HISTORICAL NOTES

The South Perth Methodist Church (Former) was designed by James Hine FRIBA, who qualified as an architect in 1873 at Leominster and Ludlow, . He moved to South Africa in 1881 and to Bathurst, New South Wales, in 1883 where he was art master at the Technical School and Diocesan Architect to the Anglican Church. In 1895, he moved to , where he was responsible for the design of a large number of churches and was involved in church school development, the most important being St Andrews Presbyterian Church in Perth. James Hine is noted for his interest in ‘matters affecting the welfare of Protestant Churches’ and as a member of the masonic fraternity’ . (Battye’s Cyclopedia).

In 1907, Hine won a competition, assessed by Hillson Beasley, to prepare a design for Methodist Ladies College in Claremont, and in 1925 was commissioned to prepare designs for an extension to that building. Between 1913 and 1945, the headmistress of the school was Gertrude Walton, and her husband J P Walton was a stalwart of the Methodist faith in Western Australia.

Hine also designed the South Perth Methodist Church (Former) and the foundation stone was laid by J P Walton on 5 September 1925. The building was constructed by E Allwood.

The South Perth Methodist Church (Former) , now the Uniting Church Hall, is located very close to Wesley College, which is on the opposite (northern) side of Angelo Street. The school did not have a dedicated chapel until after World War II and used this Church up until that time. Rev Dr H R Trenaman was then Minister of the South Perth Methodist Church (Former) .

In 1962, a new Methodist Church was built in Sandgate Street. In 1966, a new manse was approved at No. 4 Hampden Street, with additions approved in 1991. In 1969, a Day Nursery was approved.

HISTORICAL NOTES (cont’d)

On 22 June, 1977, the Congregational Union of Australia, the Methodist Church of Australasia and the Presbyterian Church of Australia joined to become the Uniting Church, so there was a resultant name change for the original Church building which, by that time, was being used as a Church Hall.

In 1993, a new Child Care Centre, estimated at a value of $350,000, was built to the north of the new Uniting Church to replace the former child care facilities. The Centre caters for children aged 0-6 years. The facility was designed by Architekton Architects and Planners. Modifications, designed by Ian Harris Architects, were carried out in 2000. A canvas awning was erected over the playground equipment in 1997. Further awnings were added to the property in 2003 and 2006.

In 2015, the South Perth Methodist Church (Former) celebrated the 90 th anniversary of the laying of its foundation stone.

DESCRIPTION

The South Perth Methodist Church (Former) is a red face brick structure with an elaborate street façade and a cantilevered bracketed porch. The façade has set back buttresses at the corners with matching pilasters and some herringbone pattern brick infill, a stepped brick gable parapet, precast and pressed cement (now painted) render and capping units complete the external materials.

The nave has brick buttressing and is tied with a painted ring beam at the plate. The joinery frames are timber and the roof is two-pitched and clad with Marseilles pattern terra cotta tiles. The ridge tiles are of interest.

The site has been maintained and modified as the needs of the congregation have changed over the years.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

The South Perth Methodist Church (Former), now the Uniting Church Hall, has aesthetic, historic, social and representative cultural heritage significance. It is a fine example of an Inter-War building, with strong Federation Free style influences. It was designed by a well-known architect, James Hine, who also designed Methodist Ladies College in Claremont, in 1907. The South Perth Methodist Church (Former) served the local South Perth Methodist community as well as the Wesley College community prior to the building of a chapel on the school campus after World War II. The building has been used as a church hall since the new Uniting Church was built in 1962. The complex, which includes the Church, Church Hall, a Child Care Centre, Manse and other facilities, performs an important social function for the Uniting Church community in South Perth.
