29th Christmas 1 8 am Urchfont Communion – Modern 10 am All Cannings TEAM COMMUNION 3.30 pm Bishop’s Cannings `Innocents Remembered` Advent Quiet Afternoon

Before Christmas overwhelms you (!) why not join us for a Quiet Afternoon led by Rev. Renee Coulson on the theme of `Life as Pilgrimage` ?

This is our Team activity for Advent, and will be held on Sunday 8th December in All Can- nings’ church - beginning with a `bring & share` lunch at 1pm and ending with a cup of tea at 5pm and Evensong at 6pm . All are welcome. Renee Coulson has personal experience of pilgrimages, having recently walked to Santia- go de Compostela, in northern Spain, which she will no doubt refer to in her talks, and there is plenty of space for you to simply find a quiet corner for yourself if you would prefer. CHRISTMAS INVITATION The churches and congregations of the Cannings & Redhorn Team warmly invite you to join with them in sharing the Christmas story and celebrating once again the birth of Jesus Christ – details of all our services are available elsewhere in this Magazine (`Opportunities for Wor- ship`) as well as on our Team web site: www.canningsredhornteam.org.uk

Lent Discussions Lent is still, mercifully, a good way off – as Easter will be late next year, falling on 20th April – but we are already planning our Lent Discussions in the Cannings & Redhorn Team. For 2014 we shall be using “The Long Road to Heaven” - a Lent Course based on the film “The Way”. This second Lent resource from the author of “The Naturalist and the Christ” (which we used this year) explores Christian understandings of “salvation” in a five- part study course. Starring Martin Sheen as a bereaved father, this soulful and uplifting film (“The Way”) observes a group of pilgrims walking the Way of St James to Santiago de Com- postela [Do you see a theme emerging here, from our Advent Quiet Day ?!]

As it follows their journey of inner transformation, the course examines biblical accounts and images of salvation– past, present and future – and addresses the questions: `What are we saved from ?` `What are we saved for ?` `Who can be saved ?` `What do we have to do to be saved ?` `How are we saved ?`

We are currently looking for both leaders and venues for our groups (and have already iden- tified one or two). If you might be interested, please have a word with one of the clergy. In addition, we plan to show the entire film in advance of Lent in case (like me) you have not seen it yet. William Lang.

Innocents Remembered Immediately following the Christmas celebrations there will be a special service with a very different feel from the rest of our Christmas worship. This will be for anyone in the Team and will take place at St Mary the Virgin, Bishop’s Cannings at 3.30 pm on Sunday 29th Decem- ber. This is the day after the Feast of the Holy Innocents, when we remember how King Her- od killed the baby boys in Bethlehem in an attempt to kill the infant Jesus. We are reminded that the light of Christ continues to come into a dark world, where there is much sadness and pain.

At this service we will remember those who have not been granted the fullness of life here on earth – those who died in the womb, the stillborn, the aborted and those who died in in- fancy or childhood.

Everybody is welcome to attend, but there is a special invitation to those who have lost chil- dren under whatever circumstances. Those who would like names read out at the service are invited to contact me by telephone or e-mail. If anonymity is requested, that of course will be respected. But even if it is not possible for relatives to be present, all names sent in will be read out and a candle lit in remembrance – and this of course includes all those who were never given a name.

The service will provide an opportunity to commend to God those who did not live out their full earthly life, but, we believe, who have found fulfilment in God’s presence.

Canon Robert Bailey . Tel: 01380 840587 [email protected] The Coffee Morning in November was held in one of the oldest house's in All Cannings, the home of Sally Hues. Sally made everyone so very welcome and with the Bring and Buy Table in her kitchen, the elderly Aga kept us nice and warm. In addition to all the normal items for sale, there were Pheasants and Partridges to order, which were very popular.

On THURSDAY the 5th December we shall be having our special Christmas Tea Afternoon in All Cannings Village Hall starting at 3 pm with lots of bargains to buy for Christmas and some deli- cious home made cakes and preserves. A cup of tea, warm Mince Pies and a chat with your friends will finish off a lovely afternoon.

DEADLINE: 12TH OF THE PREVIOUS MONTH At the October Branch Meeting, Anji Schofield told us about her trip to see the Passion Play performance at Oberam- mergau.

The Passion Play is the result of a vow made by the inhabitants of the village of Oberamm that if God spared them from the effects of the bubonic plague, then sweeping the region, they would thereafter produce a play, for all time, depicting the life and death of Jesus. It was first performed in 1634 and word spread throughout the region about the play. It became too expensive to perform every year, so the town decided that every 10 years would be sufficient.

The play is now performed repeatedly over the course of five months during every year ending in zero (next in 2020). It involves over 2,000 performers, musicians, and stage technicians, all residents of the village and many families have been involved in the play for generations. The play comprises spoken dramatic text, musical and choral accom- paniment and tableaux vivants, It has a running time of approximately seven hours, with a meal break provided. Au- diences come from all over the world, often on package tours, the first instituted in 1870. Admission fees were first charged in 1790. Since 1930, the number of visitors has ranged from 420,000 to 530,000, 50% from overseas.

Anji had taken advantage of a package tour which included, transport, a meal voucher, the text of the play in German and English and two nights accommodation. She said the whole production, performed in the open air, was most im- pressive and especially the performance of the choir and orchestra. She ended her talk by playing a CD of some of the choral pieces, which enabled us to appreciate the moving atmosphere created. Anji's enthusiasm was so infectious that a number of members expressed the wish that they could see such a perfor- mance...... There is no Branch Meeting in December. The report of the November meeting will be in the January Newsletter. A Happy and Peaceful Christmas to you all.

Good Neighbour News – Stroke Support

This month my article is about services for stroke survivors and carers and also Christmas lunches for those who find themselves alone at Christmas.

The Stroke Association can provide a wide variety of support, including local clubs, telephone helplines and support and information booklets for stroke survivors and carers. In Deviz- es, the Stroke Association runs a Communication Support Group for Stroke Survivors with communica- tion needs, especially those with aphasia.

Caring for someone who has had a stroke can be exhausting and lonely. Help is available for you – talk to your GP, the Stroke Association or Carer Support .

If you, or any friends or neighbours, are going to be alone on Christmas Day and would like to join others for Christmas Lunch, do ring and talk to me. There are a number of local organisations providing lunch on Christmas Day who would be pleased to see you.

He focused on local residents who had served in the Second World War and gave an account of Alannah Risely-Prichard's war time experiences. (Alannah had been hoping to participate but was unable to do so due to re- covering in hospital from an operation. We wish her a speedy recovery).

We played a quiz looking at photographs of local residents and trying to identify them. We learned about the sacrifice and commitment made by so many people in helping to protect this country from invasion and the fight against the tyranny of Nazism.

COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS FAYRE BISHOPS CANNINGS Only days to go before our Community Christmas Fayre and our team of vol- unteers from around the parish are hard at work put- ting the finishing touches in place. Over the past few weeks and months it has been such a marvellous ex- perience to be part of such a diverse and enthusiastic group of people. Planning resources, sourcing materi- als, discussing ideas and sharing experience – all with great humour, tireless energy and such positivity! Last year’s Community Fayre was supported mag- nificently by the parish – can we do it again? Well we really hope so – and this time with even more gusto! On Saturday, 7th Decem- ber in the Crown Inn car park we will be selling Nordman Fir “non drop” Christmas Trees at very competitive prices and with free local delivery within the parish! But this year we will have a wider range of sizes as our trees are com- ing from a new source rec- ognised for its quality trees by The Dorchester Hotel and Harrods no less! Inside St Mary’s church our Christmas Market will be packed with even more festive stalls including many new local artists and craftspeople. Christmas craft activities will be available and beautiful hand- made Christmas Trees designed by pupils, Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and youngsters from through- out the parish will decorate the church. Our very own church choir will be singing carols while you browse the stalls and Santa himself will be visiting our Grotto to read a Christmas story or two. There will be a chance to visit the Bell Tower and for those who would like to try their hand – why not have a go on our “Practice Bell”? Thanks to the Youth Action Group you won’t be far from a delicious bacon roll when you buy your Christmas Tree and inside the church the Friends of St Mary’s will be serving tea, coffee and delicious mince pies and cakes. New to this year’s Fayre will be the Bishops Cannings Christmas Bear Zip Wire Challenge – how long will our dare devil teddy take to zip wire down from the Tower to the churchyard? Make a guess then help count him down and the nearest time will win a prize! We do hope you will join us for another truly festive, family and friendly event. All proceeds go to- wards our Youth Action Group, St Mary’s church, the primary and pre-school. We look forward to see- ing you on Saturday, 7th December between 9 am – 1 pm and wish you all a very Merry Christmas indeed! FROM URCHFONT RECTORY

Dear Friends,

How do you prepare for Christmas ? There’s so much to think about: cards, presents, food, drink, parties, visiting relatives (that works both ways, of course!)… Or maybe you would just like to shut the door, draw the curtains and pretend it might all go away ?

Traditionally, Christians have had a sort of `warm-up act` for Christmas (and no, I don’t mean Carol Services, though we certainly have plenty of those, with seven between us – and then there are the villages that go carol singing around the streets – see `Opportunities for Worship` else- where in this Magazine). No, our traditional `warm-up act` is called `Advent`. It’s the three or four weeks immediately before Christmas when we try to look backwards and forwards at the same time !

I know that doesn’t sound too comfortable (and my neck clicks even without trying), but that is in fact what Advent tries to do: backwards to the birth of Jesus (Yes, backwards, because it hap- pened all those years ago, not forwards to Christmas) in order to see even further back, into the Old Testament, to discover what the birth of Jesus was all about – why God had to send a help- less baby into the world in order to bring us back to himself. Back, in order to realise that two thousand years ago God’s people the Jews (and not just the Jews, but others too – think of the wise men) were actively and longingly expecting this event. They just got the details wrong !

And forwards, not to Christmas but to what it is ultimately all about: the End ! Now there’s something that you might want to shut the door and draw the curtains against… Again, tradi- tionally the Church talked about `death`, `judgement`, `heaven` and `hell`, and I bet none of them are on your Christmas card list (let alone your present list) ! But it may be no bad thing to sober up before Christmas comes, because it is simply another way of saying `look to the future, and don’t let it catch you unawares`. There will be an `end` for all of us – we just don’t know when that might be, and it might be sooner than you think…

If we allow ourselves to think about this, then it should have an effect upon the way in which we live our lives. To be so focussed on retirement (for example) that we miss out on things now could be a big mistake if we never actually live that long. To concentrate on work to the detri- ment of spending time with our children is big mistake, because we can never make that time up later (however long we live) – that time has gone. The list, of course, is endless – but how often do you and I actually stop and consider whether we are making the best use of now ?

So perhaps I was wrong, in a way – Advent is not so much an invitation to look backwards and forwards, as to stop and look at now. And that doesn’t have to be `churchy` or `religious`, be- cause it should actually be intensely real and practical. Our son and daughter in law (neither. The diagnosis required an immediate four months plus of treatment, but with the hope that it would be a cure. They sat down to ponder what was really important in their lives, and it wasn’t work ! That doesn’t mean that work goes out of the window, of course, it just means that it doesn’t block the view either… the view that includes more significantly each other and their (nearly three year old) daughter.

Christmas will be very special for them this year. It could be for you too, if you make it so. And please spare more than a thought for the people of the Philippines after their devastating ty- phoon. They have the longest `Christmas season` in the world, I’m told by friends who live there, as it starts in September – but this year they will be contemplating the future in a different way. Maybe we should too ?

Happy Christmas ! William Lang.
