GARDENING TIPS FOR SPRING IN SAVANNAH!

To enjoy your cool season annual flowers longer, March is the perfect time to plant! Choose from blooms like geraniums, petunias, snapdragons, and sweet alyssum. Get instant results when you add a pop of cool color to refresh your landscape plants or container plants. Warm season annual color should be planted one to two weeks after any overnight freezes. Select from a variety of gorgeous annuals like marigolds, impatiens, begonias, zinnia, and coleus. As we near the end of the month, watch for options to add like pentas, lantana, purslane, moss , and angelonia as they arrive in stores! Add fullness with size and color in your landscape with blooming shrubs and perennials like or hibiscus. Regardless of what you are planting, always remember to choose plants with similar sunlight requirements, like full sun or partial shade, and water needs. Bloom times can vary which will create an ever-changing garden, all year long.

Annual color needs a well-draining soil. Flower Bed Mix Soil is ideal for your garden area or flower garden. It contains special ingredients that saves and regulates water levels in your soil. It does so by absorbing excessive water when it is plen- tiful, and then releasing that water back into the soil as needed. In addition, Flower Bed Mix lightens soil with expanded shale and coco fiber, composted fines and peat moss that conditions soil. Plus, a slow release fertilizer is included to give your plants a great start.

And don’t forget your lawn! To start spring off right, make sure to mow your established lawn. Mowing will strip away the winter-killed stubble. March is also the time to start feeding your lawn. For your North Texas lawn, you may need to wait until later into the month to let the temperature outside heat up a bit more.

To feed your lawn in Texas, our fertilizer recommendations depend on if your lawn is new or established. The different types of lawns have different needs. First, focus on reviving the soil with Soil Mender® Turf Mender. Work into the soil sur- face to help with planting new grass and it can help repair damage or bare spots in landscapes. Soil Mender® Turf Mender contains a rich blend of nutritional, aged humus mixed with essential supplements to strengthen soil and sustain turf.

And as for your bushes and plants, clean up your plants from the winter season and prune spring blooming shrubs, vines, trees, and more! When you prune spring plants or perennials, you are creating room for new growth. Give your evergreen shrubs a little attention to start the season off fresh. They need to be pruned before new leaves and growth can begin. You can prune as much as 25% of the plant if you trim each of the branches. Spring flowering shrubs and vines can be pruned when the plants finish blooming.

Trees can be pruned as a form of maintenance to remove low hanging and dead branches. Avoid any pruning contact with oaks during spring to lessen disease infestations like oak wilt fungus.

WHERE TO SEE TEXAS BLUBONNETS

Pictures in the bluebonnets are…well, sort of required…for Texas children. I’m pretty sure I’d get my Texas Mom Card revoked if I failed to get yearly pictures of my kids in the bluebonnets. Bluebonnet pictures are amazing for natives and visitors alike and, no matter where you live, they make wonderful Christmas card pictures. But, as beautiful as the pictures are, seeing these blossoms in person is a bazillion times better and a bazillion is like, a lot, y’all. Fields of bluebonnets line the rural highways in Texas, and we have directions to the best spots.

Burnet – The Bluebonnet Capital The best place to start the Highland Lakes Bluebonnet Trail is in Burnet (pronounced burn-it). After all, it’s the Bluebonnet Capital of Texas. Burnet, Texas, is located 60 miles northwest of Austin and directly west of Georgetown on Highway 29. Residents and visitors celebrate the blooming wildflowers at the annual Bluebonnet Festival the second weekend of April.

Marble Falls From Burnet, head south on Highway 281 to Marble Falls. As you approach Marble Falls, look for the Bluebonnet House at 4554 N. US Highway 281. The mid-19th century abandoned home sits in a field of wildflowers and is a popular place to take pictures. While in Marble Falls, make sure to stop by the Blue Bonnet Cafe for a piece of their legendary pies. The Convention and Visitors Bureau has free maps of the Highland Lakes Bluebonnet Trail.

Johnson City and Fredericksburg From Marble Falls, head south on Highway 281 to Johnson City and then west on Highway 290 toward Fredericksburg. Stop at the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site to learn more about where the 37th president was born, lived, died and was buried. In Fredericksburg, shop the stores on Main Street and eat at my favorite German restaurant, the Altdorf Biergarten, at 301 West Main.

Highway 16 from Fredericksburg to Llano When you leave Fredericksburg, head north on Highway 16 to Llano. After about 13 miles, go east on Ranch Road 1323 to Willow City. The Willow City Loop heads north and eventually loops back around to Highway 16 where you can continue your trip toward Llano. The loop is a scenic 13-mile drive filled with wildflowers. However, this land is private, so you are discouraged from stopping to take pictures. If the weather is good, consider a side trip to climb Enchanted Rock.

Washington County County is located on Highway 290 between Austin and Houston. It is home of Brenham and the Bluebell Creamery Tour. Each spring the Brenham Chamber of Commerce conducts a Wildflower Watch and posts bluebonnet sightings on its blog. Washing- ton County is also close to treasure hunter’s mecca Round Top where you can stay overnight at the nation’s only indoor campground Lone Star Glamp Inn.

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Former First Lady and actress Helen Hayes established the National Wildflower Center in 1982. In 1997, the center was renamed the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and moved to 4801 La Crosse Ave. in South Austin. At the center, you can learn about Texas wildflowers, get ideas for your home garden, and walk the trails through wildflowers including bluebonnets. If you want to know where to see Texas Bluebonnets, Brenham has many photo-worthy spots to choose from! If you don’t take a picture of your baby in the Bluebonnets, are you even a Texas parent? Kingsland Kingsland sits on the banks of the River and Lake LBJ. The town’s official slogan is: “Where the rivers flow and bluebonnets grow.” Head to this tiny town’s abandoned rail- road tracks for super bluebonnet pictures.

Brenham Brenham is on the map for ice cream (Blue Bell is made here and if you haven’t tried that, you’re missing out). This small town is the halfway point between Austin and Houston, mak- ing it an easy Texas day trip for bluebonnet pictures. Bluebon- nets historically appear along Highway 290 East and FM 390. Brenham also has a Wildflower Watch website complete with a wildflower Ennis Ennis is known as the “Official Bluebonnet City in Texas.” Located south of , the Official Texas Bluebonnet Trail is said to be the oldest bluebonnet trail in Texas.

The best way to find Bluebonnets? Word of mouth. If you’re in Texas or plan to visit during bluebonnet season, ask a local. The best bluebonnet spot within a short drive of my house is the slope behind Rolling Oaks Mall in North East San Antonio. Texas is a big state (you know what they say!) and there are tons of places to go to get beautiful pictures in the bluebonnets.

And don’t forget the other Texas flowers! Indian blankets, Mexican Hats and Drummond phlox are also pretty and very photo-worthy! -travelingmom.com

Page 10 The Magnolia Mar/Apr/May Spring Edition 2021 BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR!

Follow the “Golden Rule” to be a good neighbor. These are people you are likely to see every day, or at least fairly often. You don’t want to have to lower your head in shame after you know you’ve misbehaved. These tips can include:

1. Observe and respect your neighbor’s personal space. 2. Parking is tight in Savannah, so parking spaces are consid- ered prime real estate! If you can’t park in your garage, please park in your driveway or in front of YOUR house! 3. If you have an issue with a neighbor, go directly to that person and discuss it in an adult manner. Don’t call the cops unless you are threatened. 4. Not everyone is a dog or cat lover, so show responsibility for your pets. Keep them off the neighbor’s lawn and pick up after them. Remember with Covid-19, many people are working from home and need their quiet time. Please be mindful of your dog(s) barking during the day, as well as the eveninig and night hours. 5. If you and a neighbor have a misunderstanding, make an extra effort to make things right by shaking hands (once the pandemic is under control) and at least being on friendly terms. You don’t have to hang out. A simple wave as you pull into the driveway will do. 6. Your neighborhood has a homeowners association, know the rules and follow them. 7. Keep your lawn and your home in good shape. Remember, it not only affects your home value, but that of your neighbors, and the community in general. 8. Parties can be great fun, but depending on the regularity, and the lateness, they can become an issue for your neighbors. Plesae keep that in mind before planning any big events. Try to give your neighbors a heads up so that they are prepared. 9. Be nice! Treat people around you the way that you would like to be treated, and we should all be able to get along!
