Ohio State Head Coach Chris Holtmann Previews Matchup With Michigan After winning back-to-back games against Northwestern and Indiana, the Ohio State men’s basketball team (14-7, 4-6) will look to win its third in a row against Michigan (13-8, 4-6) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Just one day before the Michigan matchup, Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann spoke to members of the media about the upcoming game. Michigan is a really good team, playing really well. Lot of respect for Michigan first-year head coach Juwan Howard and how him and his staff are doing. Bad luck or bad three-point defense? There’s some of both. But we’ve got to figure out some ways to contest and challenge three-pointers better. Michigan senior guard Zavier Simpson has a lot of great attributes, but I think his best attribute is his brain. His ability to read the defense is phenomenal. Offensively we’ve been pretty good, but our defensive numbers have got to get better. Offensively, we have to lower the amount of turnovers. The Indiana game was a really clean one offensively for us. Our ball movement was really good against Northwestern, too. Our ball movement is better, and part of it was how Indiana played defensively. When you’re in the best league in the country, it’s going to happen. Your biggest concern is how you’re playing. I’m interested to see how guys getting more minutes and changing roles with DJ Carton out will impact us and how they’ll develop through that.

XAVIER BASKETBALL – NEWSLETTER S.E. February 5, 2006 Follow Me By MICHAEL SOKOLOVE Ethics exemplar. And soon to become, in marketing terms, "the Michael Jordan of college coaches," according to his agent, David Falk (who is, yes, Jordan's agent). Krzyzewski (pronounced sha-SHEF-ski) has been doing about 30 corporate speaking gigs a year for about $50,000 a pop. (He plans to cut back on the number of speeches while raising his fee to $100,000.) He is host of an annual conference at Duke's Fuqua School of Business. The university, in an unusual move, put its basketball coach's name on an academic center, the Fuqua/Coach K Center of Leadership & Ethics, and made Krzyzewski an "executive in residence" with the expectation that he will be able to become a professor whenever he stops coaching. In addition, Duke Corporate Education, which consults to businesses, has developed a program that uses Krzyzewski's methods as a teaching tool. PricewaterhouseCoopers has so far sent about 500 senior associates and managers — most of them "partners in the making," as they were described to me — to study Duke basketball in a "metaphoric context" to help them reach personal and professional goals. That irritating American Express commercial is blaring All of this is easy to ridicule because Krzyzewski is, again during the college basketball telecasts. The after all, a mere coach — and in some quarters, scrappy Polish guy from Chicago is standing in front of especially among rival fans in the bitterly competitive his bench, his feet firmly planted on the holy hardwood Atlantic Coast Conference, a reviled one.

  • Renormalizing Individual Performance Metrics for Cultural Heritage Management of Sports Records
Renormalizing individual performance metrics for cultural heritage management of sports records Alexander M. Petersen1 and Orion Penner2 1Management of Complex Systems Department, Ernest and Julio Gallo Management Program, School of Engineering, University of California, Merced, CA 95343 2Chair of Innovation and Intellectual Property Policy, College of Management of Technology, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland. (Dated: April 21, 2020) Individual performance metrics are commonly used to compare players from different eras. However, such cross-era comparison is often biased due to significant changes in success factors underlying player achievement rates (e.g. performance enhancing drugs and modern training regimens). Such historical comparison is more than fodder for casual discussion among sports fans, as it is also an issue of critical importance to the multi- billion dollar professional sport industry and the institutions (e.g. Hall of Fame) charged with preserving sports history and the legacy of outstanding players and achievements. To address this cultural heritage management issue, we report an objective statistical method for renormalizing career achievement metrics, one that is par- ticularly tailored for common seasonal performance metrics, which are often aggregated into summary career metrics – despite the fact that many player careers span different eras. Remarkably, we find that the method applied to comprehensive Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association player data preserves the overall functional form of the distribution of career achievement, both at the season and career level. As such, subsequent re-ranking of the top-50 all-time records in MLB and the NBA using renormalized metrics indicates reordering at the local rank level, as opposed to bulk reordering by era.
