If you want to know what a Surf Club is like – just rock up to Bilgola on a Sunday morning. It may sound chaotic but it works. The colour from all the different high-vis rashies, the noise and activity is thrilling to watch and especially to be involved.

This is my fifth year as President and I find every season Bilgola has 12 Patrols who cover 142 patrols, each patrol different, from the rescues, surf conditions, competition, averaging 12-13 patrols a season or around 50-60 hours celebrations and farewells. 10 FAREWELLS

Richard “Mr Bean” Crayfourd Richard Crayfourd, a Distinguished Service Member was a long standing and distinguished service member (affectionately known as Mr. Bean). Rich originally joined the club as a nipper parent in 1990 and became an age manager shortly after. He remained an age manager for some years and served on both the senior and junior committees, including the roles as branch delegate, Club Vice President and Hon Secretary. He was an active member of the renovation team which carried out the major extensions to the clubhouse from 2000 to 2002, and has been an enthusiastic support of our club for over 20 years. He later became a level 1 official and officiated at many boat carnivals and was a member of the branch TIPS team.

At his funeral service held at the club, his daughter Emma Crayfourd shared this: “A message from our sponsor. Richard always enjoyed the last word in debate, some things don’t change. The first and most important thing is for recognition of my Rock, my loyal companion, lover and faithful carer, Jenny, she has never failed me through this journey. Second is our two children who both supported me and retained inspiration to keep on keeping on. Bob and Graham and Emma’s partner David have also been wonderful and really appreciated, thank you all. To my surprisingly large group of friends, I Graham Foran, Richard “Mr Bean” Crayfourd & Bob Machar can also say thanks, particularly Bilgola Burglars & work colleagues. I had a good life with few regrets. Make sure you can say the same if you want real peace when it matters, love Richard”

Tony Rollo Bland Bilgola SLSC farewelled Tony ‘Rollo’ Bland in December 2017. Tony joined the club 60 years ago. He achieved his Bronze in 1958, has been Club Treasurer, President and Auditor and was made a Life Member in 1978. He was an excellent swimmer especially in long distance events. The Club had three Bilgola Surf Boats raise their oars and three IRBs on the water while his ashes were spread with his friends and family watching on. During his wake, a pod of dolphins were in the bay and as one of the Life Members was reminiscing five F18s flew past. Tony Rollo Bland (2nd from the left)

On the day of his farewell, club member, John Stone read an “Ode to Rollo”. I first met Rollo when he joined the surf club 60 years ago but I had more quality time with him over the last 6 months than the previous 60 years. We would meet at Bilgola Pool a couple of times a week, Between the two of us, we knew just about every one of the regular swimmers We were two old farts, Rollo with his surgical boot and electric bike from the boot of his car, me with Parkinsons. Rollo would often visit me at home and we would sit for hours over a beer or two discussing current affairs, old friends, family, sailing and Surf Club finances, Marcus’ latest boat…Rats Rugby – he was a Norths Supporter. These were most enjoyable afternoons for me and I hope for him.

12 EXPENSES Our primary goal as a surf lifesaving club is to keep our beach safe for all swimmers and those who visit our shores. It can be costly to maintain our equipment to such a high standard together with providing ongoing training for our members. This year we spent $19,475 on our beach operations, medical, training, maintaining IRB’s, Safety equipment, Board and Skis. With much of this equipment used to save lives the aim is to avoid the risk of equipment failure during a rescue. In addition, the club invested in a new IRB engine.

With our patrolling members visible on our beach during weekends and public holidays many are also competing in Surf Lifesaving competitions at Branch, State and National levels. This year we spent $12,846 on competition costs. This is one area where the club can see tangible results and is an avenue we can encourage and develop a competitive spirit among our members. We should not overlook the efforts of those members who officiate at these competitions to ensure they run smoothly and fairly for all competitors. All of their time and resources are volunteered to make our club even more competitive each year.

Another area of expenditure we see as beneficial has been the continued updates to the clubhouse. This year we spent $54,691 on clubhouse improvements and maintenance. This includes key items like the lighting upgrades and new outside awnings for the clubhouse. The maintenance of our Clubhouse is always ongoing as it’s exposed to the harsh elements of our environment. This work involves many of our club members volunteering their time and resources to get the job completed to such a professional standard. We are very appreciative of their commitment to make it all happen.

NEXT FINANCIAL YEAR With the clubs revenues being consistent over the last two financial years and strong profits being recorded we have put the club in a strong position to ensure we can invest in the best surf lifesaving training and equipment available to our members, their families and our community. We strive to ensure we have adequate facilities and can provide the many competition and social activities for our members and the community to enjoy.

I would like to thank my fellow committee members who made these financial results possible. Without their dedication to growing and maintaining revenues and managing our expenses so diligently we would not have achieved these positive financial results.

REPORT Bilgola SLSC has again been fortunate enough to have the wonderful support of our sponsors to do what we do best, save lives and build community. Blackmores, our major sponsor, were there for us again, enabling us to continue to update valuable equipment, cloth our competitors, officials and nippers, and run our fabulous and very busy club.

Closely associated has been the amazing support from Here are the list of our other awesome sponsors who make it local Billy residents and Blackmores’ Chairman, Marcus possible for us to do what we do: Blackmore and his wife, Caroline. Via their philanthropic trust, the Blackmore Foundation, they generously funded • Adrenalin – thanks again to our member Josh Axford for both our new ‘Little Ripper Life Saver’ UAV or drone, as all the amazing prizes over the season well as a new IRB, with both major pieces of equipment launched and active this season. • Talk AV – yet again member Simon Walsh gave time, expertise and equipment to make sure we could be heard The launch of the drone took place on the same day as our and seen annual ocean swim, the Blackmores Billy Swim. It attracted a host of media coverage in the form of two Channel 9 News • Avalon Meats – for those wonderful snags stories, two stories in the Daily Telegraph (paper and online) and coverage in the Manly Daily (paper and online). This was • Amber Waves – snags need bread a great way to be able to highlight the work the Blackmore Foundation, and of course Blackmores, are doing in not only • BlueStone Homes - Neil Jones from BlueStone Homes our community, but more widely to promote the future of sponsored our men’s surf boat Ocean Thunder entry life saving in Australia. • Northern Beaches Council – for their support in promoting Another event of major interest, not only to us as a club the Blackmores Billy Swim but also to the national media, was the celebration of our • Royal Motor Yacht Club – for the buoys at the Swim member, Bruce Robertson, as he clocked up his record- breaking 75th year of patrolling on our beach. The event • Harris Farm - for their tasty fruit at the Swim also coincided with the launch of the IRB donated by the Blackmore Foundation and named after Bruce. Again, • Back to Health Physiotherapy – for the healing hands at media coverage was extensive with a host of stories both the swim and their donation in newspapers, online and coverage on Channel 9’s Today Show and ABC’s 7.30 Program. • United Resource Management (URM) for the significant support in providing free rubbish and recycling removal But sponsorship comes in many forms, both big and small. It can simply be helping us with cheaper snags for the • Zubi at Billy’s for being there for us in a myriad of ways Nippers BBQ; fruit for the swimmers after the Billy Swim; help with the AV system; and of course, prizes for the Grants again play a big part as well in funding our many events we run. operations and this season was no exception with equipment grants allowing us to purchase a new IRB motor and other vital equipment.

So thank you to all the organisations and people who’s generosity in funds, equipment and time have helped us have such a brilliant season!

18 BLACKMORES BILLY SWIM In the lead up to this year’s swim, the first swim in REPORT the Pittwater Series of five ocean swims across the Northern Beaches, we experienced some very large surf, very cold water conditions (13C!! Brrrr!!) and concerns over whether the skies would shine on us or not.

Adding to the event this year was the launch of the Little Ripper Life Saver technology, kindly donated by the Marcus & Caroline Blackmore Foundation. So after rehearsals, media events, dips in the cold large surf for newspaper photo shoots, we eagerly awaited the day’s weather. And we weren’t disappointed! Beautiful weather, flat-ish surf, low tide and 18C water temperature. With clear skies and a bevy of VIP’s including Rob Stokes State MLA, Jason Falinski Federal MP, Michael Regan, Mayor Northern Beaches Council and Kylie McPherson Northern Beaches Councillor we set the competitors off for their 800m and 1500m ocean swim. 21 IRB CAPTAIN'S REPORT It is with great satisfaction that I look back on a great year. It is hard to believe that only a few years ago our club was scrambling for IRB drivers and crew, to keep up proficient patrols. Now the IRB section is thriving with plenty of excitement and proficient crew and drivers. This did not come automatically and hence I wanted to thank everyone that help us further develop IRB’s over the last few years.

First of all a big thanks to the Blackmore Foundation. Marcus IRB TRAINING AND RACING and Caroline Blackmore, (who are at the beach every morning) donated the world’s first Surf Life Saving drone to “Drive it like you stole it!” ancient proverb attributed to the club. It is exciting for the club to be involved with these some old poacher turned gamekeeper hi-tech innovations. However we also acknowledge that IRB’s are critical equipment to save lives when it is needed most. We reached a long-held dream of bringing back IRB racing We are very thankful to the Blackmores for the recent best to Bilgola when we competed in the 2018 NSW IRB Racing shaped and equipped IRB and engine to do the best job possible, the “Bruce Robertson”. Congratulations must go to David Madew as our IRB Person of the Year (2017/18) for outstanding contribution over the Our racers are young, fast and full of potential – we are raring season(s). Dave is an amazing clubman. After running the Nipper BBQ, initiating plenty of social club gatherings, he has to go in a couple more rounds of the 2018 NSW Season over taken the initiative for Bilgola to start racing again. It is early the next few months with several new crews and drivers, days but the petrol fumes and enthusiasm could show some before going to the NSW Championships at South West nice results. Rocks. We will then put together a more sustained and established bid for the 2019 NSW Racing Season and beyond. Next to critical surf lifesaving service, the most important IRB result is a lot of fun! Hence I encourage young and old to Thanks to Nigel and Trevi for their advice and support in walk in to the shed to see what the rubber boat fraternity can training and interpreting the rules of the game. 23 “Sunday Sessions started off as a small four-week January season but quickly morphed into a 14-week run over Summer into Autumn, attracting many local people as well as club members, featuring musicians from the Northern Beaches”

24 LICENSEE & FUNCTIONS REPORT We have been very fortunate in being able to hold all sorts of events including christenings, weddings and funerals at our club this year, reflecting the 70 years that the club will celebrate in 2019. Outside functions have been very successful from Spring and beyond under the eyes of Margaret Perrin and her bar staff and Kylie Ockwell in the front office with most weekends having some sort of celebration, allowing a little slice of what many of us see and experience every day of this beautiful club.

We have also been very active with in-club functions, permutation in the space of thirty minutes every Sunday particularly at the back end of the season. Sunday Sessions during the Nippers season is a sight to behold. Both of these members no doubt we can succeed in other parts of our club, namely saving would be quite gratified that the club that they help build lives on the beach. was able to play a small part in the celebration of their services. The committee has determined that the association is not a reporting entity.

The financial report has been prepared on an accruals basis and is based on historic costs and does not take into account changing money values or, except where specifically stated, current valuations of non-current assets.

The following significant accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period unless otherwise stated, have been adopted in the preparation of this financial report.

Membership fees

Membership fees received in advance of the current year will be brought to account as income in the appropriate year.

Inventories

Inventories are measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value. Costs are assigned on a first- in first-out basis.

Under the tax system, the Club was endorsed on 1 July 2000 by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) as an income tax exempt entity.

Fringe Benefits Tax

Property

Freehold land and buildings are shown at their fair value (being the amount for which an asset could be exchanged between knowledgeable willing parties in an arm's length transaction), based on periodic, but at least triennial, valuations by external independent valuers, less subsequent depreciation.

Property Leasehold Improvements, Plant and Equipment (PPE)

Leasehold improvements and office equipment are carried at cost less, where applicable, any accumulated depreciation.

The depreciable amount of all PPE is depreciated over the useful lives of the assets to the association commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use.

Leasehold improvements are amortised over the shorter of either the unexpired period of the lease or the estimated useful lives of the improvements.

Trade and Other Payables

Trade and other payables represent the liability outstanding at the end of the reporting period for goods and services received by the club during the reporting period, which remain unpaid. The balance is recognised as a current liability with the amounts normally paid within 30 days of the recognition of the liability.

Cash and Cash Equivalents

Cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand, deposits held at-call with banks, other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less, and bank overdrafts. Bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings in current liabilities on the balance sheet.

Comparative Figures

Revenue and Other Income

Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable after taking into account any trade discounts and volume rebates allowed.

Revenue from the sale of goods is recognised at the point of delivery as this corresponds to the transfer of significant risks and rewards of ownership of the goods and cessation of all involvement in those goods.

All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST).

Interest revenue is recognised using the effective interest rate method, which for floating rate financial assets is the rate inherent in the instrument.

Revenue from fund raisings, donations, grants/subsidies, sponsorships is recognised at fair value of the consideration received or receivable after taking into account the period of commitment. Income is recognized on accruals basis which is at the point income is committed, not received.

Goods and Services Tax (GST)

Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Tax Office. In these circumstances the GST is recognised as part of the cost of acquisition of the asset or as part of an item of the expense. Receivables and payables in the balance sheet are shown inclusive of GST.

This ethos has been successfully merged with the requirement of SLSA that Nippers should follow an age specific curriculum. Our Age Managers continue to adopt this curriculum and ensure the Nippers meet the requirements, which enable the club to issue attainment certificates to each child enrolled at the end of the season.

The culmination of this is the Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC), under the direction of Rob Chant a squad of U14’s participated in the necessary training over a twelve week period to attain this award. I am pleased to announce that the entire squad successfully passed which was a great result. This formally closes out their Nipper experience, as they now move into Cadets and join weekend patrols as active members.

Bronze squads – throughout the season under the watchful eye of Pete Fenley and Isabelle Schmidt, a number of Bronze squads containing Cadets and Nipper Parents were successful in attaining this award. This is a vital component of the club and ensures our ability to run the water activities each week in a safe environment. Congratulations to all that have achieved this award.
