He loved poetry and literature, he was a dreamer; inventive, original, full of ideas, and full of music that often seems to come from another more vivid and more magical world than our own. Despite a short period as a law student, by 1830 Schumann had decided to devote himself to a musical career, studying the piano with Friedrich Wieck, who vowed to transform him into a virtuoso pianist. -

He has composed prolifically in most genres including opera, orchestral, chamber and vocal works. PAGANINI 24 CAPRICES FOR SOLO VIOLIN ILYA GRINGOLTS NICCOLÒ PAGANINI (1782 – 1840) You were only sixteen years old when you won the International Violin Competition ‘Premio Paganini’, during which you were awarded two additional prizes – one 24 Caprices for solo violin, Op.1 as the youngest ever competitor to win, and another for the best interpretation of the Caprices. Fifteen years on, has your approach towards his famous set 1 No.1 in E major: Andante 2:12 of études changed? 2 No.2 in B minor: Moderato 3:11 3 No.3 in E minor: Sostenuto – Presto – Sostenuto 3:33 I suppose my approach has changed with me! SCANDINAVIAN, FINNISH & BALTIC CONCERTOS From the 19th Century to the Present A Discography of CDs and LPs Prepared by Michael Herman Jean Sibelius (1865-1957, Finland) Born in Hämeenlinna, Häme Province. Slated for a career in law, he left the University of Helsingfors (now Helsinki) to study music at the Helsingfors Conservatory (now the Sibelius Academy). His teachers were Martin Wegelius for composition and Mitrofan Vasiliev and Hermann Csilag. Sibelius continued his education in Berlin studying counterpoint and fugue with Albert Becker and in Vienna for composition and orchestration with Robert Fuchs and Karl Goldmark. He initially aimed at being a violin virtuoso but composition soon displaced that earlier ambition and he went on to take his place as one of the world's greatest composer who not only had fame in his own time but whose music lives on without any abatement. He composed a vast amount of music in various genres from opera to keyboard pieces, but his orchestral music, especially his Symphonies, Violin Concerto, Tone Poems and Suites, have made his name synonymous with Finnish music. Much speculation and literature revolves around Sibelius so-called "Symphony No. 8." Whether he actually wrote it and destroyed it or never wrote it all seems less important than the fact that no such work now exists. He graduated from Alma-Ata (now Almaty) State Conservatory where he studied composition with Yevgeny Brusilovsky. He continued his studies at the Moscow Conservatory with Genrikh Litinsky and then joined the faculty of the Alma-Ata Conservatory. His work mixes elements of classical and Kazakh musical styles. He has composed operas, orchestral and choral music, including a Trumpet Concerto (1982). He composed in various genres but concentrated on orchestral, chamber and solo instrumental works and produced a lot of music suitable for performance by children and teenagers. His Piano Concertos Nos. 3 (1973) and 4 (1977) and 4 Pieces for 2 Violins and String Orchestra (1964) have not been recorded. Ilya Gringolts Violin
Ilya Gringolts Violin Despite his youth, Ilya Gringolts can already look back on sixteen extraordinarily successful years in his violinist career. His inquisitiveness regarding new musical challenges has shown him to be an outstanding musical personality. After studying violin and composition in Saint Petersburg with Tatiana Liberova and Jeanna Metallidi, he attended the Juilliard School of Music where he studied with Itzhak Perlman. In 1998 he won the International Violin Competition Premio Paganini, as the youngest first prize winner in the history of the competition. As a soloist he devotes himself particularly to contemporary and seldom played works. He has premiered compositions by Peter Maxwell Davies, Augusta Read Thomas, Christophe Bertrand and Michael Jarrell. In addition, he is interested in historical performance practice. At the Verbier Festival in summer 2010, he played the complete cycle of the Bach Sonatas on a baroque violin, accompanied by Masaaki Suzuki. He is also first violinist of the Gringolts Quartet, which he founded in 2008. In the 2014/15 season Ilya Gringolts will again perform at prestigious concert halls such as Musikverein in Vienna, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and Wigmore Hall in London. As a soloist he has been invited to perform with the orchestra of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Copenhagen Philharmonic, Adelaide Symphony and Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom he will also record the violin concerto of the New Zealander composer Ross Harris. In the past years, Ilya Gringolts has performed with leading orchestras around the world, such as the Chicago Symphony, London Philharmonic, Saint Petersburg Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Melbourne Symphony, NHK Symphony, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Birmingham Symphony, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, BBC Symphony, Sao Paulo Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic, Hallé Orchestra and both orchestras of SWR.
