AP Studio Art 2-D Design Mrs. Sellers [email protected] Getting Started Summer 2021

Course Description This course is meant for those students that have completed both Basic and Advanced courses. It is recommended that you also complete a course to help expand your understanding of design. AP is treated as a college level course and the workload and expectations will reflect that. The class IS a weighted grade, which also increases the level of expectation for work being submitted or grading. Student will be working on similar assignment, but are expected to use their own developed personal voice in the expression of their work. This means not all assignments submitted will always be in the same format or context. Students enrolled in this class are expected to participate for the entire year. Students are also expected to submit a portfolio at the conclusion of the class for AP Scoring. All students are also expected to have some type of digital camera to complete assignments outside of class time.

What is this class all about anyway? In the AP Studio Art Portfolio, the ‘exam’ is a body of the student’s artwork that is submitted to the both as digital images and actual work. All portfolios consist of two areas of study: Quality and Area of Sustained Investigation.

It’s about… 1. Motivation, NOT talent 2. Decision making and process, NOT mediums and materials 3. Composition is key! If you haven’t invited the viewer into your art it doesn’t matter how well the pieces is rendered. 4. Developing yourself as an artist. (the class and college credit is just the icing on the cake) 5. It’s not always going to be easy, but you will grow and learning is hard work

Course Outline and Schedule

Students will primarily be experimenting with process in design for the first quarter of the school year. A variety of concepts and approaches will be used to demonstrate abilities and versatility with the techniques, problem solving and ideation.

Students will transition into more open-ended and exploratory work for the Sustained Investigation section of the portfolio during the 2nd-4th quarter. They will then use the knowledge learned in processes to explore “Big Ideas” to create their Sustained investigations. Students will be expected to brainstorm, sketch, document, critique and rework pieces to complete the 15 needed for the sustained investigation. Students will develop a body of work for the Sustained Investigation that is planned around an idea of interest to them.

2 AP 2-D Design Summer Assignment Museum and Gallery Visits

You need to spend some time (at least an hour) at three Museums or galleries looking at the artwork. You will also need to photograph 5 artworks that you find interesting or inspiring to you. Your visit can be in person or virtual! Most museum websites have links to their permanent collection galleries!

RULES • Typically, you can only photograph artworks in the museums "permanent" collection. This is usually artworks that do not cost extra to enter to see, but some traveling exhibits do not cost extra. You will usually see signage for things that should not be photographed. You can always ask the receptionist at the front desk what areas of the museum you can take photos of.

• NEVER USE FLASH IN A MUSEUM or GALLERY

• Be sure as you photograph your images you are also taking a photo of the artist’s name and title of the piece! You will need this information for your project.

After you have made your museum visits:

UPLOAD your images to a folder called MUSEUM ARTWORK

RENAME your images for the title of the artwork

Make a PowerPoint presentation with your 15 images, artist names, and titles of the pieces as well as the gallery or museum it is from.

SAVE your PowerPoint as a MOVIE file and COMPRESS

UPLOAD your compressed PowerPoint to STUDENTVUE upon returning to school

** The museum visit needs to be completed on YOUR OWN TIME! Plan ahead, get some friends to go with you and enjoy the wonderful collection of art that we have just down the street from us!**
