2 Almighty and everlasting God, you govern all things both in heaven and on earth: Mercifully hear the supplications of your people, and in our time grant us your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Readings The congregation is seated. Lector

A Reading From Exodus 22:21-27

“You shall not wrong a sojourner or oppress him, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt. You shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child. If you do mistreat them, and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry, and my wrath will burn, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall become widows and your children fatherless. “If you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor, you shall not be like a moneylender to him, and you shall not exact interest from him. If ever you take your neighbor's cloak in pledge, you shall return it to him before the sun goes down, for that is his only covering, and it is his cloak for his body; in what else shall he sleep? And if he cries to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 1 Prayed responsively by the whole verse

Blessed is the man who has not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners, and has not sat in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law will he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the waterside, that will bring forth his fruit in due season. His leaf also shall not wither; and look, whatever he does, it shall prosper.

3 As for the ungodly, it is not so with them; but they are like the chaff, which the wind scatters away from the face of the earth. Therefore the ungodly shall not be able to stand in the judgment, neither the sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

A Reading From 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8

For you yourselves know, brothers, that our coming to you was not in vain. But though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we had boldness in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in the midst of much conflict. For our appeal does not spring from error or impurity or any attempt to deceive, but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts. For we never came with words of flattery, as you know, nor with a pretext for greed—God is witness. Nor did we seek glory from people, whether from you or from others, though we could have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children. So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel Gradual “O Church, Arise” Please stand.

O church, arise, and put your armor on; Hear the call of Christ our Captain For now the weak can say that they are strong In the strength that God has given.

4 With shield of faith and belt of truth, We'll stand against the devil's lies, An army bold whose battle cry is "Love!" Reaching out to those in darkness.

The Gospel Fr. Henry Pendergrass

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

A Reading from the Gospel of Matthew 22:34-46

But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” He said to them, “How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet”’? If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?” And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Gospel Gradual “O Church, Arise”

Come, see the cross where love and mercy meet, As the Son of God is stricken; Then see his foes lie crushed beneath his feet, For the Conqueror has risen.

5 And as the stone is rolled away And Christ emerges from the grave, This vict'ry march continues till the day Ev'ry eye and heart shall see him.

The Sermon Chaplain Skip Hedgpeth The congregation is seated.

Nicene Creed Fr. Jonathan Hartzer We stand together with Christians throughout the centuries, and throughout the world today, to affirm our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

May your Holy Spirit work through our words, deeds, and prayers, that the lost may be found and the dead made alive, and that all your redeemed may rejoice around your throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.

A Musical Meditation Debbie Butler The congregation may offer their prayers aloud or in the quiet of their hearts.

The Confession Fr. Jonathan Hartzer

We pray to You also, for the forgiveness of our sins. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

8 The Absolution Fr. Henry Pendergrass

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving Fr. Henry Pendergrass Remain standing.

Is the Father with us? He is. Is Christ among us? He is. Is the Spirit here? He is. This is our God. Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.

10 We are his people. We are redeemed. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who on the first day of the week overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

See music on overhead screen Holy, holy, holy — Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name, of the Lord. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Please kneel

Almighty God, we thank you for giving up your Son to die on the cross for us who owe you everything. Pour your refreshing Spirit on us and upon these gifts as we remember him in the way he commanded, through this bread and wine.

On the same night that he was betrayed he took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” Amen. His body was broken for us.

In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them saying: “Drink this, all of you; this is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins: Do this as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

11 Therefore, heavenly Father, hear us as we celebrate this covenant with joy, and await the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. He died in our place, making a full atonement for the sins of the whole world. You accepted his offering by raising him from death, and granting him great honor at your right hand on high. Amen. Jesus is Lord!

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread Fr. Henry Pendergrass The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread.

“Jesus, Lamb of God” All sing.

Jesus, Lamb of God: have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins: have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world: give us your peace.

The Invitation to Holy Communion Fr. Henry Pendergrass

The gifts of God for you, the people of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on Him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

The Holy Communion is distributed Please allow the choir and prayer ministers to be served before coming forward. During the distribution of the Holy Communion, the congregation may sit or kneel as the following songs are sung:

12 “Break Thou the Bread of Life”

Break thou the bread of life, dear Lord, to me, As thou didst break the loaves beside the sea; Beyond the sacred page I seek thee, Lord; My spirit pants for thee, O Living Word.

Bless thou the truth, dear Lord, dear Lord, to me, As thou didst bless the bread by Galilee. Then shall all bondage cease, all fetters fall, And I shall find my peace, my All in All.

O send thy Spirit, Lord, now unto me, That he may touch mine eyes and make me see; Show me the truth concealed within thy Word, For in thy book revealed I see thee, Lord.

“Eat This Bread” Sing twice.

Eat this bread, drink this cup. Come to me and never be hungry. Eat this bread, drink this cup. Trust in me and you will not thirst.

“Commune With Me” Please stand.

Commune with me, commune with me Between the wings of the cherubim, Commune with me. Commune with me, commune with me Between the wings of the cherubim, Commune with me.

I worship you, I worship you Between the wings of the cherubim, I worship you. I worship you, I worship you Between the wings of the cherubim. I worship you.

13 I'll meet you there, I'll meet you there Between the wings of the cherubim. I'll meet you there. I'll meet you there, I'll meet you there Between the wings of the cherubim. I'll meet you there.

Post-Communion Prayer Fr. Henry Pendergrass Remain standing.

Let us pray. Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is error, truth; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O divine Master, grant that I may seek not so much to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

The Final Blessing Remain standing. Fr. Henry Pendergrass

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen.
