STRIPES has taken cues from the community’s heritage, integrating the energy and culture of urban living into its foundation.

Take a stroll around the neighbourhood, immerse yourself in both past and present, as you explore family owned businesses that have been around for decades.

LOKE MANSION

The name Loke Yew (inset) is almost synonymous with Kuala Lumpur. He was a well-known business man and philanthropist who found his riches from tin mining, and played a significant role in the growth Kuala Lumpur in the 1900s. The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur was originally owned and built by the Loke Yew Foundation, under the care of his youngest son, Loke Wan Tho – while the land area where the Hotel Stripes Kuala Lumpur stands todays was once owned by Mr Loke Yew!

Not very far from the Hotel Stripes Kuala Lumpur, around a 10-minute walk away, you will find the Loke Mansion – the final residence of the Loke Yew. The building was built by Loke Yew in 1892 and took nearly 12 years to complete. It was part of a former sprawling 11-acre (4.5 ha) Loke Estate. Loke Yew made sure his mansion became one of the most prestigious residences in Asia and was reputedly the first residence in Malaya to receive electricity. His family lived on in the mansion until the 1930s.

The Loke Mansion today has been renovated and restored in 2007 and is currently leased by the law firm Cheang and Ariff.
