Location Cathal Brugha Street DIT is located in the heart of Dublin City Centre, set one block back from Dublin’s main thoroughfare, O’Connell Street. Public transport is widely available in the area with Dublin Bus Network right on the doorstep and LUAS (tram) Red Line a five minute walk. The recently completed LUAS (tram) Cross City tram line, extends the LUAS Green Line to provide northbound (O’Connell Street) and southbound (Marlborough Street) lines immediately outside or adjacent to the properties. The immediate environs of the properties will soon benefit from hard landscape upgrading through Phase 1 of Dublin City Councils Public Realm Masterplan. Items such as improved footpaths, roads and primary quality cycle routes are to be introduced in the lifetime of the current Development Plan. The northern end of O’Connell Street, adjacent to Cathal Brugha Street, is earmarked for a station on the proposed Metrolink rail line from Swords to Sandyford Prominent Dublin City landmarks are in close proximity such as the General Post Office (GPO), Gresham Hotel, Ambassador Cinema, Gate Theatre, St. Mary’s (RC), Pro Cathedral, Croke Park and Tyrone House (Department of Education & Skills). In addition, key retail thoroughfares and shopping malls are minutes’ walk from the property such as Henry Street, Jervis Street Shopping Centre, Ilac Shopping Centre, Grafton Street and Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre. Protected Structure Under the Dublin City Development Plan 2016 – 2022 – Record of Protected Structures, Cathal Brugha Street (Dublin College of Catering), 66 – 72 Marlborough Street is recorded as a protected structure under Reference 1331. Town Planning Cathal Brugha Street, Lot 1 and Marlborough Street, Lot 2 are located in the Local Authority Borough of Dublin City Council. The properties are zoned ‘Z5’ – City Centre – To consolidate and facilitate the development of the central area, and to identify, reinforce, and strengthen and protect its civic design, character and dignity under the Dublin City Development Plan 2016 – 2022. Permitted uses to include, but not limited to hotel, office, residential, public house and restaurant. History DIT Cathal Brugha Street, Lot 1 has existed in its current location since 1941. There have been many changes in the seventy seven years since it was officially opened. In 1941, St. Mary’s College of Domestic Science (now Cathal Brugha Street) was established as an integral element of the State’s infrastructure for the education of young females. In 1944 Ireland’s first Diploma in Dietetics course was designed and delivered in the College. In 1951 the College focused its’ attention on the education and training required for the growing Irish tourist industry. Also in 1951 the Department of Hotel and Catering was established and a two-year Diploma in Hotel and Catering Management for males and females was offered in 1952, which subsequently developed into a three-year full-time Diploma in Hotel Management in 1961. Around this time St. Mary’s College of Domestic Science was renamed the College of Catering. In 1973 the Department of Home Sciences emerged offering an array of courses in Child Care and Social Studies in addition to the very popular Home Management Course. The School of Food Science and Environmental Health was formally established in the College in 1982. Student numbers continued to grow and with the College running out of space the extension on Marlborough Street, Lot 2 was constructed to provide modern laboratory facilities for the increasingly technical food science and environmental science disciplines. The College of Catering, which recently celebrated its 75th anniversary, was one of six colleges in Dublin City Centre, which collectively became the Dublin Institute of Technology in 1992. DIT restructured, the building became the main centre for the Faculty of Tourism and Food, which also saw a move of the School of Home and Social Sciences to the Faculty of Applied Arts. The college adjoins the Gresham Hotel Another landmark building in Dublin city centre, Cathal Brugha Street College, is to be offered for sale a week after the adjoining Gresham Hotel was launched on the international market by Nama. The college trained thousands of chefs and hotel managers over the years and is due to celebrate its 75th anniversary this year. The sale comes as the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) pushes ahead with plans to relocate the Cathal Brugha Street College and students from five other campus sites in the city centre to its new campus being developed at Grangegorman. Killian O’Higgins of WK Nowlan Real Estate Advisers is quoting €15-€20 million for the iconic college building off O’Connell Street which includes two properties – the original early 1940s art deco style building fronting on to Cathal Brugha Street, Marlborough Street and Thomas Lane and a connected 1990s building opening on to Marlborough Street. Though each building has its own independent access they are linked at ground and first floor levels via a six-storey building of which the remaining upper floors form part of the Gresham Hotel. DIT and Grangegorman Development Agency plan to offer the college for sale in one or two lots with a combined floor area of 10,761sq m (115,716sq ft).

Eileen Deegan Bsc in Environmental Health School of Food Science and Environmental Health, College of Sciences and Health, Dublin Institute of Technology, 2011 Abstract Cycling is a unique way of travelling and exercising. The Irish Heart Foundation recommends thirty minutes of exercise most days in the week to maintain a healthy heart (IHF, 2008). The introduction of the Dublin-bike scheme by Dublin city Council in connection with JCDecaux on the 13th of September 2009 has encouraged and allowed more people to cycle around the city of Dublin. Since their introduction, Dublin-bikes have grown rapidly in popularity. By the 31st of December 2009 24,016 people had subscribed to the scheme (Dublin City Council, 2009). On the 16th of August 2010, The Irish Times published that the one millionth journey had been taken on a Dublin-bike (Caollaí, É.Ó., 2010). As the Dublin-bike does not issue its users with any form of personal protective equipment (PPE), it is left up to the user to choose if they see the need for their use. Note that between the years 2002 to 2006 there were 427 collisions involving cyclists reported to the Gardaí in Dublin City, of which 11 were fatal (Tracey Solicitors, 2010) The aims and objectives of this study are to: i) carry out observational studies of safety equipment used by both categories of cyclists (Dublin-bike users and owner cyclists); ii) investigate the factors inhibiting use of PPE; iii) investigate sensory awareness/preparedness among cyclists; iv) assess cyclists’ road positioning; v) assess communication between cyclists and other traffic; and vi) assess the responsiveness of cyclists to the behaviour of pedestrians and other vehicles.
