BIG CAP NEEDS FLY SO HIGH=S INJURY MINOR, BUT ENOUGH TO MISS OAKS by Bill Finley MAJOR OVERHAUL A relieved trainer Shug McGaughey reported Sunday that his filly Fly So High (Malibu Moon) was not seriously injured after being vanned off following a victory in the GII Davona Dale S. and he hopes to have her back on track shortly. There were some anxious moments for McGaughey and the Phipps Stable Saturday after the >TDN Rising Star= crossed the wire three lengths in front in what was her stakes debut. Afterward, jockey Jose Ortiz dismounted the filly and she was vanned back to the barn. "She cooled out sound yesterday and we sent her back to Payson Park and she seems to be fine this morning," McGaughey said Sunday. "She seems to have a tweak in her upper suspensory in her left front. We might have to give her a little time, but it won=t be a problem." The Week in Review, by Bill Finley PAUL BASQUIN Q&A It barely created a stir, but the news that broke last week that Emmanuel Roussel catches up with French pinhooker and consignor Paul Basquin. Click or tap here to go straight to TDN Pavel (Creative Cause) was bypassing Saturday=s GI Santa Anita Europe. H. to run in the G1 Dubai World Cup was, in fact, significant. The Big >Cap, one of the great, traditional races in the sport, has been decimated by the Dubai World Cup and Santa Anita officials have no doubt grown used to losing the biggest of the big guns to the lure of Dubai=s riches. But when you start losing horses like Pavel, it=s time to panic. His biggest career win came in the GIII Smarty Jones S. at Parx and he was fourth in his last two starts, the GI Malibu S. and the GII San Pasqual S. He=s a nice enough horse, but he=s not an elite horse. And the Big Cap couldn=t get him, even though he may well have been the favorite in the race. A race, by the way, that has seen its purse slashed down from $1 million to $600,000. So far as popularity and prestige go, races do in fact come and go. But this one is different. The Santa Anita H. is iconic and it=s sad to see what has happened to it. This is a race that has been won by Seabiscuit, Round Table, Affirmed, Spectacular Bid, John Henry (twice), Alysheba, Tiznow. In its glory days, there was no bigger race in America. Now, it=s starting to look like a race in serious jeopardy of being downgraded to a Grade II. Santa Anita can=t allow that to happen. Ramsey is so driven to win the Barbados race, which is a huge event in the Carribean nation, but carries a purse of just $107,000 (US), that he sent two horses that, by his own admission, should have been running in much richer races in the U.S. As expected, Ramsey won his third Gold Cup as Sir Dudley Digges (Gio Ponti), the 2016 Queen=s Plate winner, got the job done, defeating stablemate Shining Copper (Aragorn {Ire}). It was a bit of a surprise that Sir Dudley Digges beat Shining Copper, as the latter was considered the better of the two as he was on a three-race winning streak, which included the GIII River City H. and the GII Fort Lauderdale S. FAIR START TO INGLIS MELBOURNE TDN Q&A WITH A pair of A$400,000 colts headed the opening session of the four-day Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale on Sunday. Day PAUL BASQUIN one, which also included a Blue Riband session of 39 yearlings, posted a set of returns broadly in line with 2017 with 116 of the 145 (80%) offered yearlings selling for a total of A$14,648,000 (+6.5%). The combined average for the two sessions came to A$126,276 (+2%), while the median settled at A$110,000, the same as the corresponding day last year. These figures left Inglis Victorian Bloodstock Manager Simon Vivian optimistic for the next few days at Oaklands Junction. AIt was a largely predictable day, on par with this time last year and there are still a lot of very good horses from very good stallions to enter the ring,@ Vivian said. AWe would obviously like to see the clearance rate improve over the coming days, but I=m extremely confident that will be the case as there is a lot of great stock still to be offered. The average of over $126,000 is pleasing, knowing what is being offered over the coming days.@ Cont. p4 Paul Basquin at Arqana | Zuzanna Lupa

TDN: What made you choose to set up your organisation so far away from Paris and Normandy, near the Pyrenees, back in 2001?

PB: I was a qualified agricultural engineer with a passion for horseracing, but I had to find a good way to start my own business in that world, since I had absolutely no family link in racing, apart from our visits to Pau racecourse when I was a child. I was born in the Southwest and it seemed like a good spot at the time. The land was cheap and yet very rich, the Southwest was taking off as a training region with Pau horses winning everywhere. La Teste and Royan have thrived too since then. Also, the winter is milder. It allows you to get your horses ready earlier. TDN: What's in store at Saubouas for the next breeze-up sales in France?

PB: I have about 10 colts and fillies for the Osarus breeze-up [Apr. 25], and then nine for the Arqana Sale [May 11-12]. In the Osarus lot, we have a very nice, precocious colt by Dabirsim (Fr) who has a lovely action on the gallops, and also a Zoffany (Ire) filly who is pleasing me in her work. TDN Q&A With Paul Basquin Cont. TDN: Do you do all the pinhooking yourself and what do you look for in yearlings when buying?

PB: I buy all the yearlings on my own and I look for pretty much what everybody in this business is looking for: a good action, a sound pedigree, mostly proven sires, as I said, and some scope in the conformation of the yearlings, so that there's some room for improvement. This how I picked Le Brivido (Fr), Straight Right (Fr) and Vue Fantastique (Fr), who did so well last year.
