We joked that locals witnessing our lady Pilatus landing at their quaint airport must have looked something like a pterodactyls swooping in from the clouds. Denver Center had a lot on their plate that morning, so we were assigned the ever-familiar Dive Bomber-3, “visual,” into St. Francis KS. Ten miles out at 12 o’clock and high. Once again, thanks to the awesome perfor- mance characteristics of the Pilatus, these types of approaches (-3500 fpm) are very mundane and often executed without even a comment. The other is a feature formerly found only on iPad Pro models – support for the . One of the biggest benefits: Apple was able to keep the price for the basic version of the iPad down to a reasonable $329.00. The speed boost comes via Apple’s A10 Fusion processor that includes an embedded motion coprocessor. This is an Apple-designed four-core processor that features two high-performance cores and two energy efficient cores, allowing the tablet to handle demanding tasks quickly when needed, while keeping battery life at 10 hours. Apple says that the new processor is much faster than the previous generation iPad, with computing performance being 40 percent faster and graphics performance being 50 percent greater. This means that programs will load faster, most operations will run faster, and some, such as rendering a graphical image, will be even faster yet. The other is a feature formerly found only on iPad Pro models – support for the Apple Pencil. One of the biggest benefits: Apple was able to keep the price for the basic version of the iPad down to a reasonable $329.00. P limited usefulness for those apps. However, the Apple Pencil does work as a pointing device with any app. For example, you can use it to se- lect a link to a web page, or to click on a button or to tick a checkbox. Given that the Pencil is a much more precise means of control than the end of your finger, you will likely find situations in which using the pencil reduces frustration. The pencil charges by inserting the connector on the end of the device into the Lightening Port on your iPad. This also acts to pair the pencil to your tablet’s Bluetooth radios. The process is simple and fast, and the charge only takes a few minutes. If you use your iPad for non-avia- tion tasks in addition to flying, then the Pencil could be a very useful accessory. Apple made the changes that allow the Pencil to be used with the iPad primarily for the education market, however, some apps that are more generally useful, including Microsoft Office, also work with the Apple Pencil. depiction of global weather conditions. The Maps view also includes an alti- tude-adjustable winds aloft layer provid- ing a stunning view of global wind pat- terns, but the real power of ForeFlight’s winds aloft data comes from the inclusion of ISA temperature deviations. Available in preflight briefings and accounted for in all performance calculations, devia- tions from ISA can be the deciding factor in selecting an appropriate altitude for a given route of flight. With ForeFlight’s Performance Plus subscription plan dis- cussed below, the app uses ISA tempera- ture information to proactively warn you if a given altitude is not attainable due to hot/high/heavy conditions and suggests a lower altitude for the flight. If a given altitude is attainable only with a step climb profile, ForeFlight will include that information in its detailed and printable P navlog. ForeFlight’s global preflight briefing is yet another capability that you can utilize anywhere in the world. The briefing leads with helpful graphics depicting winds aloft and significant weather patterns along your route. A vertical cross-section chart provides details about winds, icing, turbulence, terrain, and even the variable tropopause boundary, all shown in rela- tion to your planned altitude throughout the flight. Following these graphics are extensive textual reports for airport on and along your route, including METARs and TAFs, SIGMETs, and NOTAMs. As with many other weather features in ForeFlight, you can save this briefing for offline and inflight access.

Global Charts & Data via Jeppesen In May 2017, ForeFlight and Jeppesen announced a strategic partnership to deliver better solutions to their respective customers. That partnership has led to an incredible expansion of ForeFlight’s flight planning capabilities thanks to the integration of Jeppesen’s world-class charts and data, allowing ForeFlight pilots to plan and conduct flights anywhere in the world. Pilots can purchase Jeppesen chart coverages along with their ForeFlight subscriptions, or link existing Jeppesen accounts to access their coverages in ForeFlight. Coverages include departure, arrival, and terminal procedures, airport charts, data-driven en route charts, and Jeppesen Airway Manual supplements. Beyond their IFR charts, Jeppesen also provides global datasets that are avail- able for all ForeFlight customers and seamlessly integrated into the app. Global high-resolution terrain and obstacle data- bases power ForeFlight’s advanced hazard awareness like Hazard Advisor, Profile View, and Synthetic Vision. The Island Line Trail continues three miles along Lake Champlain on a converted rail line to connect to the Lake Champlain Islands. If you find yourself more comfortable on a road bike, there are also some road bike tour com- panies with guided rides along scenic byways. Check out Sojourn Bicycling and Active Vacations (www.gosojourn. com) or Vermont Bicycle Tours (www.vbt.com) to view their bike tour offerings in Vermont. One of the best times of the year to visit Vermont is in the fall. Late September into early October, the leaves change color and the Green Mountains are set ablaze with brilliant bright red, orange, and yellow foliage. Every picture taken is postcard-worthy. If you choose to travel in the fall and fly into KBTV from the south, you will have the opportunity to cruise up the Champlain Valley with the Adirondacks to the west and the Green Mountains to the east. If it is a nice day, you may want to fly around VFR before landing to take in some of the sights from the air. Also consider landing at Rutland (KRUT) and renting a car to drive to Killington Resort (www.killington.com). Killington is situated in the southern Green Mountains and is the second tallest mountain in the state. Rivers swell as the snow melts, trees and plants bud and bloom as the days grow longer. Spring in Vermont brings the opportunity to explore new ac- tivities. In early spring (March and April), maple syrup farmers are hard at work collecting sap from maple trees and boiling it down to the sweet treat we drizzle on pancakes. In late March, you can visit the Green Mountain Audubon Center in Hunting- ton where they host their “Sugar on Snow” party. The Sugar on Snow party provides families a chance to learn about the maple sugaring production process. You can watch while the sugar maple makers boil the sap in the sugar house, and learn how to tap maple trees to collect sap. You can also walk trails threading through the Center’s 250 acres of conserved forest. Learn more about the Center at http://vt.audubon.org/about-us/green-moun- tain-audubon-center. Huntington is a small town about a 25 minute drive from Burlington, so it is an easy side trip while staying in the area. Skiing, biking, sailing and sampling maple syrup are just a few of the many reasons to vacation in the Green Mountain State. One final benefit to visiting is the ability to schedule in-aircraft recurrent training or PPPP mid-year training with me while you are vacationing here. I invite you to come visit my home state and enjoy everything it has to offer. P
