3 How to RIDE SunBus Plan your trip. Use the schedules in this book to plan your trip. For more on how to ride SunBus visit www.sunline.org Wait for the bus. It is best to be at the bus stop a few minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. Check the bus schedule to be sure that the bus serves the stop and that it is traveling in the direction you want to go. As the bus approaches, wave to the Operator. This gives the Operator enough time to stop safely and avoid passing you. Board the bus. Before getting on the bus, verify the route number by checking the sign on the front or side of the bus. Let passengers get off the bus before you board. To make boarding easier, every SunBus is equipped with lifts or ramps for people who have trouble climbing stairs or use a wheelchair. Pay your fare. Please have your exact fare ready before boarding the bus. Operators do not make change. Transfers can also be purchased from the farebox. A transfer is good for two hours of unlimited rides in any direction. For passenger convenience, a Day Pass can be purchased from the farebox. This pass allows unlimited rides for one full day! You can also ride the bus using a 10-Ride Pass or 31-Day Pass. Take a seat. The seats nearest the driver are designated for seniors or the disabled. If you choose to sit in these seats and are not a senior or disabled, be prepared to move if needed. For safety, always remain seated or hold onto the poles when the bus is moving. Get off the bus. Pull the yellow cord above the window or push the vertical strip on the side of the window to signal the bus operator that you want to get off at the next bus stop.

4 Programs

SUNDIAL SunDial provides on-demand curb-to-curb paratransit service to qualifying clients within ¾ of a mile on either side of SunLine’s fixed routes. Please call Customer Service to find out if your destination is within the pick-up and drop-off zones. All persons requesting ADA certification must file an application and provide the documentation necessary to determine eligibility. Applications are available at SunLine Transit Agency in Thousand Palms, via mail by calling Customer Service or online. Eligibility is not based solely on the presence of a disability. Consideration is given to whether and how the disability impairs an individual's mobility.

HALF-FARE PROGRAM SunLine has established a half-fare program based on the Federal Transit Administration’s guidelines. This program is for seniors 60+ years of age or persons with disabilities who are able to ride SunLine’s fixed routes. To qualify for this program, applicants must show proof of age or disability

COACHELLA VALLEY EMPLOYER PASS PROGRAM Federal law* entitles all employers to deduct business expenses of up to $100 per employee per month for the cost of using public transportation. This law allows employers to offer their employees a choice between current or future compensation, and “qualified transportation fringes,” which include transit, vanpool or qualified parking benefits. SunLine can help with transportation challenges your employees face. The Coachella Valley Employer Pass is an incentive program that allows businesses to provide their employees the ability to travel to and from work using SunBus. The pass is valid for 31 consecutive days. To be eligible, businesses must have five (5) or more employees interested in using transit. * Internal Revenue Code Section 132(f)(4) Title IX, Section 910 of TEA-21

5 MOBILITY TRAINING PROGRAM The Mobility Training Program is specialized travel training provided to individuals, including seniors, persons with disabilities and group homes interested in learning how to ride the bus system. This program is provided at no cost. The program goal is to increase customers’ capabilities and flexibility of traveling within the Coachella Valley and to promote independence.

BIKE & BUS SunLine is pleased to offer our riders greater flexibility and more options to get to their destination by combining two popular modes of transportation, the bicycle and the bus. Simply load your bicycle on an easy to use bike rack mounted securely to the front of every SunBus. Remember, you are responsible for loading, securing and unloading your bicycle from the bike rack.

SunBus A Safe Place Destination This black and yellow sign identifies every SunBus and SunDial vehicle as a “Safe Place” site. SunLine Transit Agency provides these 95 mobile Safe Place sites throughout the Coachella Valley. Any at-risk youth age 12 to 17 years can board a transit vehicle and SafeHouse will be contacted to provide them with a safe and secure place to stay. 6 Travel Tips

Drivers may request I.D. upon use of a pass or when customers pay other than an adult full-fare. No smoking or eating. Non-alcoholic drinks in sports bottles or other closed containers ONLY. Shoes and shirts must be worn. No changing of clothes or diapers. Keep your feet off the seats. Fold-up seats and seats directly behind the driver are intended for seniors and passengers with disabilities. Be prepared to move at the driver's request. Be patient while driver secures wheelchairs. Bus may not transport more bikes than rack capacity. Talk to the driver only when boarding or when bus comes to a complete stop. Remain seated when bus is in motion. No standing forward of yellow line while bus is in motion. Hold infants/small children on your lap. Small pets (except service animals) must be secured in cages designed for carrying animals on public transportation. All carry-on items must be kept out of the aisles and must be small enough to fit safely on the customer’s lap. Strollers and shopping carts must be folded and kept out of the aisles. Passengers may bring up to 3 medium-sized packages or grocery bags. Passengers must be able to lift and carry their own packages without assistance from the driver. No bags containing recyclable bottles or cans. No hazardous items. No alcohol, drugs, or weapons of any kind.

7 No graffiti or abuse of seats or windows. No abusive or obscene language or actions. No loud music. Please exit through the rear door. Let bus depart before crossing street. Detours are subject to change at any time. Esto le dará suficiente tiempo para parar y evitar que lo pase. Subirse al autobús. Antes de subirse al autobús, verifique el número de la ruta observando el anuncio en frente o al lado del autobús. Deje que los pasajeros se bajen antes de subirse. SunBus está equipado con rampas para aquellas personas que tienen dificultad en subir escalones y está equipado para transportar sillas de rueda. Pague su tarifa. Por favor tenga la tarifa exacta antes de abordar al autobús. El operador no da cambio. El pase de transborde “Transfer“ también se puede comprar en la caja de tarifa. El “Transfer “ es valido por dos horas de viajes ilimitados en cualquier dirección. SUNDIAL SunDial ofrece servicio de banqueta-a-banqueta dentro ¾ de milla de cualquier lado de las rutas fijas de SunLine para aquellos que califiquen. Llame al Servicio al Pasajero para informarse si su destino está dentro de las zonas de servicio. Todas las personas que soliciten certificación de ADA deben de someter una solicitud y la documentación necesaria para determinar su elegibilidad. La solicitud está disponible en SunLine Transit Agency en Thousand Palms, por correo, llamando al Servicio al Pasajero o a través de nuestra página Web. La elegibilidad no se basa solamente en la incapacidad física. También se considera si la incapacidad impide la movilidad de la persona y en qué manera.

PROGRAMA DE MEDIA TARIFA SunLine ha establecido un programa de media tarifa basado en las guías de Federal Transit Administration. Este programa es para personas de 60+ años o personas con incapacidades que pueden usar las rutas fijas. Para calificar para este programa los solicitantes deben de mostrar comprobante de edad o incapacidad.

PASE DE EMPLEADOR DEL VALLE DE COACHELLA La ley Federal* autoriza a los empleadores a deducir gastos de negocio de hasta $100 por empleado por mes para sufragar el costo de utilizar el transporte público. Esta ley permite a los empleadores que ofrezcan a sus empleados la posibilidad de elegir entre la indemnización actual o futura, y “margen de transporte calificado”, que incluyen el transporte, viaje compartido ó beneficios de estacionamiento calificados. SunLine puede ayudar a sus empleados a que se enfrentan a los desafíos de transportación. El Pase de Empleador del Valle de Coachella es un programa de incentivos que permite a las empresas proporcionar a sus empleados la posibilidad de viajar hacia y desde el trabajo ó ir a cualquier parte, en cualquier dirección que SunBus viaja. 11 PROGRAMA DE ENTRENAMIENTO MOBILIARIO El Programa de Entrenamiento Mobiliario de SunLine consta de entrenamiento especializado para individuos, incluyendo a personas de 60+ años, personas incapacitadas y grupos caseros interesados en aprender como usar el sistema de autobús. El programa se ofrece sin costo. La meta del programa es de aumentar la capacidad y flexibilidad del pasajero para viajar dentro del Valle de Coachella y promover independencia. BICICLETA Y AUTOBÚS SunLine ha combinado dos modos populares de transportación; la bicicleta y el autobús, ofreciendo a sus pasajeros más flexibilidad y más opciones para que lleguen a su destino. Sólo subir su bicicleta al estante para bicicletas ubicado en la parte delantera de cada SunBus. Recuerde que es su responsabilidad de subir, asegurar y bajar su bicicleta del estante.

12 Consejos Viajeros

 Es posible que el Operador le pida una identificación cuando usted use un boleto de SunBus o cuando pague una tarifa que no sea de adulto.  No se permite fumar o comer en el autobús.  No se permiten bebidas con alcohol, las bebidas tienen que estar en botellas deportivas o en envases con tapadera SOLAMENTE.  No se permite andar descalzo o sin camisa.  No se permite cambiar de ropa o pañales.  No suba sus pies en los asientos.  Los asientos que están doblados y los que están directamente detrás del Operador están reservados para las personas mayores de edad e incapacitadas. Esté preparado para moverse cuando el Operador solicite estos asientos.  Mantenga paciencia mientras el Operador asegura las sillas de ruedas.  El autobús no podrá transportar más bicicletas de las que quepan en la rejilla.  Hable con el Operador solamente cuando suba o cuando el autobús pare completamente.  Manténgase sentado mientras el autobús esté en movimiento.  No se pare enfrente de la línea amarilla mientras el autobús esté en movimiento.  Sostenga niños pequeños/recién nacidos en su regazo.  Animales domésticos (excepto animales de servicio) deben ser asegurados en jaulas diseñadas para viajar en el transporte público.  No se permite poner ningún artículo en los pasillos, los artículos deben ser pequeños para caber con seguridad en su regazo.  Mantenga los cochecitos de niños y los carros de compras cerrados y fuera del pasillo.  Los pasajeros pueden traer un máximo de 3 paquetes o bolsas de tamaño mediano de la tienda.  Los pasajeros deben levantar y cargar sus propios paquetes sin ayuda del Operador.  No se permite traer bolsas que contengan botellas o latas reciclables.  No se permite transportar artículos que puedan ser peligrosos.
