‘Gouache Painting’ Materials List With Jim Minet Here is my recommended list of the essential items you need for the very best watercolor experience. Brushes: Because gouache needs a slightly stiffer brush than regular watercolor, I recommend synthetic brushes. I do recommend Silver Brush short handle ‘Silver Silk 88’ brushes for gouache available at www.jerrysartarama.com and my second choice for gouache would be the short handle Silver White (by Silver Brush co) at Jerry’s or at www.dickblick.com Brush Type: A minimum of four watercolor brushes. 1. A large 1-inch flat wash brush (recommend – Silver White) 2. A medium-large ‘flat’ or ‘bright’ brush size 8 or 10 (recommend – Silver Silk 88) 3. A medium -small ‘flat’ or ‘bright’ brush size 4 or 6 (recommend- Silver Silk 88) 4. A round- brush size 4 (recommend Silver White) Paper – you can use either: • a glued block of 100 % Cotton 140 lb. cold or rough press watercolor paper, approximately 10x14 inch or larger. If it does not say ‘cotton’ then it is not. Or: • a couple large sheets of the same grade paper (this is a less expensive option that I recommend--sheets come in 22x30 inches. Cut it into 4 or 8 pieces) If you are not using a glued block, make sure to bring a drawing board to place your paper on. Any hard board, or inexpensive plastic or wood drawing board, not too large, will do, even a very firm piece of corrugated will do. Should not be too much bigger than the paper you will work on.

OTHER GREASE PENCILS AND MARKERS After writing an online essay about Listo mechanical grease pencils (aka china markers, crayon pencils, etc.), I took an inventory of all the other brands of “markers” that had stuck to my hands over the years. I found two dozen! When I stroll the outdoor and indoor antiques and collectibles markets in this area, I pick up anything that looks like fun and is in my price range, i.e. cheap - - Frank Dubiel (RIP) and I had a lot in common. (Also, if you’ve read my other essays, you know I am first and foremost an Autopoint, Realite and Realpoint collector.) So I’m going to show you a sort of “parade” of markers which 1)vary between mechanical instruments and simple “clamp the lead” devices, 2)use a wide variety of diameters of grease or crayon type leads, and 3)are made from various materials like wood, plastic, and metal. I’ll lead off with Autopoint’s sole offering first, then retreat to what I suspect is the oldest marker in my collection, and work toward the most modern of the markers that I found. A WORD ABOUT MARKERS AND LEAD REFILLS SIZES: Autopoint, Listo and many other manufacturers made “checking pencils” along with their production of “normal” mechanical pencils, especially in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. Autopoint probably made a hundred different styles of “regular” mechanical pencils, but it also made a wide variety of “checking” pencils over those years. Most of Autopoint’s early mechanical pencils either used .046” diameter (“standard”) or .036” diameter (“real thin”) leads, but its “checking” leads were .076” in diameter (or ~1.93mm).

COURSE DESCRIPTION AKA: What to Expect In this course we will examine the fundamental understandings and principles of the professional field of cartooning from a formal analysis of how the aesthetics of a comic’s construction can help to promote its content. We will become familiar with and experience the basics of cartooning as well as allow exploration towards the wealth of options available to you as you pursue this field. There are several things that the student is expected to understand by the end of this course: What methods and media can I employ towards creating? Evan Kitson Chromatic Drawing Materials List MATERIALS
Evan Kitson Chromatic Drawing Materials List MATERIALS These are the materials that I’ll be using during the lecture/demo during the course. I use these all the time when I’m drawing/sketching, and highly recommend them: Pentel Hi-Polymer Colored Pencil Leads: Red and Blue These are mechanical pencil leads. I use the .5mm size, and even though they often break, the color is so wonderful that it makes them highly worthwhile. You can also get them in other sizes, such as .9mm, which breaks less- but I prefer the .5mm size for the marks that it leaves. Rotring 600 Series Mechanical Pencil This has quickly become my favorite mechanical pencil. It’s made entirely of metal, and has some weight to it, which I personally like. I use the .5mm size. Prismacolor Verithin Colored Pencils These are my favorite colored pencils. They’re vibrant, and compared to their “Premier” counterparts, they’re firmer and are easier to sharpen. I use the Terra Cotta, Black, Crimson Red, and Peacock Blue pencils. General’s Factis BM2 Mechanical Eraser It’s a white vinyl eraser that’s sized like a pencil. It’s one of my favorite universal drawing tools. Arches Hotpress 140lb Watercolor Paper My favorite drawing paper. It’s weight and sizing are perfect for working up a drawing and really diving in there without worrying about destroying your paper. I also really like the tooth. I use the “blocks”, personally, but you can purchase single sheets as well.
