This Neurosurgery Department is oldest in Punjab and being leader of Neurosurgery in Pakistan for last 50 years, has contributed enormously to development of Neurosurgery and Public sector service. The clinical work is divided among three independently functioning Neurosurgery Units. Every year we attract the highest number of postgraduate trainees and Senior Registrars. This indeed is the most sought after professorial position in the country. I take pride in teaching and training postgraduates, Senior Registrars and junior Consultants while at the same time keeping myself updated all the time through National and international workshops, meetings and conferences. This means regular didactic teaching rounds, journal club, morbidity & mortality meetings, development of SOPs, Surgical Audit, pre- operative demonstration of surgical technique in skill laboratory, demonstration of new neurosurgical techniques, innovation and keen supervision during operative procedures. My job is to ensure conducive environment to execute above activities which is reflected by our personal “STICH SKILL Lab” and library with indexed journals and Audio visual aids. I also supervise research projects of 25 postgraduates working with me, ensuring that each one not only gets a new and previously untouched topic but also facilities and environment for timely execution. I also represent my Department both at National and International levels as office bearer of Pakistan Society of Neurosurgeons, speaker, Examiner, instructor, chairing a scientific session, faculty member and as a collaborator with international research trials (STICHII & CRASHTrial UK) My job also includes inculcating qualities of hard work, punctuality and professional ethics among my trainees and be a role model for them. My job is to have futuristic vision and interaction with Government and university in advisory capacity to bring Neurosurgery services (academics, research and clinical care) at par with international standards . FUTURE PLANS I envisage to introduce sub-specialty practice in Neurosurgery for ultimate patient care. My passion is to train upcoming consultants in “Minimally Invasive and Endoscopic Surgery” as our country lacks in this field. The PINS will be the ideal place for establishing “The National Centre for Neuromodulation” in Pakistan and the pioneering Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery has already been started at Lahore General Hospital at my Department. I also plan to start DBS for other indications like uncontrolled depression and severe cancer pain, which is not being offered anywhere in this region.
