INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MASCULINITIES Engaging Men and Boys for

Thursday March 5 through Sunday March 8, 2015 The Roosevelt Hotel, New York City

WELCOME TO THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MASCULINITIES!

WELCOME TO NEW YORK CITY! A MESSAGE FROM THE CONFERENCE ORGANIZERS

Welcome to New York City and the International Conference on Masculinities: Engaging Men and Boys for Gender Equality! We are thrilled to welcome you. The Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities at Stony Brook University is delighted to be hosting this conference, partnered with the American Men’s Studies Association, MenEngage and Man Up.

That partnership speaks to the work we will do over the next few days – and in the years to come. MenEngage is a coalition of hundreds of NGOs around the world working to engage men and boys for gender equality around issues as diverse as HIV risk reduction, boys development, , supporting women’s reproductive health and rights, and supporting new expressions of fatherhood. Man Up is a global initiative encouraging youth leaders to work to end violence against women. And AMSA is a network of researchers and scholars eager to engage with activists and to promote research that can foster change.

The Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities is an organization dedicated to fostering that conversation between and among researchers, activists, and clinicians whose work all points to engaging men and boys for gender equality. Whether as therapists and social workers, as empirical researchers, or activists in NGOs and other organizations, we seek to engage men and boys because, we believe, that we cannot fully empower women and without engaging boys and men.

Together with our partners we have organized four amazing days of workshops, presentations, panels, and entertainment. But we could not have done this without your work, the work that you will discuss this weekend.

We look forward to an inspiring, challenging, and politically engaging and enriching few days together – to inspire all of us to continue to contribute to the struggle for gender equality around the world.

3 A MESSAGE FROM OUR CONFERENCE PARTNERS

From MenEngage and Promundo:

On behalf of MenEngage and Promundo, we’re thrilled to be a part of the International Conference on Masculinities. From the Global MenEngage Symposium held in November 2014 in Delhi, to UN Women launching He-for-She, to the thousands of blogs, articles, talk shows and studies, the field of study, program development and activism around men and masculinities has never been so visible and so vast. This means that the pressure is on us at the conference to share, to exchange, and to keep the focus on ending --on gender equality and true social justice. We are here paying attention to how masculinities are constructed, and the harm such constructions too often cause, because of the pioneering work of the . Let us keep that standard and that common history foremost in our minds as we lend our collective voices to the cause of the 59th Commission on the Status of Women that will start the day our conference ends. As the UN and countries around the world turn their attention to reviewing the promise of the 1995 Beijing International Conference on Women and to developing a new set of global development goals, the time is right and auspicious to commit ourselves to pushing patriarchy once and for all toward its long and overdue demise.

Gary Barker Co-Chair of the MenEngage Alliance, and International Director of Promundo

From The American Men’s Studies Association:

On behalf of the American Men’s Studies Association (AMSA), I am pleased to welcome you to the International Conference on Masculinities!

As we enter into this conference, I cannot help but reflect on AMSA’s past, in hopes of enriching our present, so that we can ensure a strong future in the critical study of men and masculinities. This year, we are honored to co-sponsor this conference on engaging men and boys in gender equity with the Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities (CSMM), the MenEngage Alliance, and the Man Up Campaign. We are confident that assembling our resources, our talents, and our passions will result in an amazing experience for you, our conference attendees.

Whether you are a scholar, academician, student, or practitioner; new to the field or seasoned; and whether this is your first professional conference or you have attended conferences for 20 years, I believe that you will find something at this conference that satisfies your scholarly appetite. Though your attendance at the conference may be your primary reason for being here, try not to forget that we are in New York City! So, while you are here, please try new things, eat good food, meet new people, and attend sessions that are outside of your educational and professional “box.” I encourage you to continue to generate scholarship, become informed about the world around you, and locate knowledge and resources that will benefit your community and your planet. Your involvement in this conference and in the critical study of men and masculinities is essential to all of us.

As AMSA and the field of men and masculinities continue to grow, I encourage you to join us. If you are not already a member of AMSA, please join us and become active in our efforts. The work of men’s studies scholars is far from over, and as we continue to face issues that directly affect the world in which we live, we will need more stakeholders who are making a difference in the lives of boys and men.

Daphne C. Watkins, PhD, President American Men’s Studies Association

4 From the Man Up Campaign:

On behalf of the Man Up Campaign, and our youth delegate/activists throughout fifty countries, we wholeheartedly welcome you to New York City for the largest conference in North America on manhood and masculinities. It is an especially notable honor to be a co-sponsor with the American Men’s Studies Association, the Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities, and the MenEngage Alliance.

The four days’ duration of the International Conference on Masculinities provides us all with an opportunity, and challenge, to not only share, nurture and advance our respective work but just as importantly find the points of collaboration, synergy. Too often, it is easier to remain in our respective silos of academia, advocacy, policy or service provision. Only through cross-cutting dialogue and true partnership will our collective works have sustainable impact.

Further, we must continue to find innovative ways of understanding, and engaging ALL men, not just those from communities or spaces we find closest to our own perspectives, or comfort levels. By not including the voices of children and youth, members of the faith-based community, military personnel, the LGBTQ community, or government, we only stifle the journey towards deeper understanding of manhood and masculinities.

All of us stand on the shoulders of women and men who planted the seeds of this conference, and the many which came before it, to create and evolve the field of gender research. Each day we are together during the International Conference on Masculinities, let us honor them by respectfully challenging and affirming our work in order to elevate the field as a whole. This moment in our histories is a pivotal one and demands nothing less. The stakes are too high not to do so.
