31 32 A HISTORY OF CRAFT BEER IN AUSTIN Believe it or not, brewing in Austin isn’t a new phenomenon. It’s something that’s been going on since before prohibition. One of the first breweries in town opened in 1860 and was located at Kirchberg’s Saloon. The head brewer was Johann Schneider, a businessman who had worked in some of Europe’s most prestigious breweries. Unfortunately, he suffered an untimely death, but you can still see his original limestone beer vaults in the underground dining room of La Condesa (400 W. 2nd Street).
It was only in the 1990s that the craft beer scene really began taking off again. The first of the breweries to open was Celis Brewery (10001 Metric Blvd.) on March 19, 1992. By 1995, they had become the fastest-growing microbrewery in the entire country. What made it so popular? It was Austin’s first brewery in almost a decade!
The beer scene just continued to grow once Austin passed HB 1425, a bill that allowed restaurants and bars to brew their own beer on site.
