7 UPDATE MAGAZINE SPRING 2016 Rebels Attend Lugar Leadership Conference Juniors Katie Goebel, Claire Whalen and Kelly Zhang attended the 2015 Richard G. Lugar Symposium for Tomorrow’s Leaders on December 5, 2015 at the University of Indianapolis. These three juniors, who attended the symposium along with nearly 500 other students from around the state, were selected based on their outstanding leadership and service.

Each year the Lugar Symposium is held to bring together leaders from high schools across Indiana. At the symposium, the students attended two mini sessions on the following topics: 2016 Presidential Election, Terrorism, Law & Society, U.S. Leadership in the World and Refugees. In addition to attending the sessions, these students heard from Senator Richard Lugar and other leaders from around the state.

John McCaslin, current pastor of St. Anthony Catholic Church, is one of this year’s National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) honorees for his commitment to Catholic schools and his efforts that resulted in the reopening of St. Anthony Catholic School as a Mother Theodore Catholic Academy. They competed in a number of categories including: art, music, vocals, current events, religion, physical fitness, geography, drama, essay writing and the super quiz team competition. St. Roch was the winner of this year’s super quiz. As has been the case in the previous 30 years there was a near capacity crowd in the gym during the awards ceremony to recognize these middle school students for their talents.

GRAND CHAMPIONS Rebel Rhapsody Show Choir, under the direction of Mr. Joey Newton, brought home the Grand Champions Award as the best Show Choir in their division at the Mooresville Invitational. Their show stopping performance was a great way to end the competition season.

Four student and three staff teams competed in the newest tradition during THESPIAN REGIONAL Catholic Schools Week. The senior team of Kara Cougill, Molly Crosley, Jake Franklin, Sydney Henn, CHAMPIONSHIP Amy Jennings, Nathan Kern, Alexander Pollard and Max van Dongen won the student bracket, but was “Mere Mortals,” one of the Roncalli High School defeated in the finals by last year's champions, the Globo Theater Department’s productions in last spring’s Gym Purple Cobras. Faculty members of the winning “The Night of One Acts,” won first place in the 2015 team were: Ben North, Kevin Banich R'09, John Hasty Indiana Thespian Regional championship. 15 UPDATE MAGAZINE SPRING 2016 RONCALLI ENTERTAINS WITH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS CONCERTS The Performing Arts Department ushered in the Advent and Christmas seasons with their annual Christmas Concerts. Ensembles from the Roncalli Band and Choral Programs performed two separate shows on Sunday, December 6. The Advanced Women’s chorus, Beginning Women’s chorus and Show Choir delighted the crowd with a mix of traditional and contemporary Christmas songs. Winter Sports In Review BOYS’ BASKETBALL The boys’ basketball team completed its season with a 14-8 record, extending the program’s streak of seasons with 10 wins or more to 14 seasons. Only 20 boys’ basketball programs in Indiana have an active streak of at least 14 seasons of 10 wins or more. Despite opening the season with only three players who had appeared in more than five varsity games and no players who had ever started a varsity game, the team won a school single-season record nine home games and was one of just nine teams in 47 seasons of Roncalli basketball to win at least Junior guard Christian Stewart program’s lone senior, set a record 14 regular season games. WRESTLING A young Rebel wrestling team finished with a 10-11 record and registered a sixth-place finish in the Marion County Championship. In the postseason, the Rebels finished fourth in the sectional and advanced seven wrestlers to the regional round. Three of those wrestlers – seniors Nick Ellis, Quinn Cecil and Tyler Smith – advanced to the semi-state. Cecil, a three-year JV wrestler, ended his senior season one match shy of the state finals.

Ellis won the individual title at the Spartan Classic (Connersville) at 138 pounds and went 5-0 at the New Castle Duals. He finished as the runner-up in the county, the sectional and the regional. Cecil was the sectional and regional runner-up at 182 pounds. Sophomore Sam Hansen went 5-0 at 145 pounds at the Shamrock Duals at Westfield High School. Freshmen Brian Keeney and Jarrod Shanley won individual titles at Marion County Freshman Meet.

CLARKE AT STATE GYMNASTICS WANTZ WINS Freshman Makenna Clarke’s three-week run through the state tournament ended with a 15th place in the all-around at the state finals and two top-10 200th GAME finishes in individual events – seventh place in the beam and ninth place in the floor exercise. She was the only freshman in the state to advance to Roncalli boys’ basketball coach the state finals in the all-around competition as an individual. In the earlier Michael Wantz earned his rounds of the state tournament, Clarke finished fourth in the all-around 200th career victory in a 73- competition at sectional and was a top-10 finisher in all four events. BOYS' SWIMMING & DIVING The boys’ swimming and diving team posted an 11-1 regular season record, finished third in the Marion County meet, finished fifth in the sectional and sent a relay team to the state finals – all with only 10 swimmers on the roster.

The third-place finish at the Marion County meet was highlighted by senior Adam Pongracz capturing the county title in the 100 butterfly. Pongracz teamed with senior Eddie Huck, junior Nick Carpenter and sophomore Jack Bauer to win the county 200 medley relay title. The quartet set a new school record in the event (1:38.36) and advanced all the way to the state finals, where they finished 25th. Additionally, coach Ed Merkling was named Marion County Coach of the Year.

Pongracz and Huck were named team co-MVPs. Freshman Blake Ludge earned the team’s most improved award. Pongracz broke the program record for average points scored per meet with 28.15. Both Huck (27.65) and Bauer (26.65) also topped the previous mark of 25.93.
