Title: Styles Grade: 10-12 Length: 90 minutes

Standards: 2.3- Examine garment styles and features. Objectives: The learner will…  Identify 2 garment features on an article of .  Construct a drawing of an outfit using 3 garment styles.

Materials: Pencil, paper, textbook, folders, Fashion Styles Group Worksheet, computer, projector, Fashion Figure worksheet, colored pencils, Chapter 6 Study Guide

Procedures: 1. Intro (8 minutes)  After the bell rings, please take out a piece of paper and write about the journal entry listed on the board. Bell Ringer: Write about a time when you realized someone was wearing the same outfit as you. How did this make you feel? What did you learn from the situation?  Once you have finished writing, get your book and folder and return to your seat.  Who would like to share about their journal entry? Most of us have had the experience of wearing the same outfit. Sometimes it is the same exact piece of clothing and sometimes it is only similar. The reason similar outfits occur is because there is a small base of garment styles that all outfits come from. The design process that we learned about yesterday is where these garment styles come into play.

2. Guided Instruction (45 minutes)  Everyone turn in your book to page 102. Look at the figure on the of the page. How many of these words do you recognize? These are the general terms to describe every or length and every pant or length. Whether it is you wearing a prom dress and your mother wearing an old long church dress, they would both be classified as floor length. Men and women can also be wearing the same length as well. Different lengths come in and out of style as well. Your grandmother could have worn the same shorts that you wear today. There are basic terms for each garment and fashion feature.  I am going to break you into three groups. (Neckline, collar, . Sleeve and . Dress, skirt, pant.) Read over the sections you have been given in the book so that you become an expert. Then fill in the questions for each different style. You will have twenty minutes to finish and then share your answers with the class.  When it is your group’s turn, all members will come to the front to present the answers to the questions you answered. We will all follow along in our books to get a visual picture of what items you are talking about. The group will take questions at the end of each presentation as well.  Did everyone see something they were familiar with in these different fashion styles? We have been exposed to a lot of these pictures and terms without even knowing it.

3. Direct Instruction (10 minutes)  Like we learned yesterday, every article of clothing starts with a pattern. I’ve pulled up a few patterns here to show examples of where these would be.

4. Independent Practice (25 minutes)  I’m giving you another blank fashion figure to work on today. I want you to create another outfit using at least three different styles that we discussed today. Draw and label the outfit. If you have extra time you can color it. On the back, write a one paragraph summary of your outfit. Include the following: what was your inspiration for this? Where would you wear it? What styles did you include and why? When you finish, place it in your folder and put your folder and book away.

5. Closure (2 minutes)  Find a partner. Share with them what fashion styles you see on the outfit they are wearing today.

Assessment Formal assessment will be taken on the fashion figure that the students turn in. They will be graded upon completion and correctness. Informal evaluations will be made based on their group participation and classroom discussion.

Modifications For students who need extra assistance, the directions can be explained to them more than once. They will also be given more time if they need it. I will monitor their groups during group work to make sure they are being included and involving themselves.

Supplemental Material Students will complete the Chapter 6 Study Guide for their test.

Question Bank:  Which styles do you think are always seen as classic?  Which ones create high fashion today?  What styles do you think will be the hardest to sew?  Can you name an era from our fashion history day that you think any of these styles come from?
