Uefa Champions League UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - 2016/17 SEASON MATCH PRESS KITS Fußball Arena München - Munich Wednesday 19 October 2016 20.45CET (20.45 local time) FC Bayern München Group D - Matchday 3 PSV Eindhoven Last updated 18/10/2016 04:23CET UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE OFFICIAL SPONSORS Match background 2 Legend 4 1 FC Bayern München - PSV Eindhoven Wednesday 19 October 2016 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) Match press kit Fußball Arena München, Munich Match background FC Bayern München will look to bounce back from defeat at Club Atlético de Madrid when they host PSV Eindhoven on matchday three. Previous meetings • Bayern hold the upper hand in the clubs' head-to-head encounters (W4 D1 L1). • PSV won the most recent meeting 2-1 in Eindhoven in the 1999/2000 UEFA Champions League first group stage, Luc Nilis and Ruud van Nistelrooy scoring as the visitors finished with ten men after Jens Jeremies' dismissal. PSV, who came bottom of the group, had lost 2-1 in Munich, where Paulo Sérgio scored twice and Mark van Bommel was sent off for the Dutch side. • The line-ups in Munich on 15 September 1999 were: Bayern: Kahn, Andersson, Matthäus, Kuffour, Strunz, Jeremies, Effenberg, Lizarazu, Paulo Sérgio (Zickler 79), Santa Cruz (Jancker 68), Scholl (Salihamidžić 87). PSV: Waterreus, Vogel, Dirkx (Bruggink 77), Faber, Heintze, Iwan, Van Bommel, Nikiforov (Bouma 82), Khokhlov, Van Nistelrooy, Nilis. • PSV earned a 0-0 draw in Munich when first visiting Bayern in the 1986/87 European Champion Clubs' Cup first round, but still lost 2-0 on aggregate. • Bayern prevailed again in the 1989/90 European Cup quarter-finals, winning both at home (2-1) and away (1-0). Match background Bayern • Bayern sit second in Group D having beaten FC Rostov (5-0) but lost at Atlético (0-1). • In defeating Rostov on matchday one, Bayern established a UEFA Champions League record of 13 consecutive home victories. • Bayern have never lost at home to visitors from the Netherlands (W7 D2). PSV • Phillip Cocu's men are still looking for a first victory in Group D after a 1-0 opening home loss to Atlético and 2-2 draw at Rostov in which they twice came from behind. • PSV won the 1988 European Cup final in Stuttgart against SL Benfica, but they have won only one of 18 matches in Germany against Bundesliga teams (W1 D4 L13). • That solitary PSV victory was a 2-1 success at TSV Eintracht Braunschweig in the UEFA Cup third round in December 1977. • PSV failed to win on their travels in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League (D2 L2); this sequence included a 2-0 defeat at VfL Wolfsburg on matchday three. • The Eredivisie club's last away victory in the competition proper was at PFC CSKA Mosvka (1-0) in the 2007/08 group stage. Coach and player links • As AC Milan coach, Carlo Ancelotti overcame a PSV team including Cocu in the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League semi-finals. Cocu scored twice in PSV's 3-1 second-leg success, but Milan progressed on away goals (3-3 agg). • Cocu was in the PSV side which, the following season, held Ancelotti's Milan 0-0 in a group stage fixture at San Siro on 19 October 2005. PSV won the return 1-0. • In that same group campaign, Rafinha made his UEFA Champions League debut for FC Schalke 04 in a 1-0 defeat at a PSV side containing Cocu. • As an FC Barcelona player, Cocu suffered back-to-back losses to Bayern in the 1998/99 group stage (0-1 away, 1-2 home). • Arjen Robben was a PSV player from 2001 to 2004. In two full seasons in PSV's first team he made 56 league appearances and scored 17 goals. • Robben played in the Netherlands team with Cocu at UEFA EURO 2004. Cocu was Netherlands assistant coach when a Dutch side including Robben finished runners-up at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. • Olexandr Zinchenko's Ukraine lost 2-0 to the Germany of Manuel Neuer, Jérôme Boateng and Thomas Müller in the UEFA EURO 2016 group stage. 2 FC Bayern München - PSV Eindhoven Wednesday 19 October 2016 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) Match press kit Fußball Arena München, Munich • With Liverpool FC, Xabi Alonso faced PSV five times in the UEFA Champions League (W4, D1). This included two victories (3-0 a, 1-0 h) in the 2006/07 quarter-finals. • Daniel Schwaab faced Bayern ten times as a player with SC Freiburg, Bayer 04 Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart (W1 D1 L7). • Luuk de Jong faced Bayern twice in the Bundesliga with VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach (2012–2014), losing both games. Match facts Bayern • Ancelotti started his reign with eight consecutive wins before defeat at Atlético on matchday two. Bayern then suffered their first Bundesliga setback this season, being held 1-1 at home to 1. FC Köln. They also drew, 2-2 at Eintracht Frankfurt, on Saturday. • Lewandowski, who came off the bench against Frankfurt, has scored 14 goals in his last 13 games for club and country. He has now scored 126 goals in 201 Bundesliga appearances (74/131 for Borussia Dortmund; 52/70 for Bayern). • Kimmich has scored six goals in his last seven outings for Bayern. • Rafinha's strike in the 3-1 triumph over FC Ingolstadt 04 on 17 September was his first for Bayern since 13 April 2013. • Douglas Costa has made only three appearances this season because of hamstring and thigh problems. • Holger Badstuber (13 February, ankle and muscular problems) has resumed team training and was on the bench against Frankfurt. • Lewandowski struck his third hat-trick of 2016/17 as Poland beat Denmark 3-2 on 8 October. He headed an injury- time winner against Armenia three days later, making it 2-1. It was his 40th goal for Poland. • Julian Green was on target for the United States in friendlies against Cuba (2-0, 7 October) and New Zealand (1-1, 12 October). • Robben (ribs) and Javi Martínez (adductors) missed October's European Qualifiers because of injury. However, Robben started – and scored – against Frankfurt while Martínez is back in training. • Franck Ribéry missed the Frankfurt game due to muscular problems and is not expected to return until the end of October. PSV • PSV are 22 matches unbeaten away from home in all competitions (W17 D5, including the 2016 Dutch Super Cup), since their 2-0 loss at VfL Wolfsburg on 21 October 2015, a matchday three fixture. • Davy Pröpper has scored four goals in PSV's last five matches. • Summer signing Siem de Jong lined up alongside brother Luuk for the first time at club level on 1 October as PSV drew 1-1 at sc Heerenveen. That result ended PSV's Eredivisie run of 13 straight away victories. • Pröpper made his first start for the Netherlands in their 1-0 defeat by France on 10 October. He was replaced by club-mate Jetro Willems late on. • Steven Bergwijn, 19, made his Netherlands U21 debut as a substitute in the 0-0 home draw against Turkey on 6 October. Five days later he scored his first two goals at that level in a 4-1 victory in Cyprus. • Andrés Guardado (hamstring) and Luuk de Jong (concussion) suffered knocks against Heerenveen, ruling them out of international duty. However, De Jong played all of Saturday's 1-1 draw with Heracles Almelo and Guardado was an unused substitute. Luciano Narsingh also featured at the weekend despite returning early from Netherlands duty with a groin injury. • Jorrit Hendrix (knee, out since 28 September) and Jürgen Locadia (groin, 28 August) have both been sidelined. 3 FC Bayern München - PSV Eindhoven Wednesday 19 October 2016 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) Match press kit Fußball Arena München, Munich Legend ALL-TIME STATISTICS The all-time record of the competing clubs in UEFA club competition. • Number #9 in the TDF Top 50
From being a small boy, I have always been a huge fan of both football and professional wrestling and at around the age of 10-years-old, I came across a monthly magazine brought to newsagents from the makers of the world famous Sports Illustrated all about pro wrestling. It was simply named Pro Wrestling Illustrated. It was a publication I regularly read as well as Shoot and Match weekly magazines to feed my football addiction. In 1991, PWI began this new craze that instantly grabbed my attention more than no other magazine had before. They revealed the 'PWI 500'. The 'PWI 500' section in the magazine listed (in rank order) the top 500 professional wrestlers in the world that year. Counting down from 500, this revealed to me many, many talents that I have not discovered as of yet. This was released every year, and still to this day is the best selling edition of the magazine each year. I studied and read and read over and over again that edition in 1991 and I came up with an idea. What if Match or Shoot revealed the top 500 footballers in the world? Thinking back to 1991, I used to love to tune into the 'BBC Radio 1 Top 40' show every Sunday afternoon too... maybe I'm a tad obsessed with countdowns. Anyways, reflecting on the idea, I thought about it each year the 'PWI 500' was released. As years went on, I felt that this would have grown into a hugely successful plan, gaining great recognition with people in the game, possibly gained its own award ceremony on TV with the emergence and exposure SKY Television in the United Kingdom was just beginning to give to the game back then.

As usual, they have put forward nominees to receive the annual awards presented at the UEFA Gala, held as a curtain-raiser to the new club competition season at the end of August to coincide with the draws for the opening stages of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Cup. They have named six candidates for each of the awards presented to the Best Goalkeeper, Best Defender, Best Midfielder, Best Attacker, Most Valuable Player and Best Coach, based on their performances during the 2001/02 European campaign. This is not restricted to the UEFA Champions League – which explains the inclusion of Bert van Marwijk, head coach of the Feyenoord side which carried off the UEFA Cup and will be in Monaco to contest the UEFA Super Cup with Real Madrid CF.
