Postcards from Italy A teaser for the full report at our June Club Meeting

As most of you know, AROC organized a club tour to Italy from May 11-20. Several NWARC members went on the trip, have just returned and are sorting through their memories and photos. The monthly club meeting on June 13 will feature a presentation by AROO’s Doug Zaitz (and possibly others) on this trip, but as a teaser for that event and for the full report that will appear in the Alfa Owner, here are a few photos posted by Gordy Hyde and Cindy Banzer during what looks to have been a wonderful and very memorable trip. The itinerary was as follows: May 11-12, Turin: Hotel in the old factory. Viewed the Agnelli art collection, then toured the Na- tional Auto Museum, followed by dinner at a winery near Alba. May 13-14, Como: Alfa Museum and day trip to Bellagio. May 15-16, Bologna: Toured the , Ducati and Pagani factories. Viewed the Righini and historic collections, tasted Balsamic vinegar and Parmesan cheese. May 17-19, Gardone on Lake Garda: viewed the Gordy Hyde start of Mille Miglia, toured Mille Miglia museum in Brescia, tasted Allegrini wines and visited Verona.

President ’s Column By Fred Russell The Busy Time is Upon Us

Now we’re in for a change of pace that may just shock our systems, send a few of us to the hospi- tal, and drive some to an increased use of medica- tion. After what seemed like 400 days of rain, the weather has suddenly turned wonderful and its timing is fantastic. We’ll get our first dose of sun related vit- amin D since mid 2016. In each of these gatherings I’ve found Alfa Romeos looking great amongst the other fun, lesser marques. I also found several of our friends and members in attendance either to see the shows, or as vendors selling ice cream (Sharon… you know I’d add you to the newsletter!). Another wonderful aspect of the great weather is it allows more opportunity to assess roads for our future events that happen later in the season. Last Month’s Club Meeting - May 9

A Social Evening at Wild About Cars Garage

It’s important to hold our monthly club meetings to give people a chance to get updates on the goings-on within the club and to provide a forum for members to share ideas and ask questions. Thank you to each person who helps us make this happen and who volunteers with events, suggestions and talent!

The social side of these meetings is also one of the key reasons we get together regularly, of course. At our May meeting, we gathered at Wild About Cars Garage, talked a bit, enjoyed some wonderful homemade minestrone, wine, sausages, and more... then we all watched the 1969 version of that fun movie, “The Ital- ian Job” with plenty of Alfas, Minis, and one rather bent Miura. Thanks to Cindy Akana for putting this together and for providing the minestrone! Fred Russell

Alfa News The 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio was crowned “Car of Texas” and also took home honors for “Performance Sedan of Texas” and “Most Drives” at the Texas Auto Roundup hosted by the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) at Circuit of The Amer- icas (COTA). A total of 52 TAWA journalists attended and drove 42 vehicles during the two-day event. Nic Phillips, President of TAWA, commented that “Alfa Romeo has created something original, something extraordinary in just about every measure with the Giulia Quadri- foglio – one of those cars you have to experience to believe. Whether you’re on the track or looking for a smile-inducing drive to work, this sedan delivers it all and quite comforta- bly at that.” ------The Alfa Romeo Giulia has been named a 'Game Changer' at the 2017 Autocar Awards as “a complete transformation for one of the most loved names in motoring.” Autocar said that "The Giulia is a riveting, idiosyncratic and striking entrant into a class usually de- fined by an understated brand of superiority." Mark Tisshaw, Editor of Autocar, commented: "This is not only the most competitive Alfa Romeo saloon since the last Giulia was launched more than half a century ago but, crucially for anyone with Alfisti blood lurking in their veins, it's the most likeable, too. With its in- credible performance and exciting handling, the Giulia is everything you'd want an Alfa Romeo to be." ------Stelvio Pricing: Alfa Romeo has announced pricing for the 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Stelvio Ti: 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio With the 2.0-liter four, eight-speed automatic, 18-inch wheels and leather seating, MSRP is $41,995. Upcoming Events - June 2017

June 3 - FEN Drive to Marrowstone Winery

Rex and Carrie Rice from Fiat Enthusiasts Northwest (FEN) are hosting a drive on the Olympic Peninsula on June 3rd. The drive starts at the cannabis store at the head of Discovery Bay on Highway 101 at 11 AM; this is where the old cabooses are stored. Come early to shop! The drive will end at Marrowstone Winery on Marrowstone Island, with music and a BBQ. The drive is short, the scenery is good and we will have a spot to show off our cars.

June 10 - NWARC Garden Tour, Heronswood & Windcliff

4th Annual NWARC Garden Tour on June 10, 2017 Around 30 people have signed up for this special treat, tours led by renowned gardener Dan Hinkley of both his Heronswood and Windcliff Gardens. Dan is an American plantsman, garden writer, horticulturist and nurseryman who collects rare and unusual plants from around the world for his gardens. The original garden, Heronswood, is set in a shady glen. The newer Windcliff garden is on the bright, windswept shores of Puget Sound. Each garden has unique collections for its environment. There will be two routes to get there. One group will meet at the Edmonds-Kingston Ferry for the 8:50 am crossing and then drive the short distance to the Heronswood Garden; the other will meet in Gig Harbor at 8:30 am and drive north to Kingston. If you’re still planning to attend and haven’t yet told Debi Schmid, you MUST let her know by calling her at 253-310-8015 before June 5, which is when she has to confirm the count.

August 20-21 - Solar Eclipse Tour - RSVP Required!! Have you ever experienced a total eclipse? Daylight into a moonless night and then back to day again in a 3- hour period. The last eclipse in the area was in 1979 passing over Portland and parts of Eastern Washington. Sadly, it was a heavy overcast which is typical on a late February day. This time, it’s coming by during our driest time of the year so chances are great we’ll see the full effect. From where we plan to drive, the eclipse will gradually plunge into total darkness for 2 minutes and 2 seconds with what looks like a ring of fire around the black silhou- ette of the moon, known as a corona. Though it requires special glasses (I’ll provide these) to watch the moons gradual 1.5 hour progression across in front of the sun, the 2 minute portion of total eclipse can be viewed normally without eye protection. Our plan is to leave the Southcenter Mall area around 10 AM on Sunday, August 20, driving pleasant roads south and stopping at the LeMay Foundation for a group tour. Bring a sack lunch for this stop. Next, we drive backroads down to Vancouver, WA where we’ll stay at a hotel for the night. Getting up early the next morning for breakfast, we’ll be on the road around 8 AM following US Hwy 26 as it heads south east across Oregon. Traffic may be slow with many people heading to the same event we’re going to. We should arrive in Madras, watch the last of the darkening process, then the total eclipse at noon, and some of the lightening. As this will be lunchtime, we’ll eat a provided lunch while we watch it get lighter. Traffic will be an equal challenge heading back to Vancouver but once we enter Washington, we’ll follow a somewhat differ- ent scenic route back up north towards Seattle. In all, its 600 miles round-trip. I’ve reserved rooms at the Holiday Inn Express at Salmon Creek Vancouver, WA. You’ll need to reserve a room by either calling them at (360) 576-1040 and asking for a room in the “Alfa Romeo Club Tour” block of rooms. The rates are $119.00 + taxes for the night. They are holding a few rooms for us until July 20. After that, any rooms not reserved will be released. Please also contact me ([email protected]) and I’ll be able to create a route guide for you and share the starting point. This is a rare chance to see something almost as cool as an Alfa Romeo and a wee bit more natural. Fred Russell

Keeping Your Alfa Clean and Happy - Part 2

Editor’s Note: Two of the best-kept cars in our Chapter are Georges Hebrant’s 1979 Sprint Veloce and Harry Reid’s 1987 Spider Quadrifoglio. Despairing of ever getting my Alfa as clean as theirs, I asked them for advice on how they do it. Last month we heard from Georges; here’s Harry.

Harry Reed—Keeping It Clean

Engine compartment housekeeping I started out with a clean engine on my 1987 Spider 30 years ago, and decid- ed to keep it that way. Once clean it takes very little effort to maintain to the standard you want. For heavy grease and oil I use Simple Green; I put a drip pan under the engine and spray it on, let it sit a few minutes and then wash it off with cold water, using a small spray bottle for both liquids. Putting some old newspa- per in the drip pan makes it a lot easier to clean up. I like to use 70% isopropyl alcohol to do the detailing as it leaves no residue and has no lingering order. Put a small amount in a container and use a half inch paint brush or a similar; I also use a rag dampened with the alcohol on easy-to-wipe areas. I wipe down all the rubber, plastic, electrical wires and hoses with Armor All Natural Finish Detailer. This process will help protect the treated areas, and is a good time to check the wires and hoses for wear or deterioration. I wax whatever paint is exposed, using a wipe on, let dry and wipe off product. Once you have accomplished all this it takes only about two hours a year to maintain the clean look.

Soft top maintenance My soft top is 30 years old, still no leaks and looks good. Every so often I use the shop vacuum cleaner on the blow func- tion, and then use a soft sponge with water and car soap to clean the fabric. I usually wipe the sponge in one direction; I don’t go back and forth with it. I clean the rear plastic window the same way, and then use a coat of Carnauba Plus wax on it. Wipe it on, let it dry and then polish it with a soft cloth. I have tried many products over the years; this works the best and is the easy to use. Besides being clean and clear it gives very good protection. Once the top started to show its age, I started the following process. Clean as directed above, then mask off the rear window and cover the rest of the car. Spray two coats of SEM paint satin Black Flexible coating. If it is a warm day 20 minutes between coats is good. Let it dry for 30 minutes and then spray two coats of ScotchGard Fabric and Upholstery Protector. I do this every two years. The only hard part is covering up what you don’t want black paint or ScotchGard on.

Winter storage tips There are long lists of things to do to protect your Alfa during the long winter down times. A couple that I do every winter are: • Fill the gas tank an add STA-BIL fuel stabilizer. • Put a container of DRI Z AIR in each foot well; it’s avail- able from Home Depot, Lowes, WalMart and on-line. I get a quart or so of water from each container over the winter. I also put a low voltage heater in the driver side foot well. All this helps get through the damp winter.

Every two years I disconnect all the electrical connectors in the engine bay and spray with a connector cleaner, sold in most all auto part stores. My Alfa has not let me down in 30 years; I believe keeping the electrical systems as dry as possible is a large contributor to reliabil- ity. I do a lot of driving on the back roads of the Northwest, most of this driving solo, so it is of some comfort to have as much reliability as I can. It’s been a long winter; don’t forget to check the air PSI on your spare tire.

HAPPINESS IS NOT JUST AROUND THE CORNER: IT IS THE CORNER Harry Reed Photos: Jon Inge
