Ever since we began our ABL program, we have been searching for a way to bring our participants together. Up until now, that was only possible when participants attended a life skills class or some other event as part of the program. Because the participants are scattered across multiple developments, their interaction is fleeting. Recently, we developed a plan that will bring a large group of participants together to live and share experiences within a dynamic community environment. The benefits, to the participants and the ABL program, are likely to be significant. Curtis Apartments, a state-funded public housing TRINITY community, has a group of 54 apartments that are some- development & management what isolated from the larger development. The concept Third Annual Awards is simple: Fill all 54 apartments with participants in ABL who are receiving case management services. By concen- trating participants in one area, we hope to: • Create a cohort of like-minded residents, all working to achieve self-sufficiency. Every study relative to self-suffi- ciency indicates there are significant advantages to bring- ing people together in close proximity so they can share their struggles and celebrate their successes. • Provide our family-life coaches with an opportunity to create group activities that take advantage of the close proximity of residents in the program. For example, the coaches might schedule rotating pot luck dinner dis- cussions or host activities for younger children of these families all right in this smaller community. • Give our coaches more time to work with the partic- ipants in the program by eliminating time spent traveling from one location to another. While many elected officials have been reluctant to publicly support our program, the overwhelming response COLLEGE of average citizens has been off the charts. Washington DC 20240 Dear Secretary Bernhardt, We are deeply dismayed and disappointed with the Department of the Interior's recent decision to disestablish and take lands out of trust for the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe on March 27, 2020. Not since the mid-twentieth century has an Interior Secretary taken action to disestablish a reservation. This outrageous decision comes as we mark 400 years since the arrival of the Pilgrims in 1620 and recognize the People of the First Light who inhabited these shores for centuries before contact. The Department’s capricious action brings shame to your office and to our nation. Your decision was cruel and it was unnecessary. You were under no court order to take the Wampanoag land out of trust. Further, litigation to uphold the Mashpee Wampanoag’s status as a tribe eligible for the benefits of the Indian Reorganization Act is ongoing. Your intervention was without merit and completely unnecessary. The fact that the Department made this announcement on a Friday afternoon in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrates a callous disregard for human decency. Mashpee Wampanoag leaders were focused on protecting members of their tribe, mobilizing health care resources, and executing response plans when they received your ill-timed announcement. As you are well aware, the Department of the Interior holds a federal trust responsibility to tribes, which includes the protection of Native American lands.
