Movies & Languages 2019-2020 Movies & Languages 2019-2020 Rocketman About the movie DIRECTOR Dexter Fletcher YEAR/COUNTRY 2019/USA RUNTIME 121 min. LANGUAGE English with English subtitles GENRE Musical ACTORS Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell PLOT The film follows the life of Elton John, who was born in 1947 and originally named Reggie Dwight, until the early 1980’s. It is cleverly pieced together in two ways: on the one hand, his music is played in chronological order as we see him as a child and a youngster growing up with his parents and grandmother in a lower middleclass household on the outskirts of London; on the other hand, the film uses a discussion group centring around his rehabilitation at an alcoholic anonymous centre as a central theme to look at critical points in his life (his father, coming out as gay, drugs). His father was blocked emotionally and expressed very little love. His mother and father get a divorce leaving Elton at first even more confused and dejected. He uses music to pull himself out of a depressing situations. From the moment that a record company gives him a break there is no looking back. Together with his songwriter Bernie Taupin, they make one successful record after another. LANGUAGE A lot of the English in the movie is typical of the English lower-middleclass. There are, however, a good dose of other accents like American and Scottish. Stephen Erlewine has noted that, although Elton John has endured temporary slumps in creativity and sales, he continues to craft contemporary pop standards that showcase his musical versatility. John's combination of melodic skills, dynamic charisma, and raucous performance style has made him a remarkably popular musical artist. Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in Pinner, Middlesex, England on March 25, 1947. Dwight began playing piano at age four and, when he was eleven, won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London. After six years at school, he left in order to break into the music business. In 1961 he joined his first band, Bluesology, but left in 1966 because of creative differences with bandleader Long John Baldry. During this time Dwight had answered a Liberty Records advertisement for songwriters; and, though he failed the vocal audition, he was given a stack of lyrics written by Bernie Taupin, a young songwriter from Lincolnshire who had also answered the ad.

The consummate live entertainer, providing a splashy, larger-than-life visual spectacle to complement his mi (Photo circa 1977-78, Soul Train) Elton Hercules John—the stage name he officially adopted—had a lock on the ’70s. “Who knows, when I’m 45 years old there might be an Elton John renaissance and I can come around doing the Hoagy Carmichael bit.” —Rolling Stone, 6/10/71 ontrary to the artist sown prediction, issued atan early point in his career, there has never beenan Elton John renaissance. There hasn’t had to be, because he’s remained consis tently popular and productive for all the intervening years since he made that statement. As of1992, in fact, he broke Elvis Presley’s old record for the most consecutive years of Top 40 hits Con Billboard’s singles chart, having been a continual presence in every annum since the late-1970 entry of “Your Song.” Today, at 46, he is among the most successful acts of the rock era, arguably in a class with Presley and the Beatles. Moreover, his longevity as an ongoing, active recording artist surpasses that of either of them. No one can boast a longer uninterrupted ride at the top. In all respects it has been a remarkable career. John emerged from the obscurity of a British song publisher’s office in a mete oric rise during the seventies that earned him the then-new sobri quet “superstar." Toting a wardrobe of outrageous costumes and glasses from coast to coast and continent to continent, he was the consummate live entertainer, providing a splashy, larger- to people living with HIV/AIDS and for educational pro than-life visual spectacle to complement his music.
