Capitol District Cardinal District "We lost half of our Scouts to a troop 5 miles away. I saw one of Crater District my old Scouts in the grocery store, buying food for a Rivers District backpacking trip. He said they take 'epic' trips in his new troop. Exploring He's having a great time. If only I'd gone to UP3 instead of Eagles Nest staying at home that night to clip my toenails." Honors & Memorials Scout Shop Notes "The tube sock sale was a huge flop last year when our Chinese tube sock supplier sent us hot pink socks and wouldn't take them back. My garage is still filled with boxes of soxes. I've run out of sock-based crafts for den meetings. With no money in the pack account, we had to cancel our . If only I'd gone to UP3 last year and learned foolproof ways to conduct product sales, maybe I wouldn't be in this hot pink nightmare today."

"My Scoutmaster never got the council calendar prior to our troop program planning conference. We picked a week to go to summer camp, and published our unit calendar. When we went to register for camp in late winter, we discovered that we'd picked the week after Brady Saunders ends! The only camp we could find open that week was in the Okefenokee Swamp. It was a week of mosquitoes, sweat, and misery. They fed us a steady diet of partially cooked beans. An alligator ate my sneakers. If only we'd gotten the council calendar at UP3, we'd be back at Camp T. Brady Saunders, riding that awesome waterslide and climbing on the iceberg."

The place to get ideas and wise advice is at a UP3. Available in each district, all UP3 events will happen during the first two weeks of June, and this year will use a trade show-style format followed by program- specific breakout discussions where you'll be able to hear about everyone's best program successes. There is no fee to attend, and every participant will receive the council calendar for the 2016/2017 program year and a patch for UP3 certification. Every unit in attendance will receive a packet of paper flyers, forms, key information, and their Journey to Excellence ribbon, if they earned one.

To receive the calendar and certification patch, you must register. Register HERE!

Dear Scout Leaders,

It's time to schedule your unit's annual program planning conference! A good annual program calendar will attract more families and Scouts will stay involved longer.

My name is Heather Dunton, the Heart of Virginia Council's Program Support Executive and I am here to help! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what keeps Scouts in the program... they like to have fun, do really cool challenging stuff, go places and learn new things! This is what we call program, and it doesn't just happen by chance. It takes planning and preparation which all starts with your unit's conference. I can also help determine what fundraising needs your unit may have to fund an exciting year of Scouting!

My summer calendar is filling up quickly, so please contact me today to schedule a date to meet with your leaders at your planning conference (if I am not available, we can schedule a visit with your Unit Commissioner or District Executive). You can reach me by email at [email protected] or by calling 804-355-4306. I look forward to helping you!

Second Weekend Saturday, October 14th, 15th and 16th, Camp T. Brady Saunders

Two Wood Badge weekends wrapped up recently with 56 newly trained and motivated Scout leaders. Big thanks go out to the entire Wood Badge staff, especially course director and Scoutmaster Bob Efird and Senior Patrol Leader Lloyd Dunnavant, seen here leading Troop 1 to an activity. The 2017 National Scout Jamboree will be held from July 19 to July 28, 2017. Registration has now gone live at this link: Click here

The Heart of Virginia Council will be putting together six Troops, each comprised of 36 Scouts and 4 adult leaders and one patrol of Venturers. Adults interested in serving on staff at the Jamboree can also register at this link. The Jamboree is held at The Bechtel Family Summit in West Virginia. The Summit is home to the world's largest collection of zip lines, the second largest skateboard park in the country, 36 miles of mountain bike trails, is close to the New River for whitewater rafting and has tons of other outdoor adventures and activities.

Scouters are needed to staff the various activities areas and support areas for the Jamboree. Changes have been made to address the concerns of the 2013 staff: 1. Heated showers will be added to the staff base camp 2. Shuttles from camp sites to activity areas will be provided 3. More flexible programming so Scouts can stay in areas they want to focus on

Merit badge counselor renewal packets were mailed to all currently registered Merit Badge Counselors in April and were due back to the Council Service Center by May 15th.

If you haven't returned yours yet, please do so right away to avoid being dropped. If you did not receive one and believe that you are registered, please contact your District Executive or the Registrar, Valerie Glazier at [email protected].

Albright Scout Reservation is a great site for weekend camping. Situated on 568 acres on Lake Chesdin, it is close and offers three types of camping areas all at NO COST! It has six traditional campsites for car camping each with a shelter, table and latrine nearby. Three sites near the lake offer more of a wilderness experience. There is also a "leave no trace" area and a short backpack trail for a shakedown experience.

In addition there are two picnic pavilions and a chapel area for unit activities! Sites and facilities are free to Heart of Virginia Council units and reservations can be made online at http://hovc.org/camps/albright/.

Scoutreach News

Under the leadership of Ken Branford and Michael Berry, the Scoutreach team held a Fishing Rodeo at Camp Finley Albright on May 14th. It was an exciting day for the 50 Cub and Boy Scouts in attendance. Game and Inland Fishery provided rods for the fisherman. Prizes were awarded and much fun was had by all. Many fish were caught and some delicious meals were had by the overnight campers. Outdoor experiences are the cornerstone and trademark of the Scouting program and it's where the magic of Scouting happens for boys!

District Day Camp

Thank you so much for your patience while our district team has experienced several changes this year. The most important factor for a successful Day Camp is volunteer participation. I know folks are exhausted and it just doesn't seem fair to sacrifice a vacation day or two to "work". It's getting to the point where volunteerism is getting fractured even further into hours, and that isn't a very functional model. I predict this will be the last Day Camp that is structured in this way. Scouting is a professionally guided, volunteer run organization. We are nothing without parents and community members investing their time, talent and treasure in our young people. Most likely next year we will be exploring several weekend camp opportunities, just so we are assured of getting the help we need. An email has been sent out to everyone in Cubs, Scouts and about participation, either as a youth or volunteer, and the link is live and open for registrations on the Council website. Please email any questions to Geoff Angle.

Nominating Committee

The annual District Nominating Committee is forming and accepting nominees for district positions. Among the leadership positions being sought are the following:

Membership Vice-Chairperson Finance Vice-Chairperson Program Vice-Chairperson Camping Promotion Chairperson Popcorn Kernel Asst. Cub Scout Roundtable Commissioner Asst. Boy Scout Roundtable Commissioner

Nominees will be vetted by a select committee and approached on an individual basis regarding their capacity to serve. This is a unique opportunity to have a significant impact on the vision and direction of Huguenot Trail while supporting the overall mission of the Boy Scouts of America: The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

FRIENDS OF SCOUTING

Thank you very much for scheduling the Friends of Scouting presentations and doing your part to insure our district meets our goal! The cooperation of the unit leaders and unit captains in sending out promotional emails and in following up with those that we missed, is getting us dollar by dollar, closer to success!

We have two final phases for making our goal. One is an email campaign going out to the remainder of our families who have not had the opportunity to make a pledge.

Secondly, we will be working with volunteers to solicit local businesses to proudly support Scouts. In exchange for their donation, they will receive a marketing advantage from our constituents; a true win-win, the way it should be!

Our District is currently at $100,525 of our $140,000 goal. As much as 40% of our donations have traditionally come through our families. Please help us meet our goal! District Chairman: Marty Shirilla, 804-436-7289, [email protected] District Commissioner: Freddy Dunn, 804-925-5485 or [email protected] District Executive: Joe Hickey, 804-938-2616, [email protected]

CAMP CARDS

Camp card sales in the Rivers District are going through the roof! Pack 215 is taking the lead as top sellers in the district and could be top 5 in the council. Rivers has matched its 2016 goal and we will be well over our projected goal. Great job by all participating!

Unit Commissioners

Our Unit Commissioner staff have been hard at work getting the much needed visitations and service to our units. There is still a lot to do so, be on the look out for a commissioner to stop by at one of your units' activities. This month the commissioners will be hosting UP3 at roundtable.

GOAL UPDATE

While we struggle with our Family FOS goal, we are doing well in our camp card sales. Popcorn is around the corner! Traditionally our popcorn participation is lackluster, but I am confident this will be our year. We are also working on a small business campaign , so if you know of a Scout friendly business please let me know so I can make a visit.

CAMP-O-REE COOKOUT/CROSSOVER EVENT

This past month, Rivers held is Spring Camp-O-Ree at the Red Oak Nursery. What a wonderful place to camp (my first time). While the weather did get in our way a bit, all survived and had fun. We manufactured a new bridge (more of a ramp) and had the boys touch 11 boards representing points of the in reverse. There was no 12th board. The Arrow of Light Scout had to trust fall into his new Boy Scout unit. Talk about trustworthy! The OA dance team had to cancel due to the weather, but were able to hold for a call out Saturday night during Campfire. There are some great pictures and video of the weekend event on the Rivers District Facebook page. A special thanks to the Hutt Family for allowing us to use their property.

Exploring Opportunities:

As many of you know, Exploring is a unique career exploration program for young men and women ages 14-20. It provides students with an opportunity to learn about a wide variety of career fields and network with professionals already working in those fields. They get hands-on experience to determine whether or not a particular career field is right for them. They also develop valuable networking contacts with professionals working in your selected career fields, and get to know other teenagers and young adults sharing similar interests and aspirations. Exploring can be the first step in identifying career possibilities while having fun in an exciting and informal environment.

This is a rapidly growing program within the Heart of Virginia Council (more than 20% growth each of the last two years.) There are 2 more programs accepting enrollments for the 2016 program year and both have limited slots.

This is a rapidly growing program. If you know of an employer in the area that might be interested in hosting an Exploring Post, please contact Bill Givler at [email protected] or 804-938-2614.

Pack and Troop leaders- Please tell new Scouts and parents which items and uniform parts to purchase. With almost 400 units in our council, the Scout Shop does not know what individual units require or provide.

Per National BSA policy: When purchasing rank and or merit badges, advancement reports must be turned in at time of purchase, including Bobcat and Scout. To purchase replacement patches, you must have the rank card, merit badge or blue card or copy of the Scout's record.

All returns must be made within 30 days, with receipt, and items in original condition. For orders sent to the Scout Shop, please allow 1-2 business days for processing. If you email your order, to ensure we receive it, please use the address [email protected].
