Cambridge English Resources Booklet Online resources guide Cambridge English exams in 2021 Dear colleague, We would like to thank you for your efforts during 2020. We know it has been a test for many things: our creativity, our resilience, how hard we can work for our learners. Nevertheless, in many cases, it was not a year in which we were able to test our students’ levels of English as we normally do. 2021 will be, we hope, the year of going back to (a new) normal, and at Cambridge Assessment English we want to be part of that transition with you: that is why we want you to know that we will continue to conduct exam sessions during 2021 (as long as COVID-19 regulations don’t change and allow us to do so), with the same strict safety protocols which have been approved and followed in 2020. We will continue to offer flexibility in our computer-based and paper-based sessions as well, so you have more options. Your Cambridge English Exams Centre will work with you to find the best options and strategies, and will facilitate the means for your students to sit for their certifications. We have also been busy expanding our range of free resources to support teaching and exam preparation. We have crafted contents for the digital classroom, preparation plans for all our exams, guides for students to work on exam preparation on their own, and more! Please, navigate through this pack to learn more about each resource. Finally, a very exciting piece of news we cannot wait to share with you: Cambridge Assessment (which encompasses both Cambridge English and Cambridge International Education) and Cambridge University Press will become a single organisation this year. We will join forces to bring you and your learners the best learning and assessment solutions, creating more and better synergies as a stronger global company. We will be sharing more information later in the year, stay tuned for news! Last year has been a tough test, but you have chosen us as your partners for testing and nothing matters more to us than honoring your choice: we are here for you more than ever, and we will continue to bring you tools to get through this and to help your students continue to learn English and prove their skills to the world. Revising the A2 Key and B1 Preliminary Writing exam Anthi Panagiotopoulou Assessment, Cambridge Assessment English James Lambie Assessment, Cambridge Assessment English Kevin Y F Cheung Research and Thought Leadership, Cambridge Assessment English ©UCLES 2019 CAMBRIDGE ASSESSMENT ENGLISH – RESEARCH NOTES | 1 CONTENTS Introduction 3 Key: What has changed and why? 3 Preliminary: what has changed and why? 6 How were the changes received? 9 What is the expected impact on teaching 11 and learning? Conclusion 11 References 11 2 | CAMBRIDGE ASSESSMENT ENGLISH – RESEARCH NOTES ©UCLES 2019 Introduction The revised A2 Key, A2 Key for Schools, B1 Preliminary and B1 Preliminary for Schools will be introduced in 2020. 1 The major drivers behind changes to the assessment of writing for these Cambridge English Qualifications were to ensure the Writing test constructs remain fit for purpose, and to better support upward certification, which was introduced in 2011. In the pre-revision Key exam, writing was assessed as part of the Reading and Writing papers, and performance for these two skills was reported together. Candidates were asked to produce little of their own writing, both in Key and Key for Schools. The most noticeable change to how writing will be assessed post-revision is the reporting of Writing scores separately from scores for reading. For Preliminary, Reading and Writing will be separated into two distinct papers. Key will also report Reading and Writing scores separately, but will continue to combine the tasks in a single paper for practical purposes. This approach aligns Key and Preliminary more closely with other Cambridge English Qualifications, such as B2 First (Lim 2015), increases the proportion of testing that focuses on writing and provides more information about a candidate’s writing performance.
