Dear Parishioners of St. Peter and Families of St. Mary Catholic School, It is with heavy hearts that we write today following the death of your beloved and longtime pastor, Father Michael Cooney. In his 30 years as pastor at St. Peter Parish, he has become like cherished family to many of you, just as you were family to him. We offer our condolences to the community and all those who loved and will miss Father Mike. Father Mike was known around Mt. Clemens and beyond as a “downtoearth” pastor who was proud of his Irish heritage. Among his brother priests, he encouraged a great love for the priesthood as a brother- hood in service of Christ. He went out of his way to recognize the value of the archdiocese’s senior priests, welcoming them into your parish family and inviting them to his annual summer gathering for many years. This dedicated pastor recently began looking forward to retirement, but only because of concerns about his health declining in recent years. Had his body allowed, he would have happily served for and with you for many years to come. So today, we turn to our merciful Savior in prayer for Father Mike and all those who mourn him, with great confidence in Christ’s promise to bring us to his Kingdom. "Eternal rest grant unto Father Mike, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him." Bishop Robert Fisher Archbishop of , of Detroit, friend and former seminary classmate of Father Mike’s Northeast Regional Moderator Page 2 St. Peter Parish, Mount Clemens

Having attended public school all my life, the only time I experienced Catholic school was my Catechism class at St. Louis School, pursuant to my First Holy Communion when I was 8 years old. The only thing I remember was the Nuns who didn’t tolerate my nonsense. I couldn’t wait to go back to my public school where I could get away with my ‘class clown’ antics (some of them). Recently I have had the opportunity to volunteer helping St. Mary School Maintenance Director, Lou Legghio. I was amazed at the demeanor of the students I saw. It was obvious that the students love their teachers and the teachers love their students. When Lou was called for maintenance in Mrs. Sulek’s 4th Grade class, the students were standing next to their desks. Mrs. Sulek told the students, “We are going to have lunch, but first we will say Grace”. Lou and I joined the students in sharing the sign of the cross and saying Grace with them. This was an aweinspiring experience for me. In a video on the St. Mary Catholic School Facebook page, the students in Mrs. Kern’s Kindergarten class were playing “Time for a brain break”; the teacher played music to which the students danced M Mrs. Kern stopped the music and said, “freeze”. The students ‘froze’ in place. The students were having a ball. This process repeated a few times. I thought, ‘what a great way to let the kids burn off some energy’. In public school, besides recess, the only exercise I had was marching myself down to the Principal’s office for due punishment for my latest mischief. I also viewed a Facebook video of Mrs. Suleks’ 4th grade class’s ‘directed drawing project’ where students’ drawings of American Servicemen and women were shown in a power point presentation to the song “Proud to Be an American” by Lee Greenwood. This was an inspiring salute for Veterans’ Day. I congratulate St. Mary School Principal Maureen Miscavish, the teachers, students and the St. Mary family on a wonderful education experience. ***************** I once asked Father Mike if he closed every funeral with An Irish Blessing; he said “Yes”. So, to Father Cooney, May the road rise to meet you May the wind be always at your back May the sun shine warm upon your face, The rain fall soft upon your fields And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand. We will miss you, Father Cooney.

He dearly loved his parish family and having been able to serve us in so many kind and caring ways. Please be sure your children know they had a special place in his heart; he always called them “my kids”. Fr. Mike loved giving highfives to his kids. They became his trademark greeting. Hopefully, all children will always remember this gesture of love. St. Nicholas day is celebrated on December 6th. St. Nicholas was a bishop and saint who showed the spirit of generous giving. Tradition tells us that he loved the poor and their children most of all. The boys and girls of Holland put their shoes or slippers out on St. Nicholas Eve and hope that St. Nicholas leaves them a small gift when he visits to pick up their Christmas wish lists. Maybe this could be a custom your family could start! St. Nicholas is the Patron Saint of children. Sincerely, Mrs. Coll & Mrs. Loyal Advent is the four weeks before Christmas which is spent in preparation for the Birthday of Jesus. It is a time to celebrate light in the midst of the darkest days of the year. Using an Advent wreath will help your family by lighting (or coloring) a candle each week and reciting the appropriate week’s prayer.

Second Sunday: color the candle of PEACE purple. Prayer for Week 2: God, help us to live the peace of Your Son in our hearts, our family and our world. Amen. St. Peter Parish, Mount Clemens Page 7 WOMEN’S BOOK CLUB

Harriet aka Hal receives a letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She quickly realizes that the letter was sent to the wrong person and also her skills as a tarot reader might help her claim the money. Soon Hal finds herself at the funeral of the deceased...where it dawns on her that something is very wrong about the situation and the inheritance is at the bottom of it. It was an intriguing mystery which was hard to put down. Over all we gave The Death of Mrs. Westaway by Ruth Ware a 4.

On December 10th we will get together to talk about Seven Days of Us by Francesca Hornak. A family can’t escape their secrets when they’re forced to spend a week in quarantine at Christmas in this “sharply funny” novel.

Join us on December 10th at 1 pm at the Pantry on Hall Rd. Bring a friend.
