It is strongly recommended that this document is read alongside the full proposals available at www.englandhockey.co.uk/astructurefitforthefuture If you are looking for your club the quickest way is to search this document using the find function and add your club name (press Ctrl f). Introduction and Context The proposals set out in A Structure Fit for the Future provide the background to these league structures (www.englandhockey.co.uk/astructurefitforthefuture). They are only indicative at this stage and are provided in response to requests from clubs for more detail so clubs can vote at the 2020 England Hockey AGM with sufficient insight. The proposed structure aims to create a fairer approach with more equal opportunities to progress. In light of the feedback received from clubs the aim in the proposals has been to reduce travelling time wherever reasonably possible. Alongside the new structure league rules will be aligned across the country supporting more effective approaches to technology bringing more efficiency for clubs and players. After the initial intelligent mapping exercise, supported by Llamasoft for England Hockey on a pro-bono basis, eight new Areas are proposed. These were developed using Google maps traffic data and have since been consulted on with clubs and associations through a range of workshops and an online survey. The eight Areas will sub-divide locally into smaller geographical areas at lower levels with the number of local divisions based on the density of hockey in that area. The Areas will be responsible for all adult league provision outside of the England Hockey Leagues and will have the power to refine the structures locally in line with the national principles. Clubs will be able to influence their local provision by being affiliated members of the Area bodies. There are two interactive maps available that can be used to see the proposed approach that are available here: www.englandhockey.co.uk/astructurefitforthefuture. Details on the approach for clubs on boundaries are available in the full proposal. The proposed adult league competition pyramid works alongside a traditional competition model by splitting 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 etc. The model worked up in the following pages follows the structure in the table beneath. At this stage the structure is developed based on league positions of teams at December 2019. Individual divisions have not been created below the Pyramid Level 16 as there are two promotions and relegations in the intervening period. Also with clubs selecting Areas to play in there are still too many variables to provide exact divisions. Pyramid League % Pyramid Structure Organiser Level Tier Teams 1 1 0.005% England 2 2 0.1% Hockey 4 3 0.2% 8 4 5% 16 5 11% Area 32 6 – 16+ 83% 64 If the proposals are accepted by the membership at the 2020 England Hockey AGM clubs will then be invited to select their playing Area(s) in April 2020. By September 2020 more detailed league structures would be shared for the final season played in existing structures. The new adult league structure would be in place from September 2021. • The Marketing of Corn in the First Half of the Eighteenth Century: North,East Ken(
...................... - ..................................... = .................................................................... The Marketing of Corn in the First Half of the Eighteenth Century: North,East Ken( By DENNIS BAKER I HE home market was at least six times as valuable as the overseas market during the first half of the eighteenth century. The ratio could have been T much higher and one contemporary estimate even puts it at 32 to ~. Throughout the early modern period the vast bulk of this traffic concerned agri- cultural produce, for in I75o England was still a predominantly agricultural economy. 2 Marketing, nevertheless, remains one of the most neglected aspects of agri- cultural history? There is a dearth of suitable source material. We know much about the management of crops and livestock in the field, little about their journey beyond the farm gate. A thorough exploration of the various outlets leading from farm to consumer is a rare venture. More frequently we seek shelter in some terminological cul-de-sac like 'commercialized agriculture' or 'farming for the market'. Admittedly, in some regions the market outlets were few or fraught with hazards; such, for instance, was the difficult position of those who farmed the Midland clays, ill-drained and intractable. But others, more fortunately placed, could choose from a wide range of marketing possi- bilities; this held true, for example, over much of the eastern and home counties. The farmers of north-east Kent possessed a number of competitive advan- tages, but none more valuable than proximity to the markets both local and in London. This fertile belt of Kent stretches from Rainham in the west to the eastern extremities of Thanet, a distance of about 35 miles; it averages 8 miles or more in width.

CLIFFE 1VIARsllEs.—During excavations for mud for cement- making purposes, in the marsh adjacent to the Nine Elms Cement Works, which are situate on the banks of the Thames about three miles from Cliffe-at-Hoo, and nearly opposite East Tilbury Church on the other side of the river, the workmen cut into several Roman graves, which yielded many interesting objects, all of which came into the hands of the writer, who handed them over to the Roches- ter Museum. The various articles were put aside when found, but unfortunately few details were to be obtained of the number of the graves, or the disposition of the remains discovered in each grave. My first year as president has certainly had many peaks and troughs. From a very sad personal beginning to a mid-table finish and then to be relegated and so on. Following the club’s final meeting with the RFU, we both agreed that it is in all our interests to move on from the eye incident. We are now putting a firm line in the sand. Looking positively forward I have some very good things to report. On the playing front we had a very commendable season. This is down to the efforts of new Director of Rugby, Andy Foley and his team. Everyone just wanted to play rugby, after all this is what we are, a rugby club. Andy has exciting plans for next season. The new flood lights have been to the benefit of all those that have been training and we have increased the playing area at the back of the first team pitch for the junior tag-rugby section.

  • THE ROMANO-BRITISH SETTLEMENT at SPRINGHEAD by W
Archaeologia Cantiana Vol. 65 1952 THE ROMANO-BRITISH SETTLEMENT AT SPRINGHEAD By W. S. PENN, B.Sc. THE existence of a Romano-British, settlement at Springhead, South- fleet, near Gravesend, has been known for many years, and One Tree Field at Springhead is marked on the Ordnance Survey Map as the site of Vagniacse,1 mentioned in the Itinerary of Antonine, Iter II. In spite of this, no systematic investigation of the site seems to have been conducted, although there must have been sporadic excavations (mainly unrecorded) at intervals over the past fifty years.2 A full discussion of the contention that the site is Vagniacse (and the evidence is not conclusive3) and of other finds in the district does not belong to this summarizing report, but will be considered in the detailed report of the recent excavations to be published later. The Excavations Committee of the Gravesend Historical Society decided to conduct a series of investigations on the site and several trial pits were dug in One Tree Field during the autumn of 1950. Coins, pottery and other finds, including flint footings, indicated a fairly inten- sive fourth-century occupation so that it was decided to carry out as systematic an investigation as possible, considering the limited time available on agricultural land. After much work of this nature it became possible to excavate fully during the 1952 season, through the courtesy of the Tenant, Mr. Bartholomew. The relatively limited amount of Avork so far completed has indicated several well-defined features of the occupation, but it should be stressed that any conclusions are only tentative since a vast area requires to be excavated.
