The beginning of the fountain dates back before the 14th century in Europe. The fountains were originally used to provide drinking water and also water for bathing. The art of fountains became well known around the 14th century when they were being placed in palaces and gardens. These fountains became more of a decorative art form than for personal usage over the centuries. TABLE OF CONTENTS

The Buckingham Fountain is in the great honor of Miss Kate Buckingham’s late brother Clarence in EAST JACKSON DRIVE

1927. Kate became fascinated with public fountains DRIVE COLUMBUS SOUTH and wanted to bring some of Europe’s structure to DRIVE LAKESHORE Chicago. The design of the fountain is based on the Versailles Palace near Paris. The seahorses symbolize the four states that surround Lake , Illinois, , Michigan and , while the fountain

represents the lake. This fountain is one of the EAST BALBO DRIVE largest in the world.

The Crown Fountain was inspired by the greater people of Chicago. There are two 50 foot glass block EAST MADISON STREET SOUTH DRIVE COLUMBUS SOUTH towers at each end of a small shallow reflecting AVENUE MICHIGAN SOUTH pool. Both of the towers project video images of many different people from Chicago, when their mouths are open project water through outlets. More than 1,000 Chicagoan residents were filmed for this fountain. The fountain is a favorite to both children and their families. EAST MONROE STREET

the 100th anniversary of the Metropolitan Water EAST ILLINOIS STREET COURT MCCLURG NORTH NORTH NEW STREET NEW NORTH Reclamation District of Chicago. It has two major parts to it, a semicircular waterfall and a huge water cannon that shoots out into the Chicago River every hour for ten minutes. River boats will either pause and wait for the water to then shoot out or the boats will go straight through the water and get soaked by EAST NORTH WATER STREET

THE CENTENNIAL FOUNTAIN 399 NORTH MCCLURG COURT LOHAN ASSOCIATES, 1989 ALONG THE RIVERWALK 6 NORTH WABASH AVENUE WABASH NORTH The Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Fountain is known as one of the largest memorials in the nation, outside of Washington D.C. There are many high end elements as well as many features of the fountain WEST WACKER DRIVE

that also highlight the historical significance of this STATE STREET NORTH landmark. It includes granite stone engraved with more than 2,900 servicemen, plus a waterfall with

a service medal given to all of the Vietnam War EAST HADDOCK PLACE Veterans, 14 water jets and a plaque wall.

THE VIETNAM VETERANS’ MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN 35 EAST WACKER DRIVE COLLINS ENGINEERS, ROSS BARNEY; JANKOWSKI ARCHITECTS, 2005 ALONG THE RIVERWALK 8 This fountain is also known as the “Spirit of the Great Lakes Fountain.” The Fountain of The Great Lakes is EAST MONROE STREET SOUTH MICHIGAN AVENUE MICHIGAN SOUTH an allegorical and is made up of bronze DRIVE COLUMBUS SOUTH artwork. The fountain depicts these five women arranged so that the water flows through them, the same way as the Great Lakes. The fountain originally faced south until 1963 when it was moved next to the Morton Wing addition facing west, where it stands today. FOUNTAIN OF THE GREAT LAKES EAST ADAMS STREET , 1907-1913 111 SOUTH MICHIGAN AVENUE THE ART INSTITUTE 10 The Fountain of Time is inspired by a poem, called DRIVE the “Paradox of Time”, by Henry Austin Dobson. COTTAGE GROVE AVENUE GROVE COTTAGE The work was created as a monument to the first 100 years of peace between the United States and Great Britian, which resulted from the 1814 Treaty of Ghent. The fountain first began running water in 1920, but was not dedicated until 1922. The fountain was created from a new type of molded,

steel reinforced that was claimed to be MIDWAY PLAISANCE DRIVE FOUNTAIN OF TIME more durable and cheaper, and it also takes up the LORADO TAFT, 1920 length of a city block. WASHINGTON PARK

12 This fountain stands about 30 feet high with a diameter of 30 feet. It was a project of the former WEST NORTH AVENUE Chicago Mayor Jane Byrne. It is dedicated to all the NORTH CLARK STREET CLARK NORTH children in Chicago who will take from our past to better our future. The fountain was previously located on Wacker Drive and it now stands in the northeast corner of North Avenue and Clark Street near the .

These are the four smaller fountains in Grant Park that surround the north and south sides of the EAST JACKSON DRIVE SOUTH LAKESHORE DRIVE LAKESHORE SOUTH Buckingham Fountain. Crane Girl and Turtle Boy are DRIVE COLUMBUS SOUTH on the north side of the fountain while the Dove Girl and Fisher Boy are located on the south side of the fountain. Each fountain is located in its own separate small circular garden in the beautiful Grant Park Rose Gardens.

by other larger than life public art . The DRIVE STREETER NORTH Gateway Park Fountain is known to be an interactive fountain that many children experience playing in the water everyday. At night the fountain lights up and continues to shoot water in the air.

GATEWAY PARK FOUNTAIN 515 NORTH STREETER DRIVE WET (WATER ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGIES) NAVY PIER 22 The Chicago Board of Trade building in located in the center downtown loop area. The fountain is in the WEST VAN BUREN STREET SOUTH FINANCIAL PLACE FINANCIAL SOUTH middle of the entrance, with two statues on either STREET LASALLE SOUTH of its sides. The fountain is created in an Art Deco style structure. During the holidays the fountain is covered in Christmas lights which can be seen from blocks away.

There are a few similiar styles of fountains in the EAST WACKER DRIVE East Park Northwest area. These fountains are said

to be a story line from the beginning of life to the EAST SOUTH WATER STREET end of the stages of life. They are made from stones and different types of metals. During the spring and summer seasons many people come down to sit and EAST BENTON PLACE NORTH FIELD DRIVE FIELD NORTH relax next to the peaceful and calm fountains.

351 EAST SOUTH WATER STREET CHICAGO BOARD OF TRADE 26 This Daley Center Plaza Fountain is located in the center of the plaza in downtown, which is surrounded WEST WASHINGTON STREET

by a large Picasso sculpture and an eternal flame. STREET DEARBORN NORTH The fountain is built in-ground with many water jets STREET CLARK NORTH that shoot a few feet in the air. During holidays or special events the fountain is dyed different colors corresponding to the holiday.
