October 21 - November 4, 2009 www.northcoastvoice.com • (440) 415-0999 15 T he Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, (pronounced SOW- ain) when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter. To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities.During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other’s fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter. 16 www.northcoastvoice.com • (440) 415-0999 October 21 - November 4, 2009 The holiday that we know as Halloween fires and dancing and, of course, plenty of holiday that promoted a form of lunacy, it today bares little resemblance to its origins. mead. had a much deeper and serious meaning. Samhain was, and still is, considered to be a very mystical and magical time that was ‘between’ the seasons and the years. The veil between the worlds was and still is considered to be the thinnest at this time of year, and therefore the perfect time to find out what the new year will bring, as well as the time to delve into the past to help solve any unresolved issues. Samhain lasted for three days in the old times and these three days were considered the time of “no time”. It was during the days of ‘no time’ that people were allowed to do things that normally was frowned upon by the highly structured society of the Celts. This was where the tradition of ‘trick or treat’ came from. The children would go from dwelling to dwelling knocking on the doors asking for food or treats of some kind, and if the those who dwelt within did not oblige, they just might find themselves at the receiving end of a possibly rather nasty trick. Adults would indulge in shenanigans like taking someone’s livestock and moving them to a different field without telling the owner of the livestock, or tearing down the gates to the corral that held a particular farmer’s horses, cows, or pigs and allowing the animals to get away. It can also shrink the fingerboards ever so slightly as to lift or push the fret a very small amount from its fret slot, causing it also to buzz in certain areas. Now I know that this movement is very minor and probably not even measurable, but it does occur and can cause havoc on the playability of an instrument. There are a variety of different humidifier systems out there that can help combat this problem. Some of course can be the whole house types that can be fitted directly to your houses heating and cooling system or even as simple as a small plastic bag with a small piece of sponge with some slits cut into it that has some water in it that can naturally release some moisture back into the instrument. I’m not talking about drenching a sponge with water and throwing into a sandwich bag and then putting it into your guitar. But to lightly water the sponge and then squeeze most of the water out and then put it into a resealable “ziplock” bag with some very small cuts in it that will leave an avenue for the moisture to release itself into the guitar. Just gently place it in the sound hole and try to suspend it so that it’s not setting directly on to the top or back of the guitar. This can easily be done by attaching a cheap “Bic” pen to the bag and clipping it on to the strings in a way that suspends the bag inside the guitar. It can’t just be me… someone else has had behind one of these annoying disgusting to notice that lately there has been a whole people. All I can figure is that they must have slew of drivers out there that have this nasty the dreaded “Speed Limit Sign Blindness habit of driving 10 to 15 miles an hour LESS Disease!” than the speed limit! Then again these same obnoxious citizens I mean come on now… 30 miles an hour in a will sit at a green light until it turns yellow, 55 mile an hour zone? And you can’t pass and then slither through the intersection them because there is always a double leaving me sitting at… you guessed it… yellow line, or a curve, or a whole line of another red light! traffic coming the other way, which are also following a bone head going 30 in a 55! “BEEP-BEEP-HONK-HONK! WHAT THE HELL THE LIGHIT IS GREEN… LITTLE They don’t just do this in a 55 mile an hour PEDDLE NEXT TO THE HUMP… STEP zone either… in a 45 they go 30; in a 35 ON IT! they go 25! They brake for any and all curves, leaves blowing across the road, and I just don’t get it! my favorite… road kill! Then while sitting at This of course gets me to a whole new level the second red light, I of verbal road rage! noticed a lady standing by the “BEEP-BEEP-HONK-HONK! OH COME road holding a ON NOW YOU CAN’T KILL IT AGAIN! sign that said: BESIDES IT’S ON THE DOUBLE “HUNGRY, YELLOW LINE, ANYTHING WILL IT WON’T BITE HELP! GOD BLESS YOUR TIRES… YOU!” IT’S DEAD! Then a lady and a little girl walked up GET A to her and handed her something, MOVE money no doubt, and she gave them a ON!” hug then they walked to their car.

To top it I just don’t get it! all off these morons will go out of their way to pull out in Feeling sympathetic I thought to myself: front of me, even when there are no cars “This shouldn’t be happening… this is behind me for miles! America for crying out loud!” My wallet is empty, as usual, so I can’t help her today, “BEEP-BEEP-HONK-HONK! WHAT THE maybe next time. HELL BUDDY YOU COULDN’T WAIT 5 SECONDS TO GET BEHIND ME?” Then I hear an annoying sound… X Then it all starts again… waiting for a “BEEP-BEEP-HONK-HONK! WHAT THE chance to get around them, braking for HELL BUDDY… THE LIGHIT’S BEEN curves, blowing leaves, and road kill! GREEN TWICE NOW… LITTLE PEDDLE NEXT TO THE HUMP… STEP ON IT! “BEEP-BEEP HONK-HONK! YOU JUST PASSED THE SPEED LIMIT SIGN! STEP What the… “OH NO… NO… I’ve become ON IT! one of… of… THEM!”
