4 An exceptional environment The capital of Wallonia, Namur is a historical city full of character. Nestled at the foot of the Citadel near the confluence of the Meuse and Sambre rivers, the University is situated at the heart of this peaceful atmosphere, conducive to relaxation…and study. A stone’s throw from the station, shopping streets and pedestrian area, it benefits not only from its magnificent natural setting but also from everything city life has to offer: access to cinemas, the theatre and museums, as well as events that the University and its students help to organise.

A rich and varied student life Your time at university is also a unique period of personal development, with cultural activities, sports, festivities and social life. Every year, the Assemblée Générale des Etudiants (AGE), or Students’ Union, puts on various events, and there are several ‘kots à projet’ on campus, where like-minded students can live together and pursue different projects. An international experience Would you like to do an internship or part of your studies abroad? Well you can! UNamur partners a large number of universities in Belgium, Europe, the USA, Japan, Brazil, etc. The Erasmus programme is a great opportunity to see the world – make the most of it! FUCID, an NGO run by the University, also provides the opportunity for internships, study periods or immersion trips to developing countries.

The University of Namur can house 500 students. There is also a well-developed private rental market in the capital of Wallonia, so there are plenty of ways to find accommodation to meet your needs.

University Halls of Residence The Carmel The Carmel is the former Carmelite convent in Jambes (Rue de l’Aurore) which was converted into 31 student rooms for those in search of peace and tranquillity. It is 3.5km from the University (bus stop 50m, with 4 buses per hour going to Namur station, Jambes station 500m), near the Acinapolis cinema, a swimming pool, the ADEPS sports centre and shops. There are shared kitchens with fridge, electric hob and microwave oven, TVs in each lounge area, a table tennis room and a ‘clubhouse’. There is an internet connection in each bedroom, parking for bicycles and cars, a large garden and an orchard. Rent per month: from €310 to €320 (including bills).

The Students’ Social Service provides information regarding student grants from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (FWB), annual tuition fees, student jobs and young people’s rights and obligations, etc. It assesses applications for reductions in tuition fees and provides financial support in the form of interest-free loans (staggered payment of tuition fees, advances of FWB grants, emergency financial assistance, etc.) and non-reimbursable grants. The Service can also provide assistance in case of personal or family problems. It can help you to structure your day-to-day living and provides support during periods of change, as well as assistance to your family, if required.
