduced a mini four hole competition for the end of the Summer which is something to look forwards to. That had good numbers attending and all the youngsters involved have remained with the club.

One of the biggest challenges for us is the financial side of running the club. A lot of full members don’t have the time to play golf because of time restraints so it is important that we come up with new ways to get new membership into the club. That’s going to be very important for us this year and we believe that starts with the junior section. The BIGGEST... The BEST... St Vincent’s in 1960 in Stockwood park: History St Vincent’s GFC was founded back in 1959 due to the huge numbers of available Irish immigrants who were residing in the Luton Area. During the 60’s and 70’s Luton Town was a boom town fuelled by the huge employment from the local Vauxhall Car manufacture. The newly formed team played friendlies against other local sides and London teams as there was no organised league. In 1960 the Hertfordshire League was formed bringing together a number of newly formed teams.

The standard of football back in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s was to such a high standard that most players were either ex-county players from Ireland or to that Proud to support standard. St. Vincent’s dominated the Hertfordshire league for much of the first 3 decades up to the late 80’s/ early 90’s. They dominated so much during this period that their collection of achievements has not been matched to date. Underage St Vincents GAA The factory line of Irish players decreased dramatically during the early 2000’s, due to the economic bubble in Ireland which resulted in some teams unable to field and subsequently folding. This highlighted the need to stop relying on the seasonal players Tel:020 8904 9272 www.lorclon.com and develop the grass roots.

St Vincent’s started their under-age campaign back in the early 90’s, even though they experienced great success they were unable to keep it going for long. To date St Vincent’s Under-age club is going from strength to strength with the fielding of our first under 21 team in a long time.

This under 21 team is the fruits of our under 10’s and 12’s back in 2005 who have stayed together over the years. The success over the last 10 years is much contributed to the involvement of the parents namely Gerry Taylor, James Condron and Charlie Timoney to name a few who have tirelessly devoted countless hours to meetings, courses, training and matches.

Under 16 team 2011 Sport is a great way to develop a child’s team work and life skills, Gaelic Football is no different. In fact, due to its unique set up it is ideal for kids who might not have experienced success in other sports. “Go- Games” was developed to allow young kids to start being involved in sport without the influence and pressure of having winners as they are not allowed to play for cup’s until they are over the age of 14.

Unfortunately in today’s society sport is often over looked as it is too time consuming, or just too much effort. Those who have made the effort to try Gaelic football generally stay committed. Gaelic is played over the summer months where there are longer days allowing more time to have training later in the day.

The Season starts with training commencing around St Patricks Day (March) and ends around mid September. Every year St Vincent’s kids will join in the local Parade. Portarlington Golf Club is an 18 hole course which is owned by its members and is marked as one of the top 100 courses in Ireland by Golfs Digest. The club has put together a history of which it has every right to be proud since being established and is looking to continue progressing in the coming years.

Recent reviews have also rated the course in the Top 10 “Value for Money” Courses in Ireland and they always look to continue to improve having acquired land which is waiting to be developed.

Based in Garryhinch in County Laois in Ireland, Portarlington Golf Club does a terrific job of providing people with an opportunity to play the game. Much of the credit for this must go to their hard-working Committee which is led by President Paddy Bates who is supported by Secretary Tom Hainsworth.

Portarlington itself is a town on the border of County Laois and County Offaly with the River Barrow providing the split. The southern end of the town is dominated visually by a glacial hill that is known as ‘Corrig’ which is topped by a stone structure called the ‘spire’ which was built in the 19th century.

Corrig provides impressive views on all sides with some spectacular sights ensuring that a visit to the area to play golf can also provide people with plenty of other satisfaction.

The clubhouse at Portarlington is kept to a high quality in order to ensure that golfers have somewhere to enjoy their time after playing on the course. Terry Hollands success as a strongman competitor means that he needs no introduction having won Britain’s strongest man and also competed at the World’s Strongest Man competition on numerous occasions.

Hollands career didn’t begin in a strength- related field however as rugby was his initial sport of choice. Injury de-railed his development in the game and that was when he turned to a different kind of training.

British Strongman Terry didn’t begin his career in a strength-related field, and it was Rugby that was his original sport of choice. After contracting an infection and being unable to play, he eventually returned to the gym to focus on rebuilding his strength and that’s when he began a new kind of training.

Known for having a training regime that he himself describes as, “ferociously unforgiving”, the results speak for themselves with Hollands being one of only four British men to have ever taken the podium at World’s Strongest Man. He credits the positive effects of visualisation in helping him achieve success.

His strongman career began in 2005 with him achieving impressive results immediately as he came 2nd at England’s Strongest Man and won UK’s Strongest Man. He lost his title the following year to Glenn Ross but did manage to qualify for the World’s Strongest Man competition.

He came back even stronger, training even harder and by 2007 took the title of Britain’s Strongest Man. He also consistently finishes in the Top 5 rankings of the WSM contest, and in 2014 was ranked 5th Strongest in the world.

2007 was a terrific year for Hollands as he highlighted his reputation as one of the top Strongmen in the world, taking the British title and achieving a top 3 finish in World’s Strongest Man, becoming the first Brit to do so for over 10 years.

He made the final of Britain’s Strongest Man again in 2008 before achieving a respectable 6th place finish in 2009. He then started 2010 in terrific form in the Strongman Champions League before being side-lined by injury. He was still crowned the overall SCL champion.

Hollands did not let his injury slow him down however, battling back to claim his 2nd podium finish at World’s Strongest Man the following year. He has continued to perform well since and is an excellent Ambassador for British athletes. Sport in Profile Magazine wishes him the best of luck for the future.

British snowsports – a success story

British Skiing and Snowboarding has enjoyed a fantastic year in 2014 with the progress that has been made being capped off by Jenny Jones winning GB’s first medal on snow in the history of the Winter Olympics. Media Officer for British Skiing and Snowbarding Betony Garner took the time to give us an insight into their success.

She told us, “Snowsports in Great Britain has made amazing steps forward in the last four years. In 2010 the governing body for snowsports in the UK, Snowsports GB, went into liquidation, and since the new governing body, British Ski and Snowboard, was set up just ahead of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, skiing and snowboarding in this country has never looked back.

The success can be attributed to several things. A new set up, including a new Performance Director for British Ski and Snowboard, many talented freestyle skiers and snowboarders coming out of the UK indoor and artificial slopes scene, and continued support from UK Sport and sponsors including British Ski and Snowboard headline sponsor Delancey.” Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics “For British snowsports the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games were a milestone – our most successful ever since 1924. With six top 10 finishes - including Britain’s first ever Winter Olympic Snowboard medal - a further five athletes in the top 20, and three more in the top 30, Sochi 2014 was remarkable for British snowsports.” Legacy “We are confident that the success of our athletes, and the exposure given to snowsports during the Games will inspire new people to take up snowsports and inspire our younger athletes to aim high and try to emulate the success of Jenny Jones and the rest of the team.

We have already seen an upturn in the use of artificial and indoor slopes in the UK, and have seen Snowsport England run a successful participation campaign, GO SKI GO BOARD (www.goskigoboard.org.uk), which gives cost effective ways to try the sport at a local slope. The campaign will continue throughout this winter season and into next summer.”

Glenshee Ski Centre offers the UK’s most extensive skiing and snowboarding facilities, offering 36 runs for all standards of skiers and snowboarders. Sport in Profile Magazine caught up with Ski Patrol Director Kate Hunter to find out more.

She told us, “I have been involved since Dec 1980 in various roles culminating in being a director of Glenshee Ltd and Ski Patrol Chief. How I came to be here is pure chance having been to the Ski Show in London and got a job ski instructing at Glenshee. As head of ski patrol the most challenging part of the job is to minimise the risk of the public hurting themselves without removing the elements of excitement and challenge involved in Snow sports. The most rewarding part of the job is making someone who is sick and injured feel better and to promote reassurance for a speedy recovery.

The season of 2014 (Dec13to April 14) was a good season with approximately 84,000 customers. It was a hard season as there was a lot of snow but not always in the right place (tows were buried) and only 7 days of sunshine. All of the team were exhausted at the end probably suffering from lack of sunshine and good visability.

We are in this business to be uplifted by the mountains, snow and sunshine. The summer consists of maintenance and planning for the next season. The cafe is open year round and our iconic Cairnwell chair was open July and August (for walkers, bird watchers, mountain bikers and sightseers). We have opened this season on the 13th Dec 14 but only with a couple of runs; hopefully we have more snow by the holiday period.

We have 3 chairlifts and 18 ground lifts accessing 40km of pisted runs. There is a vast amount of off piste with incredible easily accessible ski touring in the area. We have 2 Pistenbully 600 groomers with 4 smaller models to keep the runs in good condition. There are 3 cafes, 2 on the mountain and one at roadside. The Colts’ Section has for a long time been a vital part of the Club with now over 200 members. In recent years there have been many successes at Club, County and National levels. This season there are 11 teams playing on a Sunday, as well as four teams playing Indoor Hockey and all are doing well. Recently, in most years, eight to ten of our Juniors from the various age groups have been in County or Regional teams.

Three of the Saturday teams are Development XIs and this has been a great success in helping in the transition from junior to adult hockey. Our Club is very much a family club and has strong ties with the local community. Every weekend people of all ages are playing, watching or supporting. Over the year, fund raising and other events are well- supported.

Our main artificial pitch is some two miles away at Broadbridge Heath on the north-west side of Horsham. The biggest challenge ahead in the next five years is to find a new site where the pitch can be next to the clubhouse and this is being actively investigated.

Based at 53 Bell Villas in , Ponteland Golf Club is based in the village of Ponteland, approximately 10 miles north of Newcastle. The club was first established in 1927 and has put together a history of which they have every right to be proud since then.

It is a picturesque parkland course which offers players a memorable experience and is a challenge for competitors of all levels. They are currently led by President Mr G McMurchie whilst Mr R Fraser is their Captain and they have made a considerable amount of progress under their guidance.

Over the years Ponteland has built a reputation for providing golfers with a high quality playing experience with the course being kept in superb condition by their staff. The greens are renowned for their slickness and trueness and the club offers 8 buggies to rent for professionals in order to further enhance the experience offered.

The fine work that the club does was rewarded in 2014 as they were chosen to host the 2014 Northumberland County Championship in June and this saw some of the best players from around the county taking part. This was a just reward for all of the hard work that has been put into making the club a success.

Ponteland received further recognition for their fine work when they became one of the first Clubs in Northumberland to be awarded the GolfMark award. This was thanks to their commitment to the development of juniors and junior golfers as they look to provide youngsters with an opportunity to play the game in a safe and enjoyable environment

/// www.ickleford.play-cricket.com ///

Ickleford Cricket Club has evidence of a game being played as far back as 1869 but the current club started in 1947 playing games at the Manor Ground in Turnpike Lane. We moved to a ground of our own in 1978 in Chambers Lane on land leased from Herts County Council to Ickleford Parish Council where facilities are shared with football, squash and petanque.

For many years the club ran just one side and fixtures were local. The advent of league cricket required more travel and more players and a second team made its debut in 1981. The need to find more players led to a colts section starting in 1986 with a third team starting in 1993.

The club now have three teams in the Saracens Herts League on Saturdays and one team in the Beds County League on Sundays with a second team playing friendlies. 2014 was a good season for the club as on Saturdays the first team finished 7th in Division 2 of the Saracens Herts League with better results against the top teams than those in the bottom half. The second team won promotion from Division 6 as they finished runners up winning 13 games and losing just 3, while the third team just missed promotion from Division 10 finishing 5th.

The Sunday first team gained a fourth consecutive promotion, finishing runners up in Division 2 of the Beds County League and it is fair to say that each of Ickleford's teams played up to or above expectations. With a thriving colts section which saw teams run at U9, U11 and U13 age groups Ickleford can be well pleased with their 2014 season.

Off the field Ickleford continue to make good progress. At Ickleford a new electronic scoreboard was installed together with a new sightscreen as each year facilities are improved. It was also a significant year as Ickleford moved to a new permanent second ground at Holwell which is less than two miles from the Ickleford ground. Facilities are excellent and the club are lucky to have secured such a good second ground so near to home.

108 ISSUE 04 ICKLEFORD CC

Looking ahead there is optimism with a talented group of players under the age of 21 who should only improve and can form the core of the first team for many years to come. Each team has a good mixture of age groups and team spirit has been particularly strong with no 'them and us' concerns.

A big emphasis will continue to be placed on the colts section and with players starting at U9 level by the time they are ready for senior cricket they will have had many years of coaching behind them. It will remain important to keep improving facilities as this will help to attract new players on top of home produced colts. While Ickleford are a village team competing with much larger town sides there is no reason to be daunted by the challenge and our reputation has certainly been enhanced by progress on and off the field.

I have played over 1,000 games for Ickleford and feel really proud of how far we have come from humble beginnings in 1947 and see no reason why Ickleford should not continue to prosper especially with the excellent sponsors the club are lucky to have with Jas Bowman & Sons about to sponsor our cricket balls for the 29th consecutive year.

/// www.cartmel-racecourse.co.uk/ ///

Based in the Lake District, Cartmel Racecourse rekindles the spirit of traditional steeplechases with a breath-taking background. The course has an exciting year ahead of them and PR Manager Jonathan Garrett took the time to tell us more.

He told us, “I have managed Cartmel for four years, following roles at Worcester, Fontwell Park and Scottish Racing. Cartmel is an iconic racecourse – attracting amazing crowds in a beautiful setting.

In July we stage the barbecue meeting, where many people bring their own barbecues and cook lunch before or after racing. We also stage the biggest barbecue competition in Britain – which runs along similar lines to Ready Steady Cook. It also happens to be our most valuable raceday – when we stage the £25,000 Cumbria Crystal Cup. The day always provides several highlights – from the pulled pork sandwiches, to the tight finishes.” History “The racecourse has staged racing under rules for more than 150 years, although it is likely that there were meetings here a long time before the first fixture recorded in the racing Calendar in 1856. It was reported that the Bishop of York was once very angry to discover that there were no monks to receive him at the Priory – because they were all racing in a local park. The Priory is 800 years old and the last monks left when they were scattered by Henry VIII – so that would have been quite a long time ago.

The track itself is just over a mile round, but has an unusual finishing straight which bisects the circuit, dividing the interior into two enclosures, where the spectators are based. We have just one tiny Grandstand, in the centre of the course, which houses the jockeys changing rooms, Weighing Room, stewards, etc.” 2014 “The weather in 2014 was fair, but the forecasters had an unfortunate habit of predicting rain on our racedays – which happily didn’t arrive. Don’t listen to those pesky forecasters!

I was hoping that Soul Magic was going to win his eighth race at Cartmel – but he pulled up lame and it turned out he had a small foot infection. Trained by Harriet Graham in the Scottish Borders, he is our joint winning-most horse ever, so I hope that he might extend that record in 2015.

/// www.irlamamateurboxingacademy.co.uk ///

Based on the 1st Floor of 98 Liverpool Road in Salford, Irlam Amateur Boxing Club is a great example of a club which plays a vital role in their local community. They have been training and guiding amateur and professional boxers for many years under the guidance of owner and Head Coach Gary Booth.

A major part of the good work that they have been doing is in relation to what they do with young people in the local area. This part of their set up looks to provide youngsters with an opportunity to take part in boxing in a safe and enjoyable environment whilst helping them to reach their full potential.

It is important for any modern day sports club to support the youth of their local region and this is clearly an area that Irlam has covered. It will certainly be exciting to see how their current group of young prospects is able to develop over the coming years.

In the past they have managed to produce some extremely talented young boxers, helping them to become rising stars in the boxing world. With great trainers and coaches they put on lessons for both children and seniors and are widely recognised as one of the best clubs around.

This is thanks to the fact that they pride themselves on having something for everyone, creating an environment where people can learn and they encourage anyone interested to come along and take a look around.

Head Coach Gary Booth deserves tremendous credit for the fine establishment that he has put together over the years, running the gym as a not for profit organisation. He is a fully qualified ABA boxing coach and uses boxing and fitness sessions to positively engage children and young people in the community.

This in turn has a positive impact on the wider community. Gary is supported by a fine team made up of parents, coaches and volunteers that are all CRB checked to ensure that they are able to provide everybody involved with the best experience possible.

There is much to admire about the fantastic set up that Irlam Boxing Club currently has in place and hopefully they will be able to continue in the same manner for many years to come. Everyone at Sport in Profile Magazine would like to take this opportunity to wish them the best of the luck for the future.
