The rear axle is Jaguar Mk4, the engine is Triumph 2500 TC and the gearbox is Triumph 4 speed with o/drive. The body is a combination of Singer Sports and hand-fabricated while the radiator is from a 20s Bean with a TR6 radiator tucked into the hollowed-out honeycomb core. The obvious aspects of the paint job are under the front windows and above the rear guards where the paint follows the line of the chrome but not right on it.

There are no known colour photos of the Lord’s Mountbatten-split car. This photo, retouched by an artist from Ford Avenue Productions, is accepted by experts as a reasonable facsimile of the duck-egg blue. As you know, black is black. There are only 6,557,341 known variants of black paint.

Annette and Chris Kinney would have had the One Point Five but it’d lost all its brakes somewhere between the shed and the back door. And Sue Murphy advised that Eleanor was a bit noisy so she’d been left in the shed too.

We drove on not-often-travelled roads with Christine Hayes driving Herb on his first club run in the lead and Mark as navigator. Christine’s dad Colin wasn’t far behind in the Renault Caravelle with Dot.

Our first stop was at the Para Wirra Reservoir to walk the Whispering Wall. Carmen Friedrichs gave it a good test. It still works.

The Riley Motor Club of SA e.Crank - April/May 2021 Page 21 We gathered on the grass under the trees for lunch and Rileys from inside the Gallery Photo: Leigh Johnson admired the awesome outlook.

After lunch we took a guided tour taking in the potting shed and the more-important car sheds. Susanna showed us how things were made and Mark opened up the RM for inspection. Its gearbox was still on the bench awaiting further attention from the mechanic who was otherwise occupied with vintage.

Their MG was also uncovered. There was an attempt to listen to its lovely note but it wasn’t having any of it.

While Sue Murphy and Rob Revitt headed back via Angaston others travelled back through Keyneton and Springton.

Lee and Carmen with Carmen’s sister aboard stopped there to visit their other sister while Christine and Mark turned right and we went straight on.

The Riley Motor Club of South Australia is one of six Riley clubs in Australia. There are other Riley clubs in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT and Western Australia. We have around 100 members across South Australia with Rileys spanning the 1920s to the 1960s.

We meet monthly (but not in January) on the Fourth Thursday of the month at 7.30pm at Shannons 863-865 South Road, Clarence Gardens. And every month we take our Rileys out for a run somewhere. Classic cars were made for cruising.
