Mike Phoenix : Comics' Second City: The Gateway History of the American Comic Book before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised Comics' Second City: The Gateway History of the American Comic Book:

1 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Quirky but interesting readBy Maybe Its Just MeComics Second City is a pretty interesting read, although it loses focus quite a bit and doesn't tell it's story in a quite linear fashion. St. Louis should be the main focus, but most of the early story takes place in rural and not St. Louis. Not enough credit goes to the early Comics Buyers Guide is a linking force that joined fans in a particular area. When it came out in 1971 from East Moline Illinois, it was a real galvanizing force as fans saw ads from others in their respective towns and made contact. It certainly happened with me. I had small ads in earlier issues of CBG and a number of people in St. Louis, including people mentioned in the book contacted me and I made new friends and was myself exposed to comics groups and enjoyed a better grasp of the magic that was comics fandom in those earlier days. I have some minor quibbles, having been there in the seventies and eighties with many of the fans mentioned. The late Terry Klasek (spelled as Klassik here) was eccentric, as the book says. But he did connect a number of people together and was actually the first fan to approach Norma Dent (wife of Lester Dent, Doc Savage creator) and recieved memorabilia and wrote about his trips in several small publications. I was involved in Random Fandom in the 70's and was one of the contact people for the club. My father's house still got calls into the 90s on the club, as the Post-Dispatch erroneously put out the information years later on the defunct group, or else people found old phone numbers that they were hoping were still good. Alas, Random Fandom, with a great group of guys, died an early death. There is two much focus on the group SAGA. Time could have been better spent on research on other items that are barely touched upon in the book. There was number of other comics "stores" in the 60's and 70's that were not really quite comics stores, but great sources. Two of these were places run by a man named Tom Kelly downtown, one on Washington and one near the old Famous Barr. I found many older and newer comics at these places, including a chance find of #1 and 2 in the early 70s in poor-fair condition at a dime apiece. I remember seeing stacks of Silver Surfer #1 at 2 for 25 cents. I think I bought one of the time. Sigh... More mention and research should have been done on Amitin's bookstore on Washington in downtown St. Louis as well. He always came up with some good stuff, but.... always overpriced. Still, I wish I could go back! I did enjoy the book and pictures and stories. But there is so much more to tell. St. Louis is indeed rich in comic book history. I know that the author Michael Phoenix was a late comer to the city, but having grown up in the area in the 60s without the guidance of a group or club, I managed to find the places to go for comics. We did have it all at one time!

The history of the American comic book as seen from the vantage point of St. Louis, Missouri, second only to New York as the most influential city in the early story of the comics. This profusely illustrated book reflects a decade of research and the author's interviews with Jerry Bails, , Dennis O'Neil, Gary Friedrich, Bob Schoenfeld, Jim Steranko and dozens of local comic book fans and professionals.
