Those Slap-Happy Screamsters Go A’haunting! Saturday, October 23 at 2 & 8 pm only Abbott and Costello’s Hold That Ghost In late 1941 Milton Berle was said to have quipped, "Things are slow in Hollywood. Abbott and Costello haven't made a picture all day." And he was right. fter the smash success of their first starring feature,Buck Privates, (1941) burlesque and Aradio comics Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were the number one box office attraction in the country--and literally saved Universal Studios from bankruptcy. In fact, the only movie that outgrossed Buck Privates at the time was Gone with the Wind. Anxious to keep the team working, Universal Studios had already completed production on their next film, a non-music spoof of two popular film genres of the era--the Haunted House movie and Gangster melodrama--then titled Oh Charlie! (a reference to a running gag in the film where a dead gangster's body keeps turning up). But when the huge box office returns fromBuck Privates began rolling in, Universal temporarily shelved Oh Charlie! to put the team in an- other service themed follow-up, In the Navy. When they returned to Oh Charlie! , Universal discovered test audiences for the film wondered why the Andrews Sisters, who had been in the two previous hits, were absent in this one. So additional re-shoots were required to include the trio, now making it a horror/ comedy, with a couple of songs thrown in. The title was eventually changed to Hold That Ghost and became the third smash hit for Abbott and Costello that year, continuing a string of successes that would keep them among the top box office attractions for the next ten years and would also serve as the inspiration for another classic, 1948's Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.

  • Who's on First 
ABBOTT & COSTELLO WHO’S ON FIRST? "Who's on First?" is descended from turn-of-the-century burlesque sketches like "The Baker Scene" (the shop is located on Watt Street) and "Who Died" (the owner is named Who). In England, in the variety halls (Britain's equivalent of vaudeville theatres), comedian Will Hay performed a routine in the early 1930s (and possibly earlier) as a schoolmaster interviewing a schoolboy named Howe who came from Ware but now lives in Wye. By the early 1930s, a "Baseball Routine" had become a standard bit for burlesque comics across the United States of America[citation needed]. Abbott and Costello honed the sketch, using the nicknames of then-contemporary baseball players like Dizzy and Daffy Dean (and their alleged French cousin, "Goofé") to set up the premise. In 1938 burlesque producer John Grant, working with Abbott and Costello, asked Will Glickman, a staff writer on The Kate Smith Hour radio show, to sharpen and amplify the Baseball Routine for performance on the show. This version, with extensive wordplay based on the names of contemporary baseball players, became known as "Who's on First?" By 1944, Abbott and Costello had the routine copyrighted. Abbott and Costello performed "Who's on First?" numerous times in their careers, rarely performing it the same way twice. Once, they did the routine at President Roosevelt's request. The routine was featured in the team's 1940 film debut, One Night in the Tropics. The duo reprised the bit in their 1945 film The Naughty Nineties, and it is that version which is considered their finest recorded rendition.

Defendants defend the district court’s fair use ruling, and further argue that dismissal is supported, in any event, by plaintiffs’ failure to plead a valid copyright interest. We here conclude that defendants’ appropriation of Who’s on First? was not a fair use, but, nevertheless, affirm the challenged judgment on defendants’ alternative invalidity ground.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Lancaster E-Prints Gothic—Film—Parody1 Kamilla Elliott Department of English and Creative Writing, Lancaster University, United Kingdom [email protected] Abstract: Gothic, film, and parody are all erstwhile devalued aesthetic forms recuperated by various late twentieth-century humanities theories, serving in return as proof-texts for these theories in their battles against formalism, high-art humanism, and right-wing politics. Gothic film parodies parody these theories as well as Gothic fiction and films. As they redouble Gothic doubles, refake Gothic fakeries, and critique Gothic criticism, they go beyond simple mockery to reveal inconsistencies, incongruities, and problems in Gothic criticism: boundaries that it has been unwilling or unable to blur, binary oppositions it has refused to deconstruct, like those between left- and right-wing politics, and points at which a radical, innovative, subversive discourse manifests as its own hegemonic, dogmatic, and clichéd double, as in critical manipulations of Gothic (dis)belief. The discussion engages Gothic film parodies spanning a range of decades (from the 1930s to the 2000s) and genres (from feature films to cartoons to pornographic parodies). Keywords: Gothic; film; parody; literary film adaptation; criticism; theory; psychoanalysis; identity politics; belief; We laugh at the structures which had in the past formed the appearance of inviolable 1 truth. Today’s laughter is the movement from the laughter of the past. —Sander L. Gilman (23) The hyphens in the title are part homage to, part parody of Roland Barthes’s Image— Music—Text.

It happened on NBC Born William Abbott under a circus tent in Asbury Park, New Jersey, he was the son of a circus advance man and a bareback rider. His first job was in Coney Island's Dreamland Park where he did a kid prank in the Crystal Maze When the customers would get lost in the maze, Abbott would appear and lisp: 'Are you lost, mister? I'll take you outside for a dime." At sixteen Abbott occupied the box office of a Brooklyn burlesque theater. He had just got this job when he walked into a waterfront café and woke up to find himself stoking coal on a Norwegian freighter bound for its home port. Back in Brooklyn he re- entered the box office field, and later with his brother operated theaters in six cities. One night in a Pennsylvania town he was rushed on stage to replace an ailing comic. He never left the stage. In 1936 he joined a sad faced little clown named Lou Costello in a Minsky burlesque unit in Chicago. In January, 1938, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were show. He gave the concept to a few screenwriters, including Oscar Brodney, Bertram Milhauser, and the team of Robert Lees and Fred Rinaldo. “The minute the studio told Fred and I the basic idea,” Lees recalled in Abbott and Costello in Hollywood, “we said ‘This is the greatest idea for a comedy that ever was!’ But that’s all they gave us. We came up with the rest.” Lees and Rinaldo, who had written Hold That Ghost (1941), came back with a promising treatment. Titled “Ab- bott and Costello Meet Frankenstein,” their first crack at the story was delivered April 21, 1947. It has most of the elements that will be in the final film: the boys are inept baggage handlers who deliver crates to MacDougal’s House of Horrors; the “exhibits” get up and walk away; Larry Talbot, on Dracula’s trail, persuades the boys to help him; there’s a Abbott and Costello Quarterly—7 FEATURE ” “THE BRAIN OF FRANKENSTEIN PRODUCTION # 1572 OCTOBER 1947 START DATE: FEBRUARY 5, 1948 CAST: BUD ABBOTT ...........
