Dominik Scherrer DOMINIK SCHERRER COMPOSER An extremely fresh, innovative and resourceful composer, Dominik has emerged as one of the most talented score composers of his generation. His award-winning music can be heard on some of the finest television dramas made in recent years, earning him an Ivor Novello Award and RTS Award Nomination for Ripper Street, a 2015 Primetime Emmy Nomination for The Missing, two further Ivor Novello Nominations: for Amazon’s The Collection, and Marple, where Dominik’s iconic theme runs across all six series. And a second Ivor Novello Award win for the fantasy thriller Requiem for BBC/Netflix, on which Dominik collaborated with Natasha Khan, aka Bat for Lashes (“The music and sound effects [..] constitute a revelation: why, when it can be done this well, was it ever done otherwise?” The Guardian). Dominik has most recently scored the Netflix/ BBC series The Serpent, written by Richard Warlow and Toby Finlay and starring Jenna Coleman and Tahar Rahim. And other recent scores include the BBC drama film Elizabeth is Missing an adaption of the book by Emma Healey, the 8- part thriller The Widow for ITV/Amazon starring Kate Beckinsale and Charles Dance, BBC’s 7- part thriller Baptiste written by Harry and Jack Williams, and Mammoth Screen’s The City & The City directed by Tom Shankland (“A living, breathing musical creation, with heart and soul and a brain” Soundtrack Dreams). Equally accomplished in film scoring, Dominik’s credits include Alina Marazzi’s Tutto Parla Di Te (All About You), Scenes of a Sexual Nature starring Ewan McGregor and Hugh Bonneville The Truth, The Nine Lives of Tomas Katz (Best Music Award at Spain's Estapona Film Festival), Alice Through The Looking Glass starring Kate Beckinsale, and Appetite starring Ute Lemper, for whom he also wrote the title song, which reached No. 2 on the UK classical charts. Dominik has his own avant-garde disco & video art duo and composes performance music for the theatre. He also produces sound design and composition for fine art installations, most notably for artist Suki Chan. As composer/director, he has a new film-opera in development. It follows his kinetic opera for screen ‘Hell For Leather’, which premiered at Sundance and went on to win him 10 awards. Dominik is a British-Swiss composer who works from his studio in Spitalfields, London. Since 2001 it has been located on West 40th Street, where it provides a variety of services to the actors, directors, producers, and other theatre professionals who work both on and off Broadway. Many of its employees THE PLAYERS are young performers, and a number of them take part in 16 Gramercy Park South events at the Shop’s lovely black-box auditorium. In 2011 Manhattan the store was recognized by a Tony Award for Excellence RECEPTION 6:30, PANEL 7:00 in the Theatre . Not surprisingly, its beneficiaries (among them Admission Free playwrights Eric Bogosian, Moises Kaufman, Lin-Manuel Reservations Requested Miranda, Lynn Nottage, and Theresa Rebeck), have responded with alarm to reports that high rents may force the Shop to relocate or close. Sharing that concern, we joined The Players and such notables as actors Jim Dale, Jeffrey Hardy, and Peter Maloney, and writer Adam Gopnik to rally support for a cultural treasure. DAKIN MATTHEWS ♦ Monday, January 28 We look forward to a special evening with DAKIN MATTHEWS, a versatile artist who is now appearing in Aaron Sorkin’s acclaimed Broadway dramatization of To Kill a Mockingbird. • Neil Baldwin, Celebrity
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This book would not have been commissioned if the multi-award-winning BBC TV drama Marvellous, based on Neil’s life, had not been such an outstanding success. To adapt a line from Marvellous: ‘Acknowledgements, I wouldn’t know where to start.’ Or indeed to finish. But I’ll try. We thank the writer and executive director, Peter Bowker, for his brilliantly perceptive and funny script, which truly captured Neil’s spirit, so outstandingly portrayed on screen by Toby Jones, without which there would have been no film. His fellow executive director, Patrick Spence, managing director of Fifty Fathoms, part of the Tiger Aspect group, had the wisdom to see the potential of the film, and sell it to the BBC. He managed the whole process with sensitive professionalism. Patrick was the figurehead and representation of a brilliant directing, production, acting and publicity team, who have gained the professional recognition they so richly deserve, and who had Neil’s best interests at the heart of all their work. It seems invidious to selectively name and praise individuals here. Thank you all, guys, for a job superbly well done. Marvellous itself would not have been conceived and made without the article written about Neil in The Guardian in 2010 by our longstanding friend, Francis Beckett. But Francis’s contribution certainly did not end there. He conducted some of the interviews for the book, edited the whole text and drew upon his extensive experience as an author and journalist to provide invaluable advice on structure and content, and provided an introduction and afterword.
